As a smaller, simplified version of the extremely versatile VideoMic NTG, the Rode VideoMic GO II ultracompact shotgun microphone is a radical departure from the original VideoMic GO, with significant upgrades to the body, shockmount, cable, and more. It gives video content creators, run-and-gun filmmakers, voiceover artists, and podcasters the sound of the highly regarded NTG shotguns in a convenient camera-mount mic that works with cameras, portable recorders, iOS and Android mobile devices, and USB-equipped computers.

Use the VideoMic GO II as a traditional shotgun mic for your DSLR or turn it into a digital microphone by connecting it to your smartphone, tablet, or laptop with separately available cables; in both configurations it delivers focused directivity, low noise, and isolation from external vibrations. When used as a USB microphone, the 3.5mm jack functions as a headphone output for monitoring the live signal or playback from your host device. Since the mic runs on plug-in power or USB power and has no controls or switches, it is easy and fast to operate.

What's New in Version II

Compared to the original VideoMic GO, the VideoMic GO II was thoroughly overhauled and loaded with design elements in form and function from Rode's popular VideoMic NTG. With upgrades to the body, shockmount, and cable, plus the ability to operate as an analog or digital USB microphone, this version is a completely different mic from the original VideoMic GO.

Technology Ported from the VideoMic NTG

The VideoMic GO II's body features acoustic perforations rather than the linear slots traditionally used in shotgun microphones. This annular line tube technology was ported from Rode's VideoMic NTG to deliver transparency and a natural, uncolored sound.

Directional Sound Pickup

The VideoMic GO II utilizes a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on the sound in front of it while attenuating other sounds from the sides and rear. Its low-noise electronics and sensitive condenser element deliver more detailed audio than mics typically found in cameras and portable recorders.

TRS Camera Connection

A detachable 3.5mm TRS cable is supplied to quickly hook up your camera. The cable is wired in a dual-mono configuration, ensuring that the mic signal is sent identically to both input channels of your camera or portable recorder. Both short and flat, the cord is easy to keep tidy.

Full USB Microphone Functionality

Plug the VideoMic GO II into your computer, smartphone, or tablet via USB to use it as a digital USB microphone for direct recording to your favorite software. Its integrated analog-to-digital converter operates at 24-bit / 48 kHz to provide full-resolution, uncompressed audio quality.

MFi-Certified for Apple iOS Mobile Devices

The VideoMic GO II is officially MFi-certified, unlocking complete compatibility with Lightning-equipped iOS devices, including iPhone, iPad, and iPod. Plug your VideoMic GO II into your iPhone, iPad, or iPod via USB with the Rode SC15 USB Type-C to Lightning accessory cable (available separately).

Convenient Headphone Monitoring

When using the VideoMic GO II as a USB microphone, plug your headphones into its 3.5mm output for convenient headphone monitoring.

Uses Plug-In Power or USB Power

No batteries are needed for the VideoMic GO II. It runs on plug-in power through the TRS connection to your camera, or it can be bus powered via USB.

Shockmount with Sliding Rail and Cable Management

Understanding that the rubber bands used in many shockmounts can snap and stretch, Rode chose to opt for a rugged Rycote Lyre suspension-style shockmount designed for attachment to a camera or boom pole. This simplifies setup of the mic and inhibits the transfer of vibrations from the camera. The shockmount's sliding rail system lets you shift the position of the mic forward or backward for perfect placement. Forget about messy cabling; the built-in cable management keeps the cord run orderly.

Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise

The VideoMic GO II includes a foam windscreen to minimize unwanted wind noise from light breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in outdoor environments, consider a furry windshield such as the Rode WS12 (available separately).

Rode VideoMic GO II Reviews

Best shotgun mic

Affordable and no batteries needed. I love it.

Easy to use, high quality, low cost mic.

The VideoMic GO II is very easy to use, the sound quality is excellent, and it is plug and play with both my Fujifilm X-T3 and my iPhone XR. I use it record my son's outdoor sporting events. The directional mic does not pick up my breathing like the built in mic on my camera, and it records better sound of the subjects in frame. The included windscreen is good, it reduces wind noise, however on very windy days you will need the optional dead cat windscreen. The Rode mic app for the iPhone records 24-bit wav which is good. This is a great general purpose starter mic at a good price.

Having both 3.5mm jack and USB-C jack is Key! No XLR needed

This mic having both a 3.5mm jack and USB C jack is Key! I use the 3.5 when mounted on my camera cold shoe, with very short patch cord. But I use a long (33 foot) USB C cable when I put this mic on a boom and connect it to my computer. The USB C jack is a digital signal so immune to RF interference--dead quiet. A 33 foot analog 3.5mm cable would be way too noisy with RF hum. Running USB C right into computer is much easier to work with (and cheaper) than a full XLR setup (the usual way to keep the signal quiet).

My first Rode product ever and I'm impressed!

I ordered this mic a few months ago and it was a long shipping because I live in Russia. But when I got this I become completely happy. My previous mic was BOYA BY-mm1. It's not bad but Rode have a bunch of features that I like and really use! Thanks B&H for your service and I hope you'll keep sending good to Russia.

Better Than An Internal Microphone!!

By Stanley

I use my Canon EOS Mark II camera to video my grandson's baseball games. I purchased this shotgun microphone to reduce some of the local chatter and noise that is normally picked up with the camera's internal microphone. I must admit that I wasn't overly impressed the first couple of times that I used it and thought I had wasted my money on this purchase. However, after continued use, I began to notice that the directional capability of this microphone was enhancing the audio of the game. There are now portions of the game that the microphone provides that were not loud enough for the internal microphone to detect before, which makes the game more interesting to watch now. I changed my mind about this microphone and would recommend this product to someone looking for a microphone that will improve the recording of your audio for a decent price. It's not the most expensive microphone available, but it is accomplishing the task it was designed to do, at least for me. I do have the option of adjusting the volume on my camera, but have not found that to be necessary so far. Chatter and noise is not eliminated, which is not expected at a sporting event, but it seems to be less of a distraction than before because of the directional properties of the microphone. The unit comes with a convenient attachment for a camera hot shoe, along with the windscreen (not the best, but better than nothing) and a dual 3.5mm plug for connecting to the microphone and the input jack of my camera. There is also an optional USB-C port for connection to mobile devices or computer, but the cable is not supplied for that type of application. I registered this product online, and got the warranty extended to two years at no cost. I am very pleased with the purchase.

Small Rode Big Sound

This may be one of my favorite Rode mics simply because it's small(er), internal battery (no more charging!), plug-and-play, and a fantastic sound. Oh and under $100 bucks too! Currently using it on a boom in my studio but plan on making this my go-to travel mic too. Must-have for any serious content creator.

How not to love this mic? It's a Rode!

Tried out and returned a couple of low-end USB mics (Bl*e) for recording voice tutorials/live instructional videos in a room. The Rode VideoMic GO II was a clear improvement, rejecting more room noise/low frequencies than the cardioid settings on the other mics.

You can only hear the sound on playback, not during recording. I have attached a microphone on the lightning port and a headphone on the 3.5 port of my iphone 6s plus. It does not work like a dslr where you can hear the sound as it records. I tried doing it without a microphone. Without a microphone attached, I tried recording video and listened on a headphone and no sound came out while recording. On playback, yes, you can hear what you recorded.

Can this mic send a monitoring feed from the 3.5mm jack? Meaning that I could use a splitter to separate the feed going to my camera and monitor the mic? Thanks!
Asked by: walter
The Rode VideoMic GO II requires either plug-in power or USB power to function. If the mic is connected to a camera's 3.5mm mic input to function using plug-in power, its 3.5mm output cannot be split or it will not receive the voltage it needs, When the mic is powered via USB, the 3.5mm output can be used as a headphone jack to monitor the audio. With that in mind, if the mic is receiving voltage via USB, then you should be able to use the 3.5mm output with a splitter to send analog audio to your your camera and headphones.
