Ilford Pop-Up Darkroom Overview

The Ilford Pop-Up Darkroom presents a portable solution for film photographers, providing a light-sealed working space suitable for developing and print-making on the go, or in any situation where space may be at a premium.

You can set this darkroom tent up almost anywhere, it has an external metal frame which stands at 7.2' tall when extended, and creates a 4.3 x 4.3' workspace. Durable lightproof black material encloses the frame and attaches to it with clips, and an accompanying ground mat protects your floor and can be fastened to the pop-up darkroom to seal light out completely.

A built-in air vent towards the base of the darkroom allows for an optional fan or air blower to be used. Once sealed, the incoming air will expand the interior dimensions. The tent has a smaller vent closer to the top of the darkroom to facilitate air extraction.

The Pop-Up Darkroom contains a material loop at the top to hang a safelight and can easily be folded down for storage or transportation in the included carry case.

Ilford Pop-Up Darkroom Reviews

A home darkroom option that was previously missing.

The bad: No written instructions, only a video. Several pinholes. Getting a good light seal in the bottom corners of the door is tricky. The good: After watching the video several times, I was able to assemble the tent on my own. The pinholes are not excessive, and easy to patch. Very spacious. With some creative table building, it should be possible to print up to 11x14 easily, and even 16x20 with some tray juggling. I bought this to set up semi-permanently in my basement. In no way is it perfect, but it allows me to have a slightly awkward darkroom, when the alternative was no darkroom at all.

Perfect for Wet Plate Work

Bought this hoping to have a portable darkroom for field Wet Plate Collodion work. Man, I already love this tent. This will open up many new creative opportunities for me to make tintypes and ambrotypes outside of the studio, and it may actually have use in studio as well!

Simple darkroom solution

I have been a tenter all my live long days, and is a finely constructed and easy to set up. I had to drill holes in my joists for the poles so that the tent could fit in my basement which has a 7 foot ceiling. I was able to make it fit, and still be easily taken down for travel to other locations. If you need the tent for indoors you will need a room with 8 foot ceilings.

many light leaks

Sturdy and quick to assemble (10 min) . However, there were hundreds of light leaks all along all the stitching and dozens of light leaks on the surface of the walls making this product not usable. Tape does not adhere to the inside material of the structure. In order to make the darkroom truly dark - without any light leaks - i sealed the holes with black silicone. An exterior blackout cloth was needed over the entry area to block light coming through the zipper areas.

Light leaks/Lots of potential

I've waited a long time for a product like this, and was very excited when it was released. Unfortunately I ended up returning mine. Once my eyes fully adjusted to the dark, I noticed there were light leaks like constellations all along the the spots where the tent fabric hangs from the exterior supports and pulls at the seams. If it was that bad upon first setup, in an indoor space with dim light, I'd imagine it would get even worse with extended use or in a setting with bright sunlight. It could probably be remedied in a future design if they added an extra strip of fabric on the inside over the seams, or had something like a rain cover on a normal tent that goes over the tent poles to give one more layer to protect against light. Other than that, it's pretty clunky to set up and break down in smaller spaces, and you'll really want to find a way to properly use the ventilation features to get airflow through this thing or it could get hot and humid very fast. As-is I would say this is a great option for alternative processes where the materials are not that sensitive to light (if only I still had my collodion equipment, I'd have kept the tent), but I wouldn't want to do things like handle undeveloped film inside this for fear of fogging. This product does have lots of potential, and it's great to see Ilford using their resources to put this out into the world, but the first release wasn't quite there yet. I hope it gets some improvements down the road.

When i opened mine all of the inside rubber had some sticky strong smelling residue that i had to clean off so it wouldn't get on my clothes or chemistry, tent works great for doing wet-plates in the field.
