Kirk BL-R3 Reviews
Very Flimsy and offers no support
I purchased the L bracket for the Canon R3 on the basis of the bracket for the 1DX Mark III which I found very good, albeit heavy. The bracket for the R3 is pretty much useless. It does not touch the left side of the camera and hence there is a lot of flexibility in the sideways direction. You basically need to fire the camera with a remote shutter cord not to introduce movement when pressing the shutter button. The base part of the L bracket is very good and fits the R3 snugly and very securely. I use a side mounted Gimbal-type tripod head and when the camera is attached in the landscape format using the side portion of the Kirk L bracket the rig (in this case a Canon R3 with say a Canon RF 28-70 f/2 lens) the whole assembly is very prone to movement. The bottom slot should have been slightly longer on the left side so that the side element touches the side of the camera. Although this is also the case with the 1DXm3 L bracket, its side element is much stronger. I guess I paid a princely sum for a bottom plate. Has really put me off Kirk products.
Great product at a good price!
I've owned other Kirk brackets before so I went with this over a more expensive brand. This one is just beautifully made and has a well-thought-out design. One of the other things I wanted was the QR (Quick Release) option for mounting the strap. As this is the same mount used for military weapons I trust it 100% not to let me down. Plus the ability to remove the entire strap when needed only takes a few seconds.
