The 77mm Softener 1.0 Filter from Hoya is a filter with randomly arranged drops of water on the surface of optical acrylic. The pattern subtly scatters light resulting in a picture with a clear focus and a soft gradation, and this effect is especially evident in an object with a point light source, like a candle or match.

Very nice filter, can give you subtle effects with different lighting conditions. Fun to experiment with.
This filter gives a beautiful rounded haze and foggy atmosphere to your photos. I've found it is most effective in brighter conditions as the softening will make sharp images feely a bit blurred At the 77mm size, I'm able to use on multiple lenses and stack with other filters as well to make for some unique stylistic shots. It may not be an everyday application, but it comes through wonderfully for it's desired intention.
