Meticulously crafted to meet the challenges of reportage and press photography, the Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter Limited Edition Digital Camera is distinguished by its commitment to image quality and understated practicality. Both the red Leica dot on the front and the engraving on the top plate are inconspicuously omitted, letting you work without drawing undue attention to yourself. The camera features a 47.3MP monochrome sensor, which is used for the sole purpose of recording vivid and rich black-and-white imagery. The Monochrom Reporter Edition retains Kevlar body armor, a synthetic material known for its exceptional resilience. Over time, exposure to naturally occurring UV rays will change the material's color, until it matches the dark green, highly scratch-resistant finish of the camera body. In addition to these traits, the Leica Q2 Reporter offers the same level of protection against dust and water infiltration as the original Q2 model.

Compared to a standard CMOS sensor, this specialized monochrome sensor omits the color filter array to enable recording of just luminance values for greater visual depth and clarity, along with improved sensitivity to ISO 100,000 and reduced noise levels to suit working in difficult lighting. The sensor's design also sees the omission of an optical low-pass filter, and inclusion of an updated microlens array, which helps to produce sharper, higher resolution imagery.

The camera features the same impressive wide-angle prime Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. fixed lens, which has been matched to the sensor design for exceptional resolution and clarity. The lens design incorporates three aspherical elements and its bright f/1.7 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions. Additionally, a macro setting permits working with subjects as close as 6.7" away.

Complementing the imaging and optical assets, the Q2 Monochrom Reporter Edition remains an especially compact and intuitive camera, well-suited for street and travel photography. Its sleek magnesium alloy body is protected by a Kevlar covering for working in trying environments, and it has adopted the same battery featured in the flagship SL mirrorless camera for longer battery life. A high-resolution 3.68MP OLED electronic viewfinder is featured for fluid and clear eye-level monitoring and a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD also affords straightforward playback and settings control. Built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi permit wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device via the Leica FOTOS app.

47.3MP B&W Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Processor
Featuring a truly unique imaging system, the Q2 Monochrom Reporter incorporates a high-resolution 47.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor, which pairs with the Maestro II image processor to deliver a wide dynamic range with notable tonal rendering, as well as enhanced sensitivity to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The sensor's design features an updated microlens array and omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve greater sharpness, resolution, and clarity. Additionally, differentiating itself from typical sensor designs, the Q2 Monochrom Reporter sensor omits a color filter array (CFA), which offers the ability to solely record monochromatic imagery using only luminance values for enhanced clarity, depth, and resolution. By removing the CFA, this camera also achieves a higher sensitivity range of ISO 100-100,000 than the color-enabled Q2 camera, along with reduced noise to suit working in difficult lighting conditions and a broad 13-stop dynamic range.

The Maestro II's processing capabilities also afford fast shooting performance, up to 10 fps at full-resolution with a mechanical shutter, along with an especially quick autofocus system. Stills can be recorded as 14-bit DNG files and JPEGs. The added resolution also enables unique digital zoom capabilities to simulate working with different focal length lenses: 30MP images can be created using a 35mm field of view, 15MP images with a 50mm field of view, and 7MP with a 75mm field of view.

In addition to stills, and unique among Monochrom cameras, this Q2 supports both DCI 4K24p and UHD 4K30p video recording, along with high-speed Full HD recording at up to 120p.

Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
Key to the popularity of the Q-series is the incorporation of a fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 wide-angle prime lens. Blending Leica's optical know-how with a design perfectly matched to the image sensor, this lens incorporates three aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations for sharp and accurate rendering. Its fast f/1.7 maximum aperture also excels in low-light conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Extending its versatility, a dedicated macro focusing position can also be used for working with subjects as close as 6.7" away. Additionally, optical image stabilization helps to compensate for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.
Body Design
  • High-resolution 3.68MP (1280 x 960) OLED electronic viewfinder provides a clear and realistic means for eye-level viewing. Its high refresh rate virtually eliminates lag and an updated eye sensor provides faster automatic switching between the EVF and the rear LCD.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a touchscreen design for intuitive navigation and playback, as well as the ability to touch to focus.
  • Lightweight magnesium alloy body and a Kevlar synthetic fiber covering for dust and moisture sealed performance for use in harsh environmental conditions.
  • Unobtrusive design enriched with matching details that fit the concept of the M10-P Reporter
  • Discreet design with no Leica logo on the front and no engraving on the top
  • Robust matte green finish is scratch and fingerprint resistant
  • Adoption of the BP-SCL4 battery, as used with the SL (Typ 601) mirrorless camera, affords an improved 370 shots per charge and the battery's physical design incorporates a rubber gasket to further reinforce the overall weather sealing.
  • Enhanced haptics, following suit of the M10 and CL-series cameras, emphasize a simpler interface, including a single-stage On/Off button, a three-button rear control set, a programmable button within the thumb-wheel dial, a push-button diopter adjustment, and a distinctive thumb grip.
  • Mechanical shutter affords flash sync speeds up to 1/500 sec.
  • Lens features a 49mm filter thread diameter for attaching optional filters.
  • Accepts one SD-type memory card and supports the UHS II protocol.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi, when used in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app for iOS and Android, permits sharing imagery directly to a linked mobile device and also enables remote control over the Q2 and remote shooting via a live view image. Additionally, Bluetooth LE helps to maintain a permanent connection between the mobile device and the camera, enabling remote waking of the camera and automatic connection anytime within range.

Leica Q2 Monochrom Reviews

Three dimensional wizard!

The sensor in this camera is nothing short of amazing. The first shots I've taken of mountain landscapes just pop off the screen. The rendering and depth of the image are so impressive and so much better than shooting other cameras in color or B&W and converting the file. Worth every penny

Just what I wanted

This camera is everything I had hoped it would be. The low light sensitivity is fabulous. Whatever grain is present just added to the photograph. Manual focus is a breeze. The Q2M feels great I'm my hands. Very sturdy. I have no regrets purchasing this rather expensive camera

It's 28mm, it's black and white. If you want to be forced to create outside of the camera itself but get incredible quality images it doesn't get any better than the Q2 Monochrom. I'm obsessed.

RAW Images are absurdly good

Camera is what it is, not going to comment on value or usefulness to the general camera using public. Biggest pro: The RAW images at 100 ISO can be pushed to extreme levels without losing any details or adding noise. Images may not be that impressive straight out of the camera, but you can literally do whatever you want with them in post. Your creative vision is the only limit. Biggest complaints: Manual exposure times are limited to 2 minutes at 100 ISO, and only get shorter as you increase the ISO. You can't turn off auto-noise reduction. Weird ghosting/flares if the sun is in the frame.

One of a Kind

47mp files of pure un-interpolated 14bit digital luminosity, image stabilization, autofocus, unbeatable low light and high ISO performance, a silent, vibration free shutter and a lens worth several thousands on it's own. I am a Leica M owner with a collection of those amazing lenses, but I wanted to simplify my existence, forget about color and changing focal lengths. The this is one of the purest, most powerful cameras ever made.

The Perfect Answer to My Needs

Despite being a quite fit 70 year old, (creating primarily B&W fine art) I've had increasingly painful, arthritic fingers when hand-holding my heavy, full frame equipment for long periods, the last two years. Against my strong desire to continue my work, the discomfort was so bad at times that it actually put me off my art. The answer was the Q2 Monochrom. A real surprise: My monochrome files are now, to my eye, more beautiful than those produced by my former Sony prime lens lineup. I thought perhaps the 28mm lens restriction would be a deal breaker, but after renting a unit, I found that with cropping, I could get 95% of what I was accustomed to, resulting in extremely high quality RAW files. Admittedly, at first the cost held me back a bit...until I rented a unit and experienced the lighter weight, the ease of operation, and most of all, the astounding image quality of the Q2M. So grateful for my transition to Leica.

Images from this camera rival medium format - yes, they're that good. You're forced to think in black and white but that's a good thing. It's fun and different. Just like the old days!

A game changer

I've shot a lot of different cameras over the years, from the Leica M6 to Pentax, to Canon to the latest Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III and other more obscure stuff (Bessa R2A, etc). And they all have their trade-offs. This one is utterly good as long as you know what you are doing. I've had an explosion of compliments on photos I've shared since I got this camera. If you follow Peter Karbe's advice on how to use his lenses, it will change the way you take pictures. Listen to his lectures on Leica lens designs, but the gist of it is there is so much useful resolution out of this lens-sensor combo that it is no longer necessary to prioritize composition. Instead you should prioritize capturing the decisive moment and re-compose in post-process. Effectively we have reached a point that digital zooming has little to no impact on your capacity to produce a high quality image, right up to 75mm equivalent. It is hard to believe till you see it. Again, following Karbe's advice, do not stop down to improve image quality, as the micro-contrast is there from f/1.7 on and well distributed over the image field. I actually prefer the bokeh of the 28mm at f/1.7 as it is less abstract and more natural than the kind you would get from the 50mm Summilux. The 50 lux is great lens obviously, but the background becomes so blurred and abstract that it removes all context for the subject to tell a story. There are situations where this is just fine, and the 50 is called for, but in most cases, you do want to be able to have the 3D feel but with a more gentle bokeh that can provide context. For people, such as myself, who are obsessed about image quality, perhaps too much, this is a great camera. The dynamic range is insane and is immediately useful to render very subtle skin tonality. This gives images a true 3D feel to them. Things I would improve on the camera: - instead of just frames, actually show the digital zoom in the viewfinder - improve the autofocus face detection. (My Olympus E-M10 is way better than the Q2M)

There's a small button on the camera-back, below the shutter speed dial. By default is selects various cropping sizes. It can be customizable though. Can you set this button to be a back-focus button, instead of pressing halfway on the shutter button on the camera's top?
Asked by: Kurt
According to page 149 of the Leica Q2 Monochrom Digital Camera's instruction manual, the Zoom/Lock button on the back of the camera may be programmed for use as Digital Zoom or as Metering Memory Lock (AEL/AFL, AEL, AFL). Page 47 states how to adjust the settings. It states the factory setting is Digital Zoom, but you may alternatively assign automatic exposure metering and/or metering memory lock to the Zoom/Lock button. It states select [Customize Control] in the main menu, select [Zoom/Lock button] in the submenu, then select [Digital Zoom], [AEL/AFL], [AEL], or [AFL]. To access the assigned menu function, press the Zoom/Lock button briefly.
