Apple Mac Studio Reviews

Super happy with the purchase. Really liking it so far.

I was doing some really heavy after effects work on my 2019 Macbook Pro and the 16gb of Ram wasn't cutting it. Figured rather than buy another laptop I thought I'd get a dedicated editing computer. Even at 64gb of Ram and the top end processor for this model it can be a bit sluggish with super intense editing jobs but it's still about 3x faster than my Macbook. I'm not super keen on forking over the bucks for a higher end comp but this is doing what I need it to and faster. One thing I'm really impressed by is how whisper quiet it is. Even when I'm rotobrushing a 2 minute clip there is hardly a peep. Shipping was exceptionally fast. Ordered at 2 on a Friday, reached out 30 mins later to see if I could upgrade to the 2tb model but it had already shipped and arrived the next day. I ended up buying a Lacie Thunderbolt 2tb for the same price as the upgrade and I think that was the right move.

Great chip and form factor.

Incredible cooling. Wish this chip was optimized for most applications. Best used with Resolve. Wouldn't recommend to most people (way overkill).

The efficiency of the computer has evaporated my render times as a pro voice actor, and when I need to multitask with multiple processor hungry apps the performance remains smooth and fast.

As advertised great upgrade from my 2019 Pro (for me)

Best Mac Ever

I purchased the Ultra with 128GB memory and 4TB SSD to future-proof my investment. I have had the Studio Ultra for only ten days, so I cannot yet comment on its long term viability. However, right out of the box I found: 1) blazing fast GPU speed, double that of my best laptops; 2) absolutely cool and dead silent operation even under heavy load; 3) a delightful array of ports, more than I am likely to ever need; 4) remarkably small footprint for so much power; 5) ability to drive (2) large displays (5K, 4K) flawlessly. I very much doubt that I will be disappointed with the machine, and I have never been disappointed with B&H. Jim M

My first hand experience using this unit is outstanding. I upgraded from a 2018 MBP (i7 with 32 GB Ram) and this machine just kills it. It's amazingly fast. I use Logic and FCX and this machine is just fast. I use the unit with the Apple Studio Display and the experience is amazing. I would highly recommend the Studio Display with the Mac Studio. Look no further.

If the M1 Max is so fast, could I get away with less RAM? If M1 Max, and editing video (in DaVinci Resolve), from two cameras, 4k & 6k, how much RAM will be sufficient? 16GB?

Mac Studio doesn't have a 16GB RAM option. It has minimum 32GB upgradable to 64 or 128GB unified RAM memory. Mac mini M1 has 8 or 16GB unified memory.

Carlos is correct. There is a version of Parallels that runs natively on Apple Silicon, but you have to obtain the ARM version of the Windows OS, which can only be done via the Microsoft Windows Insider Preview program.

Can you change the freakin' ssd without fear of destroying the motherboard or becoming a glue expert?
Asked by: bart
Not at this time. Apples M devices are not like traditional Intel computers with interchangeable components. Eventually (this device has only been available for a week now) 3rd party upgrades will likely be available but I would recommend purchasing the internals you might need now if considering this computer. Or buy a last-gen Mac Pro used which should see dropping prices soon.

Is the internal SSD faster than buying an external SSD? I'm considering the SanDisk Extreme Portable 2 TB which advertises read speeds of 1050 Mbps, I want the best performance for 4K video editing
Asked by: Jake
Just got a M1Max laptop and the internal ssd is about 5500-6000MBps using Black Magic Speed test. Sandisk Extreme reaches about 900MBps connected directly to a USB-C port (no hub). Ive found slowdowns while editing 4K single or two camera setups to come more from codec selection than drive sped (proxies still recommended for high frame rate h265 and drone footage).
