Designed for Creators
A compact design with superb optics and a power zoom function makes the Sony PZ 16-35mm f/4 G an ideal choice for all types of creators, whether that means you shoot video, stills, or both. This ultra-wide lens is among the lightest in its class and the constant f/4 aperture strikes an ideal balance that is bright enough for available-light shooting while remaining portable for all-day shoots.
Optimized for Video
A perfect companion for content creators, this lens's key features are ideal for video applications, including Power Zoom, suppressed focusing breathing, and versatile focus handling, along with a well-balanced design that performs well when mounted on a gimbal or drone or used handheld:
  • The electronically controlled Power Zoom mechanism enables making smooth zooms during takes, with control possible via the lens body or from select camera bodies.
  • Power Zoom can be used in conjunction with Sony camera's Clear Image Zoom function, which can further extend the effective reach by up to 2x while maintaining near original image quality. If the lens's zoom speed is set to Slow, and the zoom control is performed remotely from the camera body, the zooming transition will be seamless from optical zoom to Clear Image Zoom.
  • Power Zoom mechanism uses four XD linear motors for precise, fast, and quiet zooming movement.
  • Internal zoom and internal focus design maintains the overall lens length during operation.
  • Aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent, and seamless iris switching during recording.
  • Smooth Motion Optics (SMO) suppresses focus breathing to help maintain compositional accuracy when changing focus. This lens is also compatible with the Breathing Compensation function in select Alpha cameras.
Optical Design
  • Wide-angle zoom design covers ultra-wide to standard wide focal lengths and a constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistency and a strong balance between brightness and a compact design.
  • Two Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements and one aspherical element help achieve high sharpness and suppress distortion and spherical aberrations.
  • Super ED and ED elements promote greater clarity and color accuracy by reducing chromatic aberrations.
  • One ED Aspherical element further contributes to impressive image quality by correcting for a variety of aberrations.
  • Special attention has been given to achieve consistent and sharp performance throughout the zoom and focus ranges for maximum versatility.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes a smooth bokeh quality.
Versatile Focusing Performance
An XD Linear Motor system uses two separate motors to provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for quick focus mode switching.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Suitable for close-up shooting, the minimum focusing distance at the 16mm position is 11" and, at the 35mm position, is 9.4" with a 0.23x maximum magnification.
Portable Design, Intuitive Handling
As a G lens, this 16-35mm f/4 prioritizes compactness and sports a lightweight design while still managing impressive optical performance and notable f/4 constant maximum aperture. The lens is also weather-sealed and features an intuitive design for easy operability, making it a versatile wide-angle go-to lens for hybrid shooters and content creators.
  • Impressively lightweight and sleek design suits everyday handheld use and is ideal for travel applications.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant design suits working in inclement conditions and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front element to resist dust, oils, and fingerprints, and to also make cleaning the front element easier.
  • Integrated Power Zoom control on lens barrel for simple focal length adjustment. When used on select Sony cameras, Power Zoom can also be used via on-camera controls.
  • Intuitive design includes separate aperture/iris, focus, and zoom rings for responsive and natural settings adjustment.

Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G Reviews

One of the best travel lens. Don't think, just buy it.

I have always been a prime-lens addict. I have 20mm f1.8, 24mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2 and 85mm f1.4 Sony lenses. However, I took the chance leaving all my primes home and brought only one lens, FE PZ 16-35MM f4 G, to my trip to Eastern Europe. I was worried about its low light performance, however, my A7IV handled low light situation without any problem and produced clean images with this lens. This lens is ultra light. If this lens has OSS, it would've been perfect.

The Sony AIV camera is certainly amazing but so many of the wide zooms are too large in size and weight. Not this one, it is perfectly balanced for the camera body, light weight but with a durable construction. And the lens does not extend out when zooming in which I prefer. This is the lens to get if you don't mind the f4 in exchange for better size, weight, and price. The images are beautiful, would certainly recommend this lens to others.

What a great lens for video

Was looking for a wide angle zoom for getting that wide shot when my 24-70 just wasn't wide enough. The 20-40 didn't give what I was looking for, so I went with the native Sony 16-35 PZ. Although it is only F4, sometime the 2.8 limits who's in focus and who's not. This works best for me when shooting video, which is my primary use. I get great results even in low light.

Very sharp lens, very lightweight, and even without OSS, coupled with the IBIS in the Sony A7iii, I was able to shoot handheld no problem and get sharp captures. The weather sealing held when caught in the rain. Zoom rocker takes a little getting used to but is silky smooth. Shooting at 16mm does capture some distortion, easily fixed in post. Great, lightweight, wide angle lens.

Great PZ lens, wish it had a bigger brother!

I bought this lens to pair with my FX3 for general purpose video work. Have used it for real estate jobs on a gimbal with great success. With the high ISO capabilities of the camera, the low light worries of this slower lens are gone. Would it be cooler if it was a 2.8? Yes. Does it need to be? No not really. Love it mounted on the FX6 too! Now all I want is a PZ 18/24mm - 105/135mm range lens of this same newer build method to replace the aging, heavy, and clunky PZ 28-135 that I'm beginning to think I could live without. That would make for a great combination.

"Power Zoom mechanism with control possible from select camera bodies." Which bodies and how? (Alpha1, via button assignment?)
Asked by: Mark
If it's like the 18-110 f4, the 18-105 f4 APSC lenses, and the FF 28-135 which are all servo lenses they can be controlled by the rotary zoom ring around the shutter release on the FX3 or by assigning the zoom function to buttons, the rotary ring on the back or to the joystick. On the A7SIII and the A7IV I have tried various assignments. I have assigned the Trashcan button to select the zoom function. I can use a press of the rotary dial left and right edges to zoom in and out. I also can use the joystick to zoom by pressing left or right on the joystick. To exit the zoom function either press the center button of the rotary dial or press directly in on the joystick button. The speed of the zoom functions can be set in the camera zoom menu. There are two zoom speed parameters. One to set the speed range when not recording video for quick zoom selection and framing and the second to set the zoom speed parameters whilst actually recording. The zoom assignments will also allow the setting of zooming optical only or optical and Clear Image Zoom combined. Chris Young
