RedWing RD-1600 overview

  • 1Description

The Red Wing Cocoon is an egg-shaped plastic cove made up of four translucent diffusion panels that are fastened with zippers for easy assembly and storage. It features three photo portholes so you can shoot your product from overhead, at a 45° angle or horizontally.

Position any type of light source around the cocoon, anywhere -- even from underneath, if you are set up on a shooting table, or glass.

It is specifically designed for the angle of view and focus needed by a 55 - 60mm macro lens on a 35mm camera or equivalent. To change background colors, simply unzip the Cocoon and insert a paper backdrop cut to size.

    RedWing RD-1600 reviews

Cocoon Shooting Tent 70 - Medium is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A decent job I use the cocoon to shoot jewelry and small pieces on white reflective acrylic mostly. It does ok, although I'm not sure I would buy it again if given the choice. There's no way to get stuff in, especially if you need to do it gently. If you put your arm through a hole, you can't see through it very easily. I'm planning to alter mine by taking the bottom out so I can get things situated then put it gently over the piece. All in all it does a good job though once you get setup.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from perfect for product photography I photograph products that are up to 8 x 14 in size using the Cocoon and it works great. It takes 5-10 minutes to set it up and 3 minutes to take it apart for storage. It has two round holes and a larger oval hole for shooting and to use in placing items inside the tent without having to unzip it.Diffusion from flash is excellent with little in the way of hot spots. I use it on a glass table so I can place strobes on both sides, at the rear, and under the table. With this approach I have no shadows around the object being photographed and post production is a breeze. What I like about the 3 holes is that I can set up the product and the strobes and then change only the camera position by using the different holes to get different perspectives. It really is a time saver and not something I could achieve with a standard fabric light tent. The fabric tents have wrinkles that always show in the pictures and require a lot of time in post production. Light tables are OK but they do not provide diffusion from all sides the way the Cocoon does. I also like that when it is taken apart it takes very little space to store it until it is needed again if space is at a premium. It is reasonably well made and durable and a great bargain at the price. I would gladly pay twice as much for the utility and time savings that this light tent provides.
