Venus Optics Laowa 20mm f/4 Zero-D Shift GFX Overview

Pairing an exceptionally wide angle of view with the ability to correct for perspective distortion, the Laowa 20mm f/4 Zero-D Shift from Venus Optics is an ideal lens for architectural and interior photography. Offered here in a FUJIFILM G-mount, the lens's broad 94° angle of view is complemented by an impressive +/- 11mm shift range to compensate for unwanted converging lines and keystone distortion. Additionally, as part of the Zero-D lens series, this lens also renders scenes with a high degree of accuracy and very low distortion.

In terms of optics, two aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements are featured, which reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. A water-repellent "frog eye" coating also protects the front lens element from water droplets and moisture. The lens uses a manual focus design for working with subjects as close as 9.8" away and has a fourteen-blade diaphragm for producing smooth and circular bokeh as well as specular highlights when stopped-down and photographing point light sources.

Ultra-wide 20mm prime is designed for use with FUJIFILM G-mount medium format mirrorless cameras where it provides a 16mm equivalent focal length.
As part of the Zero-D series, this lens has an optical design that renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit architectural, interior, and landscape applications.
Integrated +/- 11mm of shift adjustment helps to correct perspective distortion and eliminate keystone distortion.
Large image circle easily covers full-frame sensors without any vignetting. Additionally, this lens can also be adapted to select medium format mirrorless cameras, where up to +/- 8mm of shift is available.
Two aspherical elements limit spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality.
Manual focusing design and a minimum focusing distance of 9.8" suits working with close-up subjects.
Fourteen-blade diaphragm creates smooth and circular bokeh as well as specular highlights when stopped-down and photographing point light sources.
360° rotatable lens hood prevents unwanted lens flare and washed-out images and allows you to adjust the angle of the lens hood to avoid blocking the image during extreme shifts in composition.
Water-resistant "frog eye" coating protects front lens element from water droplets and moisture.
Compatible with optional Shift Lens Support for more balanced mounting and to better enable using the lens for shift-type stitched panorama shooting without parallax error.

Venus Optics Laowa 20mm f/4 Zero-D Shift GFX Reviews

Decent, but soft

Just like the 15mm shift zero-d, this one is also soft, except it's less prone to flaring. It also lacks contrast a little bit. I'm using it on GFX100S and please mind that on live view it's so soft that you are not sure did you focus properly when you zoom-in with focus magnifier, however the file is not as soft as the preview. Cons aside, this is the only glass of this kind, and covers the GFX sensor perfectly even when fully shifted 11mm in any direction. There is no standard wide-angle lens that can give you freedom in architecture as a shift-lens. Please ignore the comments like you can fix perspective in software today, when someone tells you that, just laugh, because it's nonsense. The build quality is excellent, focus ring is super-smooth and the aperture ring is clicky in an elegant way. Shifting mechanism is also well made and smooth.

Likeable ultra-wide for GFX

A pretty nice ultra-wide shift lens for the GFX system. Though it lacks the acute sharpness of the Fujifil primes, it is decently sharp and remains so pretty far from the center. Movements are somewhat limited probably - 6-8mm due to a falloff in sharpness and vignetting, but there is enough room to make shift useful. For panoramas, i would add a slider to the tripod head if you want a lot of coverage. The shift mechanism works very smoothly. Construction is robust and of high quality. The hood is virtually useless as it tends to cause mechanical vignetting. Better to leave it off. .the coating is pretty good, as I haven't detected an inordinate amount of artifacts nor veiling haze. Bokeh is not bad for an ultra wide. - kind of granular, like granola,, but not obnoxiuos or weird. Substantial in weight, but less bulky than Fujifilm's AF lenses. The focus ring is under-dampened.

A real added value which is added to the Fuji GF lenses,

I do emphasise heavily using the lens for landscapes & panoramas but a shift lens also once was used for single frame architecture keeping buildings 'straight'. Considering current software controls that allow such straightening, is there any reason to spend this much money for a shift lens other than using it for Landscape & panoramas Large sensors and lenses with better corners used with AI image improvement might make expensive mechanical answers to the problem less important today. A real added value to each Fuji GFX users So long Fuji will develop in the time frame of 2023 a Shift lens you can perform at present time to score with High ranking results in as Architectural and Landscape results
