Small Size, Huge Versatility

A refined take on the fast standard zoom, the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is not only smaller and lighter than the previous generation, it also features a variety of optical, focusing, and handling upgrades, catering to both photo and video applications, that make this the most well-rounded G Master zoom to date.

G Master Image Quality

Designed to rival the primes, this zoom's optics have been revamped to provide even greater resolution, clarity, and bokeh quality.
  • Bright f/2.8 constant aperture allows users to capture images in dim lighting conditions and with a shallow depth of field.
  • Two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED elements effectively suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and color fidelity.
  • Five aspherical elements, including two extreme aspherical elements (XA), minimize spherical aberrations, distortion, and also reduce 'onion ring' bokeh.
  • Nano AR Coating II controls flare and ghosting with support from a new optical design that reduces internal reflections.
  • An 11-blade aperture diaphragm helps create smooth, circular bokeh at all aperture settings.

Faster AF and Floating Focus Mechanism

Faster focusing performance, improved close-up shooting, and enhanced control are all benefits of the redesigned focusing system.
  • Four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors contribute to greatly improved focusing performance, compared to the DDSSM system of the predecessor, including faster, quieter, and more precise AF that's ideal for both photo and stills.
  • Faster AF means improved focusing when working with fast-moving subjects; support is available for shooting at up to 30 fps, full AF is maintained even when shooting stopped down, and focus tracking is possible even when changing the zoom position.
  • Floating focusing mechanism helps maintain image quality throughout the focusing range, which is especially important considering the impressive close-up performance of this lens: minimum focusing distance of 8.3" at the 24mm position or 11.8" at the 70mm position and a maximum magnification of 0.32x at the 70mm position.
  • Internal focusing design promotes snappier, more responsive focusing performance and also maintains the overall lens length during operation.

Improved Control and Video Capabilities

Just as camera design has grown to appeal to both photo and video shooters, this lens has also been updated with a series and attributes that specifically appeal to video shooters' needs.
  • Focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming have all been minimized to prevent unwanted movements and angle of view variations for greater compositional accuracy during recording.
  • Supports the Breathing Compensation function in select cine-line and Alpha cameras.
  • The XD Linear Motors are also especially quiet to better enable the use of AF during video recording.
  • Linear Response MF provides natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for silent operation and the zoom smoothness can be adjusted depending on the desired torque.

Compact, Lightweight, and Robust Design

Among the smallest and lightest f/2.8 standard zooms available, this lens doesn't lose sight of its professional attributes and also remains a weather-sealed, durable lens for use in trying working conditions.
  • Approximately 22% lighter and 18% smaller than its predecessor, this zoom is a highly portable and versatile option for a huge variety of shooting applications.
  • Now fit with a manual aperture ring, tactile exposure control is possible. This ring can be de-clicked for smooth and silent iris pulls or it can be locked in the 'A' position for camera-based aperture switching.
  • Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control.
  • Zoom smoothness switch for changing between Smooth and Tight zoom ring torque.
  • Hybrid construction uses both metal and plastic components to maximize both durability and a low weight design.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant design includes rubber gaskets at each seam and a rubber ring sealing the lens mount for ensured use when working in inclement weather conditions.
  • Front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.
  • Included lens hood features a locking button and a filter window for easier adjustment of rotating filters (e.g. polarizers, variable NDs).

Extremely clear and much lighter than the original. I found it very sharp and did not find any significant distortions. The aperture ring is useful as is the smooth tight switch on the barrel. I highly recommend this lens.

This is probably now my favorite lens. Excellent quality as one would expect from a Sony OEM lens and this lens I feel is worth the price paid. The lens features (2) lens buttons rather than one, that can be customized on your camera body. The dedicated aperature ring that can be set to auto (camera controlled) or manual is great for video use and the same goes for the manual iris lock. Would highly recommend this lens to A7Siii users as a great fast lens for most general use cases.

Great improvement over the original

I purchased the original 24-70GM when I got my first Sony in 2017. It was quite wonderful and compared well with my former Nikon 24-70 but it was HEAVY, noticeably so. Nowadays, I usually use primes for my serious work but wanted something more flexible for travel, granted at the cost of weight, bulk, and speed. My travel gear has been the 24-70, 85 f/1.8 FE for my people photos, and the 70-200 f/4 for longer images. Those three together weigh just over four pounds, not too bad. When I received my new GMII 24-70 I did my usual tests, a la Fred Miranda. I compared it to my primes in that range, the 24GM, 35GM, and 50GM as well as the manual focus Voightlander 50 f/2 APO. The primes were better than the 24-70 but not by a lot except for the 50 f/2 APO which easily surpassed all the other primes and zooms I've ever used. The GM II is a bit weaker in the corners than the primes but at the center, it's really hard to tell, even with pixel peeping at 100%. Overall, I'm rather pleased with this lens. For longer hikes when I don't want to carry a lot of weight, the 20G, 24-70GM II, and the 135 f/2.8 Batis make a formidable landscape grouping.

I can't say enough good things about this lens. I had the 24-70 F4 prior to this upgrade. And OMG! It's smooth, fast auto focus and amazing, precise, manual focus. It's light weight. This lens is just an all around amazing lens and definitely worth the upgrade.

I think I was the first!

I think I was the first to get this at BH. The lens is superb. It feels like what quality should feel like. Great video and photos quality. If you are in need of something worth your money, this is it.

Perfect lens for Video

I recently built a streaming rig. This lens is used as my main player camera and it looks amazing. Since the Sony camera and lens are attached via a clamp, and the rig needs to be a bit mobile, I needed a lens that not only had focal length range, but was also light weight. This lens if perfect for the job. Video (and images) are very clear with great color.
