UDM SE DIED After Only 16 Months

Disappointing Reliability I'm writing this review to express my significant disappointment with the UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition (UDM SE) I purchased approximately 16 months ago. While the device initially performed well and offered the robust UniFi ecosystem I've come to appreciate, it has suddenly and completely stopped powering on. I've attempted standard troubleshooting steps, including performing a factory reset and leaving the unit unplugged for an extended period, but neither has resolved the issue. The device is now a complete brick. This isn't my first negative hardware experience with a UniFi Dream Machine. A few years prior, a different UDM Pro unit I owned at another site entered a continuous boot loop, which I was fortunately able to resolve via an RMA. However, in this current situation, because I did not purchase the UDM SE directly from UniFi, I am limited to a one-year warranty. Having failed just four months past that warranty period, I am left with a very expensive, non-functional device. The sudden and complete failure of a core network device after just 16 months of use is unacceptable, especially given the premium price point of UniFi hardware. This repeated pattern of hardware failures raises serious concerns about the long-term reliability and quality control of Ubiquiti's Dream Machine line. While the UniFi software and ecosystem are powerful, they are useless if the underlying hardware is prone to premature failure. I urge potential buyers to consider the potential for short hardware lifespans and limited warranty coverage when making their decision. This experience has significantly eroded my confidence in Ubiquiti's hardware reliability.

    Great Piece of Gear

I'll start by saying that this is overkill for my use-case. I'm in a condo, and this is my primary network gateway for my home. I'm running an Unraid-based file server and a gaming computer, and I'm utilizing the integrated PoE port top run a 6+ AP for wireless coverage. The file server and gaming machine are both connected to the SFP connections for 10G. Set-up was a breeze; I actually started initial setup the day before I had internet, and offline setup was very simple to carry out, and getting connected to my Unifi account once I had an internet connection was simple.  The remote monitoring capabilities through unifi.ui.com is great to have access to, and IDS/IPS give great piece of mind. The daily speed tests are nice to see how consistent my ISP is, and make it easier to hold them accountable if they aren't reliable enough -- just as expected from a piece of gear meant for business use-cases. The interface was a little easy to get lost in at first, but after a few days of fumbling around I started to get comfortable with it and was more easily finding the settings I was looking for.  I'm not able to report on the Unifi Protect experience, as I don't yet have cameras to connect to it, but I can say that the Teleport function with the Wifiman app is very nice to use if you want to check up on local-only devices while you're away.  The insights and data are both also very nice to see. Being able to see Access Point density at a glance is very nice for seeing if you have any devices in your network with poor wifi reception, and you can even get a readout of general connection strength on a device over the last 24 hours so you can make informed decisions of access point changes. Extremely happy with the purchase so far, and look forward to settling in and getting more devices connected to this!!

What is max HDD drive for the UDM-SE?
    Asked by: Joseph
The Ubiquiti Networks UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition, (B&H # UBUDMSE), has been tested with drives up to 16TB in size. No specific limit has been set so in theory it could support higher capacities but this hasn't been officially tested so we could not guarantee it.

Have unmanaged 10 port 10Gbe with SFP+ and 16 port 1Gbe netgear switch. Can I use that instead of a Ubiquiti switch POE+?
    Asked by: Gary
It is possible in some cases to use an unmanaged switch with the Ubiquiti Networks UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition, but this is not recommended. The switch may not be properly reported as part of your UniFi network, and results can be unpredictable. It is recommended to use a UniFi switch instead.
