Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Reviews

Good but not great lens

I love my new Canon R7, but not this lens. Too much flare when capturing sunsets and sunrises. I'm also not crazy about the fact that this lens is not weather resistant. That's an important feature for nature photographers that spend most of their time outside in inclement weather. I've decided to by the RF-24-105mm f/4 lens. I'm hoping this lens will improve my sunset/sunrise pics.

This lens exceeds my expectations!!

I have had many Canon digital cameras besides the R7 such R5 and 5D mkIV. I have lots of lenses acquired over the years with many of them be L quality. I own the RF 24-240 which is one of the best travel 10X zoom lenses Canon has ever made. It is exceptional sharp and light for what it does. The RF-S 18-150 is an exceptional 8X zoom lens that is smaller and lighter. It very sharp and pretty sharp in the corners too. 18-85mm is really sweet and 85-150 is pretty good too though slightly softer in the corners. The aperture in the 185-150 range is f5.6-6.3 which work very with good light outside.

Wasn't planning on keeping it...

But I am!.... I bought the R7 body only but had been waiting over 2 months for it when I decided I couldn't wait any longer I switched my order to body + 18-150 kit lens thinking I would resell it.... I tried it just for giggles and was so impressed with it that I decided to keep it for a walk around lens when I don't want to be noticed with the big heavy L series lenses.... It's small and light and the images are very sharp (as long as you don't decide to crop a lot afterwards...) it doesn't replace the quality of good glass but definitely replaces my iPhone photos :)

I didn't want it but I now love it!

I only have this lens because Canon was not really shipping the R7 without it, so after two months I surrendered and switched my order from body only to the kit with this lens and B&H shipped the kit to me the same day. When I got my R7 I idly snapped a few shots, including a handheld shot of a music book on my piano about 30 feet away, 150mm f/6.3 at 1/40 of a second. The music book was in the bottom left corner of the frame. Enlarged on the camera's screen and EVF it was crystal clear! So the EF-S 18-135 IS nano USM lens I was planning to use will be just my video lens (I bought the power zoom for it on eBay when I realized it was long-discontinued and would disappear). The two lenses are about equally sharp, but the RF-S lens is much smaller and lighter!

The 1.6 crop feature, is that on all the time or is it a setting that can be turned on?
Asked by: Cynthia
Any EF-S or RF-S lens can only be used with a cropped sensor. On DSLRs that means EF-S lenses mount only on APS-C cameras, since a full-frame DSLR's mirror would be blocked from moving by an EF-S lens. On the R series, an EF-S (with the EF to RF adapter) or an RF-S lens will mount on an APS-C camera or on a full-frame RF camera. On a full-frame R series camera, the presence of an EF-S or RF-S lens will make the camera shift into APS-C mode, using just the inner 39% of the sensor. Thus the R5's 45MP would become 28MP. The other R cameras, with much lower starting resolutions, would end up with megapixel counts reminiscent of the early days of Digital Rebel cameras and thus probably should not use a lens like this.

Can this lens be used on other Canon cameras with an RF mount?
Asked by: Anton
Yes, the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens can work on other Canon EOS R bodies which have a full frame sensor. However, the image will crop since the lens is optimized for the APS-C sensors found in the EOS R7 and EOS R10.

I think you'd have to physically remove the RF mount and attach a EF-M mount to the lens body. Pretty dumb that Canon cannot in this day and age make lenses with interchangeable mounts!!!
