FUJIFILM X-H2S Mirrorless Camera
X-H2S: The New FUJIFILM Hybrid
Balancing strong photo and video capabilities, the FUJIFILM X-H2S is a multimedia mirrorless camera featuring a newly developed X-Trans stacked sensor, refined AF and subject detection, and impressive 6.2K video recording. Topping the X System, this camera mixes the intuitiveness, design, and image quality FUJIFILM is known for with a fresh, speedy approach to video and continuous shooting applications.
Stacked Sensor and 64-Bit Processing
X-Trans 5 Stacked BSI Sensor
The first X Series camera to feature a stacked sensor, the X-H2S sports an APS-C-format 26.1MP X-Trans 5 stacked BSI sensor, which ups the readout speeds and improves low-light performance compared to previous generations. First, as an X-Trans sensor, it uses the unique color filter array that inherently minimizes moiré and contributes to more natural color rendering; next, the BSI design helps reduce noise and improve tonality and clarity; and, finally, the stacked design greatly reduces rolling shutter and other motion distortion to better suit high-speed video and photo photo applications.
X-Processor 5
Partner to the newly designed sensor is a fresh engine—the X-Processor 5—which uses 64-bit processing to realize 3x faster speeds for both video and photo tasks compared to the X-T4. On the video side, this enables recording at up to 6.2K with high bitrates like ProRes 422 HQ or at high speeds, like with 240 fps recording at Full HD.

On the stills end, this quick processing means faster shooting to suit photographing moving subjects. When working with an electronic shutter, shooting at up to 40 fps is possible, with a buffer of 140 consecutive uncompressed raw frame. With the mechanical shutter, shooting speeds up to 15 fps are possible, along with the ability to shoot upwards of 1000 raw frames in a single burst.

Benefitting both video and stills applications, this processing also benefits the sophisticated and AI-backed autofocus system, helps achieve a 14-stop dynamic range, and enables a broad sensitivity range from ISO 160-12800.

Powerful Video Capabilities
4K 120p and 6.2K 30p Internal Recording
With a penchant for video, the X-H2S has a well-rounded recording system that places this camera squarely in the 'hybrid' category and performs equally well for video as it does for video. Internal 4:2:2 10-bit recording is possible in both DCI/UHD 4K at up to 120p and Full HD at up to 240p as well as an open-gate 3:2 6.2K setting that's suitable for anamorphic applications. A variety of codecs are supported as well, including H.265 and three tiers of ProRes: the high bitrate 422 HQ, the standard 422, and the more compressed 422 LT. Also, continuous recording times up to 90 minutes are possible at all frame rates and resolutions.
External Raw Recording
Using the full-size HDMI port, raw video recording is possible when paired with a compatible external recorder. Both ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW recording is possible, along with the ability to work with F-Log or F-Log 2 profiles, and either format supports working in resolutions up to the open-gate 6.2K.
Improved Autofocus and Image Stabilization
Hybrid AF with Deep Learning AI
Benefitted by the improved processing, autofocus performance is noticeably faster and more intelligent. This hybrid focusing system uses 425 phase-detection points and is now sensitive down to -7 EV for working in truly low-light conditions. Also, backed by deep learning, an AI adaptive algorithm means this focusing system is better suited to automatically detect and track a variety of subject types. Compared to previous focusing systems, the X-H2S's Face and Eye Detection capabilities have been refined for greater accuracy and to account for unique features, like glasses, face coverings, and hairlines. Also, the range of recognized subjects types has been expanded to include cars, planes, trains, motorcyclists, birds, horses, dogs, cats and more.
In-Body Image Stabilization
Built-in 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 7 stops. This system works in conjunction with most X Series lenses, including non-stabilized ones, and benefits working with slower shutter speeds and when shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, digital image stabilization can also be used during video recording to further aid in steadying footage, especially when recording handheld.
Body Design
Practical and Durable Design
  • Large OLED electronic viewfinder features a crisp 5.76m-dot resolution and a 0.8x magnification for bright, clear, and detailed eye-level viewing.
  • Rear 3.0" LCD has a high 1.62m-dot resolution and a touchscreen interface for intuitive control. Also, its vari-angle design means the screen can be flipped out to the side, tilted up or down, and closed with the screen against the body for protection.
  • 1.28" monochrome LCD screen on the top plate is a simple means for quickly reviewing shooting settings.
  • Dual memory card slots include one CFexpress Type B slot and one SD UHS-II slot for file-saving flexibility. The CFexpress Type B slot should be prioritized for higher bitrate video recording and fast continuous shooting, and the SD slot is a convenient alternative for backups or less speed-critical shooting.
  • NP-W235 battery provides approximately 720 frames per charge when working with the EVF in Economy Mode, or approximately 580 frames in Normal Mode.
Connectivity
  • Full-size HDMI Type A port for outputting video to an external recorder or monitor.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port supports tethering, data transfer, and in-camera battery charging.
  • 3.5mm headphone and external microphone ports for greater control over audio recording.
  • PC sync port for flash sync.
  • 2.5mm remote port for using wired remote controllers.
  • Integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wirelessly sharing images to a mobile device or to use the device to remotely control the camera.
Film Simulation Modes
Film Simulation modes allow you to reproduce the look and feel of several of FUJIFILM's film types, including Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Classic Neg., Nostalgic Neg., Pro Neg. Hi, Pro Neg. Standard, Eterna, Eterna Bleach Bypass, Acros, Monochrome, and Sepia. Additionally, Grain Effect can be adjusted as well as Color Chrome effect to fine-tune the look of imagery.
FUJIFILM MKX18-55mm T2.9 Lens (Fuji X-Mount)

The Fujinon MKX18-55mm T2.9 Lens in X-Mount is a lightweight cine-style zoom lens for X-mount cameras with a Super 35mm-sized sensor. The electrical contacts within the lens mounts allows communication with X-series cameras. It features a mechanical design with three independent lens control rings: focus, iris, and zoom. Each ring incorporates a cine-style gear with a 0.8 MOD for interfacing with standard cine -style lens accessories. The focus ring features approximately 200° of rotation, which provides room for precise focus pulls, and the iris is clickless, enabling smooth iris pulls. The lens also incorporates a macro mode for close focusing capabilities.

The lens is color matched to other Fujinon lenses such as the HK, ZK, and XK series, which enables smooth intercutting between lenses. The 85mm front enables use with many cine-style matte boxes via use of optional step-up rings (rings not included). The lens weighs only 2.16 pounds, which is fairly light for a cinema zoom that holds focus and aperture throughout the focal length range. It is designed for cameras with a Fuji X-mount, so it has a short flange focal distance, but the lens allows for flange focal distance adjustment so you can fine-tune it to the camera you are using the lens on.

The electical contacts within the lens mount enables communication with X-series cameras, which allows for correction of distortion and color/brightness shading to prevent vignetting. This communication also enables you to achieve a variety of color expressions when using Film Simulation modes.

FUJIFILM X-H2S Reviews

Poor QA and poorer service

Amazing camera BUT if you have a problem it will become a nightmare. I bought this camera to upgrade from my X-Pro2, but there was something that looked like dust on the sensor. I didn't see it until I started shooting landscapes, and tried to clean it multiple times, including at the local camera shop, but it didn't work, and the return period had already passed. So, I registered the camera and filed a warranty claim, and that's when the nightmare began. Fujifilm took almost a month for this repair. In the meantime, no communication was sent to me at all regarding the status, and only through my constant calling of the customer service line did I get updates. I even had to get my return tracking # through the customer service phone! The nightmare didn't end there, as I discovered that the problem was entirely left unresolved. I specifically noted that sensor cleaning didn't resolve the issue, yet they just cleaned the sensor, didn't even bother to inspect that the sensor was free of artifacts, and shipped it back. Now, I have to send it back again at the cost of many more weeks of time. The performance of this camera is amazing, yet the sensor defect and this ridiculous repair experience destroyed any love I had for the X-H2s, the X system and the Fujifilm brand. I will probably sell this after the warranty expires (as I had to register it, and the warranty is nontransferable...) and never get a Fujifilm again. I suggest anyone do the same.

Great even for sports

I am a College sports photographer shooting basketball, baseball, soccer, and more. I pre-ordered the XH2s immediately after watching the launch event and purchased my second XH2s a couple of months later. The grip is leaps and bounds better than my X-T4, and I highly recommend the battery grip if you shoot vertically or during long events. I also shoot motorsports and brought my two XH2s bodies to the 24 Hours of Daytona. They both kept up great and subject detection worked great even with cars moving in and out of frame extremely quickly. The recent Firmware 3.00 update was a tremendous improvement and has nearly changed the way I shoot. My hit rate has improved and has led to me keeping more pics to send to clients.

Best Mirrorless/Hybrid Camera

I'm happy with this purchase so far. I have had this monster for two months now and it's a very capable Hybrid camera. My first Fujifilm and I couldn't have asked for better. I shoot UHD ProRes 422 HQ in F-Log mostly. I'm yet to try 6.3K Open gate. Beautiful colours, grades very well. I bought this body together with the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 lens. I look forward to pairing this body with the Fujifilm MKX 18-55m f2.9

Mind blowing upgrade, with one flaw.

I've been playing around with this camera for a month now and i'm enjoying it so much! It's a huge upgrade from my old faithful X-T2 and the auto focus is so good! The camera is a lot more grippy than the X-Ts which is great and the beloved missing dials on the top will take some getting used to. I got this as a photography-centric camera mainly because of the stacked sensor, 40MP is overkill - and it's possible to get used to everything but i will probably swear every time i pull out that flippy screen. Bottom line, 5 star camera with a -1 star flip out screen.

For action shots, a significant improvement over the X-H1

I recently switched from 2, X-H1 bodies to 2, X-H2s bodies. The improved autofocus is a huge improvement. I use the cameras primarily for shooting live theater & concerts with often dim stage lighting. Also since the battery life is improved, I only needed a battery grip for the body that has the lens I use 80% of the time. The 2nd body's single battery last more than enough for a 2+ hour performance. I shoot in very short 15 fps bursts to capture "eyes open", etc. So I take a lot of shots during a performance.

Great camera that keeps getting better

What was already a great camera on release is now even better. Firmware updates to the autofocus mean this truly is the flagship Fujifilm model. It is highly capable at both stills and video.

The best camera I have owned!

I had decided to switch from my Sony a6300, and I needed a camera that was great at both video and photography. I was particularly tired of the rolling shutter artifacts in the a6300 which are close to worst in the industry. Also, the Sony colors just feel cold and clinical to me. Not bad, but extremely boring. As a filmmaker, I am not on the full frame band wagon, though as a photographer, that would be nice. I considered APS-C and FF cameras of multiple brands (including Sony), and even toyed with the idea of the MFT GH6. After much research, Fuji X-H2S fills the role I needed perfectly. The resolution on this camera is not much greater than what I was already using, but I never felt I needed bigger, so I am not missing the 40mpx of the X-H2. But what I am gaining is a super fast sensor with negligible rolling shutter, F-Log2 gamma for 14 stops of dynamic range, and those beautiful Fuji colors! Also internal ProRes in three flavors (LT, 422, and HQ), with data rates up to 750mbps. Photos and video from this camera look great. Definitely a pleasure to edit and grade after using the clinical S-Log2. More on par with grading BRAW or V-Log (both of which I have used extensively), but with a bit of extra sauce, if you will. The Fuji X-Trans RAW requires a bit of extra care, as Lightroom does not interpret it as well as it could. Capture One seems better, but probably the best result can be had through DxO PureRaw2 plugged into Lightroom. It is a little extra work, but then again, the Fuji also generates gorgeous JPG images with its built in film sims, so RAW editing is not needed as often. The film sims are fully customizable, and you can find hundreds of recipes out there to give you almost any look that you could want. I only jump into the RAW when need the most granular control. In low light, the noise pattern is pleasing, compared to Sony or Nikon. The maximum ISO 12800 is perfectly useable with Neat Video or even Resolve Studio's built in NR applied. 6K open gate is beautiful. 4K is perfect up to 120fps (120p has a crop, but is sharp and looks great). Unfortunately, the HD 240p is unusably bad (awful stair-step aliasing) for anything more than a curiosity. Hopefully this can be fixed in firmware, but if not, I don't consider it a huge loss. Coming from Sony APS-C, I found the interface easy to get used to. The AF system more than adequate, if not amazing (better than the a6300). I tend to manual focus a lot anyway. The X-mount ecosystem is not as well supported as the Sony E-mount, so that is a consideration. But I looked at the lens options and decided there was enough available to suit my needs. There are also options (Fringer or Fotodiox) to convert EF lenses with full AF capability, so that expands the offerings quite a bit. All taken together, if you need a camera that does both video and photography well, you cannot go wrong with this camera.
