ASUS StudioBook 16 2022 16" Reviews

Be Careful about BIOS Upgrades

I bought this computer and upgraded the ASUS BIOS, causing the ASUS ProArt StudioBook with Gen 13 i9 to hang (Brick). Others have begun to say the same thing on various web sites, especially those that sell everything from A to Z (hint, hint). Until ASUS indicates that they have this issue under control I would not purchase this model Otherwise you will be sending your brand new computer back for repair. By the way, I really liked it for the several hours I had it.

Outstanding Performance and incredibly detailed screen. If you are dealing with any kind of creative project this is an amazing laptop to spend your time with. i7 and the 3070ti graphics card is a prefect combination of performance and price. Having an OLED screen cuts down considerably on eye strain and fatigue as well. Highly recommended purchase if you need this kind of horsepower for your work. Fun gaming machine as a bonus!

Mixed positive

Very solid, metal construction; not svelte. Under high GPU load (e.g. gaming, video processing) it gets too hot to rest your hands on the metal chassis base up toward the screen, though not back near the user/trackpad or on the plastic keyboard keys. Port selection is excellent, but their accessible, side-mounted locations don't keep attached cables out of the way all that well. If they did, then the side heat vents would be closer to the user, creating a larger comfort problem -- I wish all the heat ducting could have been in back, but then the cooling might have been inadequate. I haven't yet run tests to see whether the heat is leading to throttling. When it's running hot, the fans are also quite loud, but under low load they're quiet enough. Chassis and screen both readily gather/show dust. The OLED is beautiful, but the screen is quite reflective, and there is a warping of the transparent overlay visible when the screen is off -- so far I haven't noticed the visual distortion while in use -- the rippling is irregular and exists across the screen area, but it's also low amplitude. This is a long list of negatives, but I still give it 4 stars because I consider such things inevitable by-products of putting so much CPU/GPU horsepower into a portable workstation device. It has been less than a month but as of now I would buy again.

From One Creative Professional to Another

As a video editor with 10+ years of experience in the industry there are 3 primary must haves for me in a mobile workstation. Build quality, performance, and reliability. I've had this laptop for a week now and while the specs are what I wanted out of a upper mid-level studio laptop, it's got some qwerks. 1. Build Quality: 3.75/5 ' Not the worst, but I was expecting something a little more sturdy for the price range. It isn't bad, but it does make me a little nervous taking this out into the field as I don't feel like the chassis will come out unscathed after 2 - 3 jobs on location. It says sturdy, military grade, undergone rigorous tests, and all that jazz but I question how true that really is coming having come from a Macbook Pro. 2. Battery Life: 1.75/5 ' Probably the lowest performing metric here. Since this is laptop and it's marketed as a mobile workstation I was expecting to get around 4 - 6 hours of battery life with average use (emails, web browsing, video teleconferencing, etc.). Unfortunately, I've only been able to squeeze out about 2 1/2 hours on a full charge. Even less if I start using more power hungry apps (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, DaVinci Resolve, and so on), or bump up the power usage mode. Though I suppose it's to be expected when you're sporting power hungry hardware like a 40 series gpu and an Intel i9 24 core processor. 3. Performance 4.5/5 ' This is the meat and potatoes of any laptop because at the end of the day it's about speed. How well does this laptop perform? In my tests thus far it's fast. There's no doubt about it. If you bump up the power mode it can also double as a portable grill. Supposedly there's room for future upgrades like internal storage and RAM. I'll update this review if and when I do this. 4. Display 4/5 ' The OLED display is indeed beautiful. Especially when HDR is turned on. Colors are vibrant and crisp and the ability to show pure black by turning off pixels makes for beautiful images. The 3200x2000 resolution and 120 hz refresh rate gives plenty of screen real estate and videos in high frame rates look super smooth! Why 4 stars? The touchscreen. While neat, is nothing more than a trendy marketing gimmick brought about by the increase of tablets in the content creation space. I have never known any professionals in the filmmaking or graphic design world who benefitted from a touchable display in a laptop. I know a few graphic and motion designers who use touchscreen functionality but they all use some sort of tablet (iPad Pro, Microsoft Surface, etc.) in tandem with their main workstation. Never in their laptops. I really wish this was pulled in favor of something more useful like a bigger battery. 5. Ergonomics 4/5 ' There's lots to love here. 16 chassis, a full size backlit keyboard, plenty of options for anything from connecting to an external display, hard wired internet, accessories, and 2 USB A and Thunderbolt 4/USB C ports. I haven't fully tested how performance is affected when plugging in more than 1 - 2 accessories. I would have given this 5 stars if not for the jog wheel next to the trackpad. It's not like it doesn't work and it's built into the frame so it lays in the surface preventing your hands from getting obstructed by it. But it isn't practical. If my experience changes I'll update this review. Overall: 3.75/5 ' For the price, you're getting a lot of great features here. The display is stellar even with the touchscreen. The hardware is up to par for most modern media workflows. Plenty of ports to support all of your preferred accessories. So why the 3.75? Poor battery life and I've already run into a system crash (blue screen of death). Even though BSODs are not as detrimental as they were in older versions of Windows it's still annoying and makes one question the reliability and longevity of your purchase.

Almost perfect.

I got the H7600 Intel variant with a 3070ti. The reason for only four stars is that the bios is very limited. I replaced the ram with 5200 speed sodimms but can't change the xmp profile in bios so it's running at 4800.

The Asus ProArt StudioBook OLED 16 Series does not come with a license for Windows 10. If you have or are able to buy a Windows 10 license, you could install it yourself. However, it is not possible to "downgrade" to Windows 10 without purchasing a separate license.

How loud is fan noise? How hot does it get?
Asked by: Tina
The fan noise is not so bad. At full speed (heard during a hardware test) its moderate. Its a mid-pitch none the less so even when under load its not so bad. Tested a number of laptops with similar specs and design such as the Galaxybook Ultra and XPS 15 / XPS 17. Under load this one was least offensive.
