Nimble Super-Telephoto
Described as "the smallest and lightest 400mm Nikon has ever created," the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S is a super-telephoto prime mixing unique portability with long reach, advanced optics, and apt AF and VR. It's a well-rounded lens for the traveling sports or wildlife shooter looking for a handheld design and capable reach for photographing distant subjects.
Long Reach, Compact Design
Distinct among super-telephoto lenses, this 400mm f/4.5 is especially sleek and lightweight, making it an ideal companion for travel or other shooting scenarios where handheld shooting is preferred.
  • Sophisticated optical design includes a series of specialized elements that promote a lighter, more compact overall design.
  • Modest f/4.5 maximum aperture offers a practical balance between size, speed, and weight.
  • With a size more akin to a 70-200mm f/2.8, this lens measures just 9.2" long and weighs 2.7 lb. Compared to the Z 400mm f/2.8 lens, this f/4.5 version weighs 3.8 lb less and measures 6" shorter in length.
S-Line Optics
  • Helping to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations, color fringing, and comatic aberrations, this lens features one ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element and two Super ED elements, along with one SR (short-wavelength refractive) element.
  • The SR element features a specialized high-dispersion design that refracts wavelengths shorter than blue; this helps achieve truly accurate color rendering and also aids in making the lens design more compact.
  • Nano Crystal Coat has been applied for well-rounded anti-glare protection at all angles, helping to suppress ghosting, reflections, and flare for higher contrast and more accurate color response when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions.
Autofocus and Vibration Reduction
  • Advanced autofocus system uses stepping motors to deliver quick and accurate focusing performance, along with smooth and quiet AF that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Vibration Reduction image stabilization reduces the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
  • Synchro VR is also supported when paired with compatible cameras featuring sensor-shift VR, which combines in-body VR with optical VR for improved results of up to 6 stops of compensation.
Professional Handling and Construction
  • As part of the lightweight, nimble design, the included tripod foot can easily be removed for a slimmed down design that's ideal for handheld use.
  • Physical design focuses the center of gravity toward the rear of the lens, around the tripod mount, for smoother, more responsive panning when shooting handheld or working atop a tripod or monopod. The tripod mount also rotates for easier switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientations.
  • Intuitive "no-look" control layout puts all of the frequently-used buttons and dials in easy-to-reach locations to prevent the need to move your eye from the viewfinder.
  • Front anti-slip rubber grip for stable handheld use.
  • Separate manual focus ring and a programmable control ring offer distinct levels of tactile control over shooting settings.
  • Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.
  • Weather-sealed design includes rubber gaskets to prevent dust and moisture ingress and the exposed elements have a fluorine coating that repels dirt and oils and is easier to clean.
  • Store a focusing position using the Memory Set button so you can instantly return to this by position by pressing the Fn or Fn2 buttons—perfect for capturing fleeting movements.
  • Two customizable L-Fn buttons can be set to configure subject tracking, AF lock, image playback, or other modes. The L-Fn2 button is also accessible from four different locations on the barrel for easy reach.
  • Focus limiter switch can constrain the focus range to 19.7' to infinity or from the full focusing range of 8.2' to infinity.
  • Programmable Control Ring can also be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
  • Kensington lock support for securing the lens in place during remote shooting sessions.
  • Uses front screw-in 95mm filters.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S Reviews

Worth the wait.

Another great Z lens by Nikon. Took a while to get it in stock, but was worth the wait. Very sharp and very light. Shot an entire MLB baseball game (over three hours) with it while handheld and no monopod. Definitely recommended.

Lightweight and fast focus

I had heard this lens was light but was still surprised at how light when I received it. With my Z7 II It focuses very fast by itself and slightly slower with the 2x teleconverter. The image quality is very sharp even with the 1.4x teleconverter. With the 2.x teleconverter you can see some softening but it is easily correctable in post. Using the 2x teleconverter at f9 in low light is problematic, slow to focus. Overall I will probably sell my 100-400mm lens now as I mostly used it at 400mm anyway.

Thoughts of a Reluctant owner of the 400mm f/4.5 S lens

Since I received my Nikon Z9 (my first mirrorless camera) in Jan, 2022, I have been looking to buy my first lens designed for a mirrorless Nikon camera. I first tried the 100-400mm but since I mostly shoot wildlife, I used that lens with the Z 1.4TC and did not find the combo as sharp as my 500mm f/5.6 and did not have a second mirrorless camera to use it on any close-up wildlife I would stumble across. Since I am still waiting to receive my copy of the 800mm f/6.3, I decided to try the 400mm f/4.5. When I compared the 400mm plus the Z 1.4TC with the 500mm PF, it appeared as sharp as the latter (though slightly heavier than the 500mm PF plus adapter). Moreover, it is as fast if not faster in focussing. When used without the TC, the extra light is an advantage for more low light situations. I am still awaiting a 2.0 Z TC to try that on the 400mm lens. So for those who already have a 500mm PF lens (which works great on the Nikon mirrorless cameras even with a TC), it is a close call of whether to get the Z 400mm. For those who have the mirrorless system and don't have a long lens, the Z 400mm is great! A few pics are shown below which highlight some of the advantages of the Z 400mm lens (more on my Flickr site):

Love it, i had it less than a week and already one of my favorites, really hand holdable and i may say, sharper than the 70-200mm Z wide open. I need to do more tests but it is SHARP, and the focus with the Z9 its so great. i have done some tests you can find in my YTchannel Eliud Gil Samaniego and Flickr so you can pixel peep pictures SOOC. I really like it a lot and since the 2.8 version its unavailable, this is a GREAT choice, at least for day use since its f4.5

This lens is really superb! It focuses very fast, is lightweight, and shows great bokeh! It is a real pleasure to work with. I have only been using it for one week, but have been impressed by the quality of the images (I mostly photograph birds). Another winner from Nikon...

This is an amazing lens!!! Fast focusing and light weight, and easy to pack and travel with, no matter how small the plane and limits on your baggage weight when traveling. Short light weight prime lens that is amazingly sharp and fast to focus with my Z9. Hand held without need for tripod. Well built, solid and able to with stand the elements. I have included a hand held photo of a bald eagle from recent trip I hosted. Never leaving home without this lens. Thanks again Nikon and B&H for this lens!!
