Nimble Super-Telephoto
Described as "the smallest and lightest 400mm Nikon has ever created," the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S is a super-telephoto prime mixing unique portability with long reach, advanced optics, and apt AF and VR. It's a well-rounded lens for the traveling sports or wildlife shooter looking for a handheld design and capable reach for photographing distant subjects.
Long Reach, Compact Design
Distinct among super-telephoto lenses, this 400mm f/4.5 is especially sleek and lightweight, making it an ideal companion for travel or other shooting scenarios where handheld shooting is preferred.
  • Sophisticated optical design includes a series of specialized elements that promote a lighter, more compact overall design.
  • Modest f/4.5 maximum aperture offers a practical balance between size, speed, and weight.
  • With a size more akin to a 70-200mm f/2.8, this lens measures just 9.2" long and weighs 2.7 lb. Compared to the Z 400mm f/2.8 lens, this f/4.5 version weighs 3.8 lb less and measures 6" shorter in length.
S-Line Optics
  • Helping to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations, color fringing, and comatic aberrations, this lens features one ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element and two Super ED elements, along with one SR (short-wavelength refractive) element.
  • The SR element features a specialized high-dispersion design that refracts wavelengths shorter than blue; this helps achieve truly accurate color rendering and also aids in making the lens design more compact.
  • Nano Crystal Coat has been applied for well-rounded anti-glare protection at all angles, helping to suppress ghosting, reflections, and flare for higher contrast and more accurate color response when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions.
Autofocus and Vibration Reduction
  • Advanced autofocus system uses stepping motors to deliver quick and accurate focusing performance, along with smooth and quiet AF that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Vibration Reduction image stabilization reduces the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
  • Synchro VR is also supported when paired with compatible cameras featuring sensor-shift VR, which combines in-body VR with optical VR for improved results of up to 6 stops of compensation.
Professional Handling and Construction
  • As part of the lightweight, nimble design, the included tripod foot can easily be removed for a slimmed down design that's ideal for handheld use.
  • Physical design focuses the center of gravity toward the rear of the lens, around the tripod mount, for smoother, more responsive panning when shooting handheld or working atop a tripod or monopod. The tripod mount also rotates for easier switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientations.
  • Intuitive "no-look" control layout puts all of the frequently-used buttons and dials in easy-to-reach locations to prevent the need to move your eye from the viewfinder.
  • Front anti-slip rubber grip for stable handheld use.
  • Separate manual focus ring and a programmable control ring offer distinct levels of tactile control over shooting settings.
  • Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.
  • Weather-sealed design includes rubber gaskets to prevent dust and moisture ingress and the exposed elements have a fluorine coating that repels dirt and oils and is easier to clean.
  • Store a focusing position using the Memory Set button so you can instantly return to this by position by pressing the Fn or Fn2 buttons—perfect for capturing fleeting movements.
  • Two customizable L-Fn buttons can be set to configure subject tracking, AF lock, image playback, or other modes. The L-Fn2 button is also accessible from four different locations on the barrel for easy reach.
  • Focus limiter switch can constrain the focus range to 19.7' to infinity or from the full focusing range of 8.2' to infinity.
  • Programmable Control Ring can also be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
  • Kensington lock support for securing the lens in place during remote shooting sessions.
  • Uses front screw-in 95mm filters.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S Reviews

Exceeded My Expectations

I shoot mostly wildlife, but love photographing landscapes, people and any little insect I find. I was a little apprehensive about how well this lens would work. Mostly because of it not having a faster aperture. My concern was low light performance. My concern is no longer a concern. While not the fastest it is more than acceptable attached to the Z9. My go to lens has been a 600 f4 but I have to tell you, after having this lens for a week and half I am thoroughly impressed. I literally have not used my 600 once since the 400 arrived. A big plus is the weight. So light compared to my other primes. Carrying my camera in the field has just gotten a lot easier. The light weight has helped me get on target quicker and my hit rate has increased. The image quality and auto focus top notch. It seems quicker to focus. I really do not have anything bad to say about the lens. Even the controls are well placed. Well worth every penny.

Most amazing Nikon Telephoto ever!

As a retired photojournalist I have used every lens Nikon ever made (almost) and especially their telephoto lenses. This 400 is the sharpest Nikon telephoto I have ever used. And though I don't need a 600mm or 800mm anymore, this lens is perfect for what I do now--travel and wildlife photography. It is amazingly lightweight. And with VR I am able to hand hold the lens at slow shutter speeds. WOW! Nikon does it again.

Excellent.

Two wonderful and affordable lenses as ways to get to 400mm. Like zooms? Get the 100-400. Like fixed focal length lenses, get this one.

Believe the hype; light weight, high quality

This is yet another lens by Nikon that proves that ultra-high quality doesn't have to mean huge. This lens is lighter than my 300 f/4 D, and only about 1 pound heavier than my 300mm PF. But sharper than either of them. A significant amount of weight is toward the back of the lens, which means I think it would balance better on a smaller body like the Z7 or rumored Z8 than it does on a Z9. That rearward center of mass means that it might be a bit harder to hold steady than you would expect. Nevertheless, at 1/100th or so, most of my shots are keepers due to it's great VR working with the Z9 stabilization. It's got great AF; fast and nearly silent. Reports are it works great with a 1.4 TC, and once I can actually get my hands on one, I'll certainly find out. Some minor drawbacks: While I like the quickly removable tripod foot, I'd like it even better if I could remove the whole collar. Also, the focus ring is so touchy that leaving manual focus override active is almost unusable But I'd consider these fairly minor quibbles compared to the overall performance of this lens. It truly is a nearly perfect lens if size/weight are a high priority without sacrificing image quality and performance, and if you don't need the versatility of a zoom.

Great Lens, Light Weight and easy to handhold and carry.

Have a F Series Nikon 400mm F2.8 VR lens I bought new several years ago. It is still in perfect shape (will be for sale now) and obviously the new S Series 400mm F4.5 is not as MIGHTY, but after about 1 month of use I am quite pleased with how light the new S Series lens is, as well as the photo quality while paired with my Nikon Z cameras. My conclusion is that I will lose a little bokeh of the F series lens at F2.8, but hauling that big setup around will surely minimize the times I go out shooting with it. With the new S series lens, it should be an advantage for me, quality results and ease of use, I'm 66 so less gear/weight is important. And yes, the F series lens works fine with adapter, which adds a little more weight. LOL
