Synology DS1522+ External HDD/SSD Overview

The DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology provides flexible data management for homes and SOHO environments. is designed for small offices and IT enthusiasts. It is easy to scale and expand as your needs change, with optional support for up to 15 drives with two DX517 expansion units, fast networking, and NVMe SSD caching with two M.2 2280 slots. Powered by Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), it offers a flexible all-in-one solution for data sharing, synchronization, backup, and surveillance.

This NAS is equipped with five drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs for data storage. The data stored on this NAS can include videos, music, photos, and documents with up to 2048 user accounts and 2000 maximum concurrent connections. The CPU is a 2.6 GHz AMD Ryzen R1600 Dual-Core that is paired with 8GB of DDR4 RAM, both of which allow frequently used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving sequential read speeds of up to 736 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 796 MB/s.

Also featured are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports and two eSATA ports, and network connectivity is achieved via the four Gigabit Ethernet ports that support Link Aggregation and Failover, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. For those who require RAID support, the DS1522+ supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure keeps cool using dual 92mm fans and operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz. Included is an accessory pack, an AC adapter, an AC power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

The HDS5C4040ALE630 HDDs are not listed as compatible with the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure. I order to migrate your data will need to populate the DS1522+ with drives that are compatible, like the WD 4TB WD40EFPX Red Plus SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (B&H # WEDBC9V004H1, MFR #WDBC9V0040HH1-WRSN) then use the Synology Migration Assistant to migrate your DS1513+ to the DS1522+.

The Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure, (B&H # SYDS1522P), will warn you that the drive is not supported but it would be able to use all 20TB. Keep in mind that this will also depend on your specific RAID configuration if you are mixing drives with different capacities.

Can you move hard drives directly from Drobo? Have a4 2TB drives with lots of data that I cannot loose.

Hard drives cannot be moved directly from one RAID enclosure to another. All data on the array should be backed up to a separate location. The drives can then be formatted (wiped) and, if compatible, installed into the new enclosure. After setup data will have to be transferred to the new array manually.

The Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure, (B&H # SYDS1522P), does not have an option for a 2 port 10GbE network card. You could use the Synology E10G22-T1-Mini RJ45 10G Ethernet Module, (B&H # SYE10G22T1M), along with a 10GbE Ethernet Switch like the QNAP QSW-2104-2T 6-Port 10GbE/2.5GbE Unmanaged Switch, (B&H # QNSW21042TAU).

Hello, under recommending accessories it is mentioned Seagate 16TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR, OEM) for Synology DS1522+ But on the Synology website under HDD compatibility it is mentioned Exos X16 ST16000NM001G for the 16 TB model. Kindly Confirm. ? Thanks

Both of these models will be compatible with the DS1522+. This enclosure can accept most 7200 rpm 3.5" SATA III hard drives, the Seagate IronWolf Pro will be compatible.
