Blackmagic Design ATEM SDI Overview

Designed for multi-camera live streaming to the internet or broadcast applications, the compact ATEM SDI from Blackmagic Design provides gaming consoles, corporate computer streams, or HD cameras a four-input, live-production switcher with an integrated control panel. The four SDI inputs are available on the rear of the chassis and they input up to 1080p60 video. Two 3G-SDI outputs are useful for a projector or external monitor, a USB-C output for streaming up to 1080p60 video to a computer, and an RJ45, 10/100 Ethernet port for system management, remote control, and upgrades.
The control surface features easy-to-view, backlit control buttons to enable selecting camera inputs, controlling transitions, keyers, settings, and the DVE. The ATEM Mini features upstream and downstream keyers, an advanced chroma keyer, two linear/luma keyers, a DVE transition keyer, a pattern generator, and two color generators. There is also media player support for fill and key images, which supports up to 20 stills in PNG, TGA, BMP, JPEG, and TIFF formats. The SDI output supports a minimum of 1366 x 768 resolution for monitoring your stream. It also supports the ATEM Software Control Panel via Ethernet for control and configuration.
Transitions
Available transitions include:
  • Cut: when you press the cut button, ATEM instantly changes from your current program source to the preview source. Cuts can be performed by directly selecting sources or by pressing the cut button to switch to the next source.
  • Mix: the mix, or dissolve, gradually transitions from one source to the next by creating a smooth blend. You can set custom timings to manually blend the transition.
  • Dip: just like mix transitions, a dip transition is a gradual blend that includes either a solid color, graphic, or another clip between the two video sources. Dips to black or white between sources are the most popular, or you can use logos or sponsor graphics.
  • Wipe: built-in wipe patterns include circles, diamonds, squares, and more. Shapes and patterns can be inverted or softened, and can even have customized colored borders.
  • DVE: with the powerful built-in Digital Video Effects processor, or DVE, you can push, spin, squeeze, or swoosh your live video from one camera to the next with incredible built-in transitions. DVE transitions can be flip-flopped and reversed, giving you even more transition options.
Upstream Keyer
Layer live video over other video sources or graphics with the Upstream Keyer. You can use luma key, linear key, pattern key, or shoot against a green screen and use chroma key to instantly composite the video over virtual sets.
  • Luma key: luma keys work best with high-contrast images, like white elements on a black background, so you can use the contrast to cut the black background and replace it with live video or graphics.
  • Linear key: get clean, high-quality results with linear keying by using two separate sources for the fill and the key to create one video image. The fill signal contains the video to be stacked over the background, while the key signal contains a gray scale mask to cut out, or mask, the area to be filled.
  • Chroma key: used every day for TV weather forecasts, chroma keys are a powerful way of combining live images in real time. The presenter typically stands in front of a green or blue background and the chroma keyer will remove only that color and combine it with another image, such as a video or graphic.
  • Pattern key: combine live images with any of the built-in wipe patterns to combine live images or graphics with geometric shapes. You get full control over softness, symmetry, size, and position to create unique picture-in-picture effects that can be transitioned to as easily as any live source.
Downstream Keyers
The ATEM SDI switcher includes one downstream keyer, so you can add high-quality graphics like logos, bugs, and titles from the built-in media player over the live stream program output. Downstream keyers are the last layers of keying, so they overlay all video switched to the main program output.
Audio Mixer
The built-in audio mixer lets you control both camera and external audio with precision level and balance adjustments on all six available audio inputs and two channels. The mixer features selectable On/Off/Audio-Follow-Video per channel, plus it has separate gain control per channel, level and peak metering, and new Fairlight audio enhancements such as compressor, gate, limiter, six bands of parametric EQ, and master gain control.
Media Player
Eliminate external character generators by storing up to 20 broadcast-quality RGBA graphic files in the media pool. The one media player appears as input sources to your switcher. You can transition to graphics as full-frame video or feed them to the keyers for overlaying video. Popular image formats such as PNG, TGA, BMP, GIF, JPEG, and TIFF are supported.

Blackmagic Design ATEM SDI Reviews

Neat Little Device

It does what they say it does. Neat little device for BASIC video switching. NOTE, if you need program multi-view output, this is not for you. Only two outputs can be assigned at any point and will go to separate screens. For Multiview try the Pro version.

No Multiview!?!

I've been doing professional A/V work for several years. I bought this switcher to go with the compact live-streaming rig I'm building. Paired it with the BMD Web Presenter HD and BMD SmartDuo screen. Specifically chose the SmartDuo so I could put my switcher's multi-view on the left screen and my program out on the right screen. I installed everything in a portable 6U rack (as well as a Furman power conditioner), wired everything, then flipped the switch. No multi-view. I checked my wiring. All good. I plugged my computer into the screens to make sure I wasn't missing a settings option. All good. Plugged my computer into the switcher: Strange! I thought. Why can't I find the multi-view options? Finally checked the forums... The BMD Atem SDI switcher does NOT have multi-view functionality. Yes, this switcher does not have what I, and many others, had always assumed was a basic function of a video switcher. Silly us, it's only in every switcher that's ever been made. I'm fine if they want to go and make a switcher without multi-view, but what really annoys me is that they don't mention that fact upfront. It's like making a video camera without a screen or viewfinder (which BMD does make), but not making it clear in the text or images that the camera doesn't have what most would assume is a basic part of a video camera. So, I'm going to try and return the switcher. But if I now upgrade to the ATEM SDI Pro Iso (which has multi-view), I no longer need the BMD WebPresenter, which means I no longer need my rack or any of the parts I put into it. Maybe that'll be a savings, but I've already put in all the work of setting everything up. Plus, I already threw out the boxes (I can't stand box hoarding, but I guess from now on I'll at least keep them for a month), so I'll have to see if the other stores I bought those items from will even allow me to return them. So any savings might disappear if I'm unable to return some items. Overall, a really big headache caused by BMD's lack of transparency about the capabilities of this product. I normally love their gear, but this time I'm annoyed.

Yes, the Blackmagic Design ATEM SDI Switcher will allow you to control the Black Magic URSA Broadcast. Please note for control you would need to use two (2) SDI ports on the Atem Mini SDI, and be running the Atem Desktop software on a connected computer.

Will the output on this be similar to the standard ATEM Mini, or have the ability like the Mini Pro to show all 4 video inputs on the output?
Asked by: Keith
The Blackmagic Design ATEM mini SDI Switcher does not offer Multiview output, unfortunately. However, the ATEM Mini Pro ISO SDI would include Multiview output. We recommend moving up to the Blackmagic Design ATEM SDI Pro ISO Switcher, B&H # BLSWATEMSDIP, which will include ISO recoding for each SDI input and output, and Multiview, which will show all the SDI inputs on one screen. Also, to use the ISO recording features, just connect an approved USB-C SSD for recording. See: Approved media for ISO recording - Samsung 2TB T7 Shield Portable SSD (Black), B&H # SAMUPE2T0SAM.
