Venus Optics Laowa 10mm f/4 Reviews

Difficult to accurately focus

I got this lens for use on both my Sony a6000 (converted to IR) and my a6500. I was attracted to the small size of the lens. The info that came with the lens recommended use of the focus assist feature of the camera body. When using this feature, an enlarged center area is displayed allowing for accurate manual focus. While this feature works fine with my Sony lenses, it does not work with the Laowa lens. I have no way to accurately focus the lens. This is an issue even at infinity focus and f/4 as the markings on the lens ring are not accurate. Granted, I can select f/8 and not worry about the accuracy of the focus ring. The vignetting that the lens has is acceptable (to me) when using it on the a6500 camera but becomes unacceptable when used on the camera modified for IR. In hindsight, I should have resisted the great deal offered and put my money into the purchase of the new Sony 10 - 20mm G lens. Its auto everything and only about 2 ounces more weight. Is it too late to return the Laowa lens?

Tiny, solid, and crisp!

Researched this lens for a while before I decided to pull the trigger. I'm very glad I did. It's built very well, with no defects or issues out of the box. I don't usually shoot in in-climate weather, so weatherproofing isn't vital to me. It is a moody lens with a great deal of vignetting. I like that look and can find a million ways to be creative using it, so it's nice I don't have to deal with that too often in correcting it. It's super crispy and definitely looks great on all of my Fuji X-mount cameras. I especially like the look, feel, and image capture of the X-Pro 3 paired with this little lens. It's not a super easy lens to just pull out and shoot with, but it is a super clear and lightweight lens to use when you are feeling creative with your photography.

Impressive for its size

Keep in mind you're getting this lens because it's a pancake, not because it's the best 10mm out there. This perfectly filled the need I had for an ultra-wide lens easy to pocket while hiking. 3D pop is good, colors are very saturated, makes nice sun stars, and is sufficiently sharp. It has extreme vignetting at every aperture, but that's the price you pay for the size. It's a quick fix in any decent editing software. Bonus points to Laowa for offering it in silver too.

Wide, sharp & inexpensive

I had the Fuji 10-24, a great lens but a little bulky for travel. I learned of this Laowa 10mm pancake and my past experience with their lenses being positive, along with the modest price, was reason enough to buy it. I have not been disappointed. Yes, it is fully manual, no chip so no exif data, but it is solidly built and performs beautifully for the investment. Aperture ring is smooth, as is focus, and aside from the usual vignetting at maximum aperture, which disappears about f/8, there are really no issues. The interior photo attached had a couple of adjustments for exposure and alignment, but nothing else. At 10MM, properly positioned, there is no barrel distortion at all. The second shot of the Erie sculpture was taken at about one foot away. The sharpness over the whole photograph is impressive as well. Why 4 stars? The lens is only an inch thick, hence the pancake designation. I would have liked the focus ring to be a quarter inch thicker for a better grip.

Affordable & Extremely Compact

The Laowa 10mm F4 is a great little lens. Well built, pretty sharp, very well corrected for distortion, and impressively tiny. You could complain about the rather pronounced vignetting at wide apertures, or the lack of critical sharpness in the extreme corners, these are real issues. Or you could marvel at how absolutely tiny this lens is, how little distortion it has, how well built it is, how useful for creative composition it's close focus capabilities are, and how you didn't have to spend a lot of money to get such a handy ultra-wide on your APSc camera (Fuji-X in my case). A great tool that's easy to keep with you at all times and easy to appreciate despite its minor failings.

So... What is the potential vignetting on a full-frame Canon R like the R6M2? What does the image look like?
Asked by: william
The Venus Optics Laowa 10mm f/4 Cookie Lens for Canon RF (Black) will create an image that is black all around and only the center has the photo if you have the camera in full frame mode. If you set the camera to apsc crop mode the image will fill the whole frame but less than half of the available megapixels will be used.
