The Sony XPERIA 5 IV Dual-SIM 128GB 5G Smartphone adds desired features from the last generation, while expanding on what made the XPERIA 5 III popular. With the XPERIA 5 IV, you will enjoy a 6.1" FHD+ 120 Hz OLED display that's 50% brighter than the previous generation and the ability to recharge wirelessly. On the audio side, Music Pro support lets audio pros record tracks on the go. With these and other new capabilities, Sony continues to prove that access to professional content creation is possible in a compact and mobile design.

Rear Camera System
Like the previous generation, the XPERIA 5 IV features a triple 12MP rear camera system with 16mm ultra-wide, 24mm wide, and 60mm telephoto lenses. These lenses are all equipped with the ability to record 120 fps slow-motion video at up to 4K resolution. All of the lenses are also capable of the following:
  • Real-time Eye AF
  • Real-time object tracking
  • 20 fps AF/AE burst photography with HDR
  • Object tracking and Eye AF in video
  • Wide dynamic range
  • Live streaming

Expanding on the above features, real-time object tracking uses AI to follow and focus on a subject and will keep tracking it, even if it temporarily moves out of sight. Burst photography rapidly grabs multiple images of a moment, so you can pick the best expression and composition. Also, when live streaming, you can do this directly from the XPERIA 5 IV using Videography Pro, or from your Alpha camera when using the XPERIA 5 IV as an external monitor.
High-End Audio
The audio on the XPERIA 5 IV has been tuned in collaboration with Sony Music and uses a host of technologies to deliver high-end mobile sound. When using a wired or wireless pair of headphones, you an experience Hi-Res Audio transmission, or you can choose to experience music in a more immersive sound space with 360 Reality Audio. Other acoustic features include DSEE Ultimate upmixing, Dolby Atmos support for more cinematic mobile streaming, and Music Pro support for high-end mobile recording.

  • 360 Reality Audio: 360 Reality Audio completely immerses you in your music, making you feel like you're in the room with the artist. Tracks can be found on Tidal, Amazon Music, and other streaming services, but you can also upscale your favorite stereo tracks in real time with 360 Reality Audio Upmix.
  • Music Pro: Music Pro utilizes cloud processing on your tracks to make it sound like they were recorded in a studio using a condenser microphone. With the phone, you get the first month of this subscription service for free with up to 100MB of processing to try it out.
  • DSEE Ultimate: Utilizing DSEE Ultimate, AI can upscale your lower resolution audio to close to high resolution levels for a more enjoyable experience.
Elite Mobile Gaming
Gamers and game streamers don't have to suffer when away from their consoles and PCs. Both will enjoy the ability to stream games with PS Remote Play, or play on the phone with smooth gameplay at 120 Hz, fast 240 Hz motion blur reduction, and a responsive 240 Hz touch scanning rate. The XPERIA 5 IV also offers low gamma raiser, audio equalizer, and voice chat optimization to complete the experience. Streamers will benefit from additional features catering to their platform, such as 120 Hz R.T. recording, an audio mixer, voice changer, and screen burst.

I switched from a OnePlus 10 Pro to this device (I was impacted by the storage bug). With that in mind the first thing I noticed was this phone felt small, I could reach across the entire width without issue using on hand. I'm using it without a case and the flat screen + beveled sides make this feel really nice. I was somewhat nervous about the heating issues some reviews and users mentioned, but outside of knowing that this could run hot it seems like a lot of those reports are for specific use cases (and everyone's setup is unique). With that in mind I've had no heat warnings, and outside of first setup I've only noticed the device getting warm enough to take notice once - there was a rogue app running in the background that was stuck and a restart resolved it. Jumping back to coming from a OnePlus 10 Pro for a minute, the software experience on the Xperia really feels bare bones. There is a noticeable lack in customization. An example would be the vibration motor, which is definitely stronger than the one from the 10 Pro but isn't as tight feeling and has no way by default to change the length/pattern. The camera is taking some getting used to, but I really began to appreciate how similar it is to my point and shoot regarding color accuracy and options available. Video has been smooth, and I love being able to control the audio level (though it was easier to do on the LG G8 and LG V60). Battery life sees me through a day easily, ymmv depending on the setup but this can be a two day phone for me if I wanted it to be. I've left the 120hz enabled for what it's worth. I've watched some media on the phone, and it's really nice when the content fills the screen - no complaints about that being 1080p, and the sound experience has been great (speakers, Bluetooth audio and headphone jack). Flashlight is just a dim as the complaints from past Sony phones, and for some reason after startup my device didn't have a Calculator app installed by default. Overall I'd like more customization options and not as bare bones of an experience (more software updates being promised would be great too). No other issues for me so far, if you're curious about the phone it may be a sign it's for you.

lovin'it!

Best Compact smartphone

This isn't a definitive smartphone review, there are far more qualified people on YouTube and the like that have covered this phone ad nauseam. For a simple consumer though that doesn't game on his phone, and one that's coming from a smartphone camera that was the Razer Phone 2 (which was objectively a bad camera) this phone is an improvement in every sense of the word. Much smaller, better battery life, faster. Everything I'm saying is objective, if you're coming from the Xperia 5 III, it may not feel like much of an upgrade, but if your phone is older, and your looking for a phone that actually fits in your pocket, maybe you're looking for a phone that isn't made by Samsung or Apple, this phone gets a lot right. It incredibly has an Aux port for wired headphones, wireless charging, a MicroSD card slot. To me, this phone checks off more boxes that most other new phones available. If you can stomach the $998 price tag of course. I mean, it's cheaper than the Xperia 1 IV. If the price turns you off, The Pixel 7/7 Pro exist, though the 7 Pro isn't small, and the Asus Zenfone 9 is great, but the plastic back doesn't evoke flagship to me. Point is, this phone checks off too many boxes to ignore.

First Sony Phone

Very impressed in built quality. Software is almost stock Android. Cameras are impressive. Heat issues I only experienced one time so far and that was when downloading applications at the beginning of setup. Battery is superior among others, lasted a day and a half on one occasion. Sound quality exceptional. Call quality excellent on AT&T. Thinking about buying a 2nd one. The screen ratio and fit in hand got me. Goodbye Apple and Samsung, we had a good 14 year run.

Great phone, but no WiFi calls

I have to say the build and quality of this phone is great. Overall, it really is a great phone with minor issues. However there is one big issue that keeps this from being my favorite phone... There is no WiFi calling capabilities built into this phone. So all calls are reliant on your mobile coverage. This is a huge issue for me because I live in a rural area and when at home I can only use calling on WiFi. I have called Sony and they stated they don't include the option for WiFi calling on there phones anymore since 2019. They stated it's up to the mobile carrier to allow WiFi calling. I have Verizon and they have always provided me with WiFi calling. After troubleshooting with them and confirming I have WiFi calling enabled it was determined I'm unable to use WiFi calling on this phone because there is no option included on the phone itself to enable the feature. I love Sony products, but this was a huge bummer.
