I am getting ready to purchase this lens or the 80mm f1.9. I am hesitating. I have heard many great reviews of the 80mm?
Asked by: Dennis
I have made it a practice of renting the X series lenses for extended testing prior to final selection / purchase. The 80 f1.9 was HEAVY. This lens has not been available for image quality comparison but on paper is half the weight. After a 10 day rental period of shooting with the 80 1.9 daily, I decided to wait for this lens just for that factor alone, although the marketing literature does indicate this lens will have faster autofocus on the X2D body , which is a planned upgrade; I currently shoot with a 907x. Additionally I like the availability of the old fashioned depth of field indicator and the manual focus clutch as most of the time I do not bother with Autofocus with the 907x - it’s not fast and even with the lens speed, not that accurate with the 80 f1.9. Finally, if shooting wide open to take advantage of the f1.9 aperture, depth of field with the 1.9 is actually too shallow at portrait distance IMO. Like, if the eyes are in focus straight on, the tip of the nose is soft. it’s about right once I stop down to f2.8…so this lens seems like a better choice to me.

Is the manual focus focus-by-wire?

The Hasselblad XCD 90mm f/2.5 V Lens would have mechanically coupled manual focus when the focus ring clutch is in the manual focus setting.
