The Canon XA70 Professional UHD 4K Camcorder is a compact, lightweight camera featuring UHD 4K capture, a 1" CMOS sensor, two XLR audio inputs, and one mini-HDMI output which fits right into the ENG category for documentary or journalism-style productions. Updated from its XA55 predecessor, this model features a larger 3.5mm LCD capacitive touchscreen display, a higher resolution tiltable 0.36" OLED EVF, OSD metadata recording, and fast USB Type-C video-only output with UVC support for livestreaming to a computer.

The lens optics include an integrated 15x HD optical zoom, a nine-bladed circular iris for more natural highlights, and wide DR gamma support for low-light recording. The camera's pro-style features include Dual-Pixel and Contrast autofocus, fast- and slow-motion recording, full manual control, optical and electronic image stabilization, a 3.5" touchscreen LCD, user-assignable buttons, infrared mode, and a DIG!C DV 6 image processor with high sensitivity and low noise. The XA70 also has display monitoring features such as zebra, color bars, and test tone, plus a built-in neutral density filter mechanism.

The camera records UHD 4K30 and Full HD 1080p60 captured to dual SD card slots in XF-AVC and MP4 formats, and it outputs to a mini-HDMI port. The dual SD card slots allow for automatic switching from one card to another, as well as simultaneous recording to both. The camera can output up to 1920 x 1080p 10-bit 4:2:2 video at 59.94 fps via its mini-HDMI output. On the audio side, the XA70 features up to four channels of LPCM audio with manual/automatic recording levels, two XLR inputs with phantom power, and a 3.5mm stereo mini input. It features a built-in stereo microphone as well as a headphone jack and a 2.5mm LANC input for control.

Compact Professional UHD 4K Camcorder
The XA70 captures sharp UHD images thanks to a 1" CMOS 4K sensor and DIGIC DV6 image processor. Oversampled HD delivers Full HD images from the 4K sensor.
On-Screen Display (OSD) "Time Stamp" Recording
OSD recording embeds date, time, timecode, and other data into your original camera files, effectively "time stamping" the information into each frame of video, a requirement for legal and law enforcement videographers.
UVC Livestreaming
Stream HD video directly from the camera via UVC1 to a Windows or macOS computer. Audio output through USB is not supported.
4K 15x Optical Zoom Lens
Adjustable focusing speeds and advanced Dual-Pixel CMOS AF give fast and precise focusing. Use the ultrabright 3.5" LCD to set focus by touching the AF point required. Face Detection AF and Face Tracking are available, while Manual Focus is set via the focus/zoom ring.
XF-AVC and MP4 for Flexible Recording
Choose from XF-AVC or MP4 recording formats. Record XF-AVC UHD 4K 160 Mb/s at 30P and Full HD 45 Mb/s at 60p/60i and 30/24p. For smaller files, record MP4 in 4K 150 Mb/s at 30/24p and Full HD 35 Mb/s or 17 Mb/s at 60/30/24p.
Professional Input and Output
Output options include HDMI, simultaneous backup and relay recording via dual SD cards, and Infrared mode. Record 5x slow motion in Full HD or Fast Motion in 4K/Full HD up to 1200x. Color match with other Canon cameras using the custom picture menu.
Professional Audio Options
Two XLR terminals on a detachable handle plus 4-channel linear PCM bring pro audio options.

Does this camera possess the ability to record in infrared? And if so, can you record say 1080p60 with it in that mode? Thanks
Asked by: Jephthah
Yes, the Canon XA70 does have low light and IR night recording modes. Canon's IR mode will allow you to record in darkness using infrared recording, and the built-in infrared light on the handle unit, you can record nocturnal animals in their natural environment or other such scenes. What is the difference between the XA60 and the XA70?
Asked by: Sajata
Although both cameras are similar in many aspects, such as internal recording, the Canon XA60 Professional UHD 4K Camcorder provides a 1/2.3" CMOS Sensor. In contrast, the Canon XA70 UHD 4K30 Camcorder with Dual-Pixel Autofocus provides a larger 1" CMOS Sensor. The larger sensor offers improved low light and shallow depth of field behind a subject. The Canon XA60 Professional UHD 4K Camcorder also provides a longer optical zoom reach of 20x and does not offer an internal neutral density filter wheel. The Canon XA70 UHD 4K30 Camcorder with Dual-Pixel Autofocus provides a shorter optical zoom reach of 15x and does offer an internal neutral density filter wheel.

Will the XA70 add the ability to use the LCD screen and the viewfinder simultaneously, unlike previous models?
Asked by: Paul
The Canon XA70 UHD 4K30 Camcorder with Dual-Pixel Autofocus (B&H# CAXA70) will not simultaneously display an image in its LCD screen and its viewfinder. However, a new feature on this model (relative to the previous generation of similar Canon camcorders) is its 3.5" ultrabright LCD screen which is now both large enough and bright enough to allow for more than one person to monitor the recording at once.
