FUJIFILM X-H2: Life in Detail
Pushing the boundaries of APS-C imaging, the FUJIFILM X-H2 is a high-resolution mirrorless crop-sensor camera featuring a groundbreaking 40MP BSI sensor and an arsenal of cutting-edge features packed into a small and durable X-series body. Standing atop the X-System lineup, this high performing camera inherits many of the GFX system's advances in digital capture technology to provide image quality, detail, and color rendition never before seen in a crop-sensor camera, while retaining its characteristic compact form factor and sleek design that has garnered the X-System a loyal following worldwide.
Backside-Illuminated Sensor and 64-Bit Processing
X-Trans 5 BSI Sensor
Ideal for architectural, travel, and landscape photographers, the X-H2 sports a backside-illuminated, APS-C-format 40MP X-Trans 5 HR sensor, which ups the resolution and improves low-light performance compared to previous generations. First, as an X-Trans sensor, it uses the unique color filter array that inherently minimizes moiré and contributes to more natural color rendering; next, the BSI design helps reduce noise and improve tonality and clarity; and, finally, the design greatly reduces rolling shutter and other motion distortion to better suit high-speed video and photo applications. The remarkable resolution allows for 2x digital zoom and has up to 13 stops of dynamic range.
X-Processor 5
Partner to the newly designed sensor is a fresh engine—the X-Processor 5—which uses 64-bit processing to realize 3x faster speeds for both video and photo tasks compared to the X-T4. On the video side, this enables recording at bit rates of up to 720 mb/s.

On the stills end, this quick processing means faster shooting to suit photographing moving subjects. When working with an electronic shutter, shooting at up to 20 fps is possible, with a buffer of 202 consecutive uncompressed raw frames. With the mechanical shutter, shooting speeds of up to 15 fps are possible, along with the ability to shoot upwards of 1000 raw frames in a single burst.

Benefitting both video and stills applications, this processing also benefits the sophisticated and AI-backed autofocus system, helps achieve a 14-stop dynamic range, and enables an enhanced sensitivity range from ISO 125-12800.

Powerful Video Capabilities
4K 60p and 8K 30p Internal Recording
Despite its focus on photography, the X-H2 has an impressive video system capable of 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording in 8K at 30fps and in both DCI/UHD 4K at up to 60 fps and Full HD at up to 240p. A variety of codecs are supported as well, including H.265 and three tiers of ProRes: the high bitrate 422 HQ, the standard 422, and the more compressed 422 LT. Also, continuous recording times up to 160 minutes are possible at all frame rates and resolutions and can be extended to 240 minutes with the external clip-on fan.
External Raw Recording
Using the full-size HDMI port, 12-bit raw video recording is possible when paired with a compatible external recorder. Both ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW recording is possible, along with the ability to work with F-Log or F-Log 2 profiles, and either format supports working in resolutions up to the open-gate 8K.
Improved Autofocus and Image Stabilization
Hybrid AF with Deep Learning AI
Benefitted by the improved processing, autofocus performance is noticeably faster and more intelligent. This hybrid focusing system uses 425 phase-detection points and is now sensitive down to -7 EV for working in truly low-light conditions. Also, backed by deep learning, an AI adaptive algorithm means this focusing system is better suited to automatically detect and track a variety of subject types.
Pixel Shift Multishot
Pixel Shift Multishot takes multiple exposures in rapid succession, each one precisely shifting the image sensor by half a pixel, capturing the subject on a different part of the image sensor each time and yielding a single 160-Megapixel image with the help of the Pixel Shift Combiner software.
In-Body Image Stabilization
Built-in 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 7 stops. This system works in conjunction with most X Series lenses, including non-stabilized ones, and benefits working with slower shutter speeds and when shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, digital image stabilization can also be used during video recording to further aid in steadying footage, especially when recording handheld.
Body Design
Practical and Durable Design
  • Large OLED electronic viewfinder features a crisp 5.76m-dot resolution and a 0.8x magnification for bright, clear, and detailed eye-level viewing.
  • Rear 3.0" LCD has a high 1.62m-dot resolution and a touchscreen interface for intuitive control. Also, its vari-angle design means the screen can be flipped out to the side, tilted up or down, and closed with the screen against the body for protection.
  • 1.28" monochrome LCD screen on the top plate is a simple means for quickly reviewing shooting settings.
  • Dual memory card slots include one CFexpress Type B slot and one SD UHS-II slot for file-saving flexibility. The CFexpress Type B slot should be prioritized for higher bitrate video recording and fast continuous shooting, and the SD slot is a convenient alternative for backups or less speed-critical shooting.
  • NP-W235 battery provides approximately 720 frames per charge when working with the EVF in Economy Mode, or approximately 580 frames in Normal Mode.
Connectivity
  • Full-size HDMI Type A port for outputting video to an external recorder or monitor.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port supports tethering, data transfer, and in-camera battery charging.
  • 3.5mm headphone and external microphone ports for greater control over audio recording.
  • PC sync port for flash sync.
  • 2.5mm remote port for using wired remote controllers.
  • Integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wirelessly sharing images to a mobile device or to use the device to remotely control the camera.
Film Simulation Modes
Film Simulation modes allow you to reproduce the look and feel of several of FUJIFILM's film types, including Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Classic Neg., Nostalgic Neg., Pro Neg. Hi, Pro Neg. Standard, Eterna, Eterna Bleach Bypass, Acros, Monochrome, and Sepia. Additionally, Grain Effect can be adjusted as well as Color Chrome effect to fine-tune the look of imagery.

FUJIFILM X-H2 Reviews

More than pleased with camera's performance

By Nancy L.

As an owner of the Fujifilm X-T2, this was a big upgrade both in focus and image resolution. The camera's IBIS is a huge boom in performance for a person that has a slight sway when taking pictures without a tripod. The ability to really push higher ISO makes more image captures possible without the use of any tripod. I just recently used this camera in Alaska on multiple whale excursions and it locked focus SO FAST. While the X-H2 doesn't have the dials as the X-T2, I had no problem transitioning to this camera. IMHO it actually made camera adjustments quicker when taking action photos since I wasn't needing to lower my camera to look at the dial as on the X-T2. Dials/buttons well laid out on the X-H2. Easy to customize dials/buttons if you wish. Really enjoy using this professional camera. Without a doubt I would purchase again.

Amazing Camera

This is an amazing camera. My first introduction to the Fuji system was the XT-2. I enjoyed using that camera though it was a little small for my hands. After years of my faithful XT-2, I recently upgraded to the XH-2 with the 16-80 mm lens. Oh boy, this is a beauty! The ergonomics is very good. Last Saturday I did my first wedding and it performed excellently. Love the quality of the photos.

Long Term Review

Ergonomics: I have read many complaints about the ergonomics versus the dial system, and I do not fully understand the negative reviews. If you want to see how bad PASM can be, try the older Sony A7's for heavens sake. There is no problem here. The controls and functions are well laid out and intuitive to pick up. Coming from the X-T3 and from having other cameras like the D500, I found no quirks that felt like a nuisance. I sold all my Sony gear and have not looked back for this reason. Fuji and Nikon do the PASM control system much better for my preferences. Speaking of preferences: the grip on the XT's are just too small for my hands. I am an even 6' and pretty normal handsize for the height, I suppose. Before buying the X-H2 I held out a little bit to get the details on what the grip for the XT-5 might be like. That helped to sell me on the X-H2: no need for a batter grip here. The grip on the X-H2 is perfect for me. I am never distracted to paying attention to what kind of grip my hands have on it. The battery grip never leaves my X-T3. IQ: The image quality is predictably Fuji and I do enjoy the higher resolution. It helps in those occasions I actually do need to crop and for my older eyes, the detail is wonderful to see. I love the definition. I will post a couple of pics here, but I have others on Flickr. You can search the user Trezo Je and check that out if you like. The most recent photos are X-H2 and you can open them up wide on your computer screen. I shoot almost exclusively with the XF 16-55 2.8 and all the pictures I have posted thus far where using that lens. Final Impression: I am very happy with the X-H2 and have no need or desire to pickup an XT-5 to complement my camera bag.

Better than my XT-4...

...which I loved.. The larger grip fits my normal-sized hand better than that of the XT-4's extended grip, higher REZ is satisfying, and overall, it's an excellent camera.

Amazing camera

I shot with aps-c cameras the first 10+ years in photography. Over those years I constantly heard that you had to move up to full frame if you wanted amazing images. All the talk and hype around full frame pushed me into going that route. Shooting full frame, I learned a thing or two and at the same time started to lose my passion for photography, until I decided to purchase the X-H2. The X-H2 is an amazing camera, that does well in all categories for me. I love the form factor of it, as I have always been accustomed to this style of body. I own and shoot Nikon, Sony and Canon mirrorless bodies, so this body just felt natural to me. It is amazingly comfortable and the button placement is perfect. I have been mostly using the X-H2 for portraits. When paired with the right lenses, it is almost impossible to tell the difference between this and any of my full frame bodies. The color science is just beautiful and the film simulations gives me a new aspect to my creativity. The RAW files are a dream to work with. 40 MP makes for the perfect image size to retouch and crop without losing too much in the process. The video options are great. 8k at this price, how could you pass on that? I have seen many YouTubers complain about the rolling shutter on this camera, but there will never be any scenarios that would require me to film while panning the camera back and forth like a mad man. The high bitrate modes and various codecs can accommodate everyone's taste and preferences. The video quality I have been getting out of the various modes has been astonishing and even rivals my full frame bodies. There are so many things to say great about this camera but for sake of time I will sum it all up with the fact that since purchasing the X-H2, I have fallen back in love with photography and have been enjoying every moment this camera is in my hands.

Great camera for photo & video

The Fujifilm X-H2 is a versatile workhouse. I use mine primarily for photography, but it also works great for video. My Atomos Ninja V pairs well for external video recirding. The 40MP sensor on this camera means you have lots of leeway to crop and adjust your shots. All-around this camera is a winner!

Nice Upgrade to Fuji Line-up

By Gerald

The reason I purchased an X-H2 was I wanted to try a camera with a more pronounced grip than the X-T series. Coming from an X-T3, an X-T4, and then an X-T5, at first I wasn't the most thrilled with the lack of dials on top of the camera, but I wanted to give a try. The way I end up using the mode dial on the X-H2 is to use it to set my primary film simulations (using C1 through C7), very much like using the Q button to go between setups with the X-T cameras. In this regard, there is one advantage to the X-H2 over the X-T cameras; the X-H2 will save ISO and exposure compensation settings for each unique film simulation (C1 through C7), whereas on the X-T cameras the user needs to remember to adjust ISO and exp comp for each film sim. It's a minor benefit, but one I have not seen mentioned relative to film simulations. In the end both the X-H2 and X-T5 are phenomenal cameras. I have both, and I have zero plans to upgrade to anything else anytime soon. One other thing to note is that both of these cameras challenge the lenses that are on these 40MP cameras. The new Fuji R LM WR f/1.4 lenses (& new 56mm f/1.2 R WR) are the only lenses I have that can keep up with these cameras. Supposedly the Viltrox 75mm Pro f/1.2 AF is another prime lens to consider. To get the best image quality with both of these 40MP cameras requires better glass (and typically larger, heavier, and more expensive) than we need for our 26MP Fuji cameras.
