Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M (2022 Version) Overview

One of the most versatile lenses for M-mount rangefinders, the upgraded 2022 version of the Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. is a general wide-angle lens characterized by its sophisticated optics and bright f/1.4 maximum aperture. Offered here in black, this lens is well-suited for available light photography and affords outstanding control over depth of field for selective focus shooting techniques.

The lens features a newly engineered double cam unit that decreases the minimum focusing distance to just 1.3', enabling dynamic close-up imagery. Additionally, the lens has been upgraded with eleven aperture blades from the original nine for visibly improved bokeh performance. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element to control spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and clarity, and a floating elements system is used to maintain performance throughout the focusing range. A newly designed pull-out lens hood has also been integrated into the front of the lens to minimize ghosting and flare by blocking out stray light.

Versatile general wide-angle prime features a bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture to benefit working in low-light conditions and for greater control over depth of field.
Improved minimum focusing distance of just 1.3' enables dynamic close-up imagery.
One aspherical element controls spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness.
Floating elements system achieves consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.
Upgraded eleven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
Newly designed with an integrated pull-out lens hood, the front of the lens also includes 46mm-diameter threads to accept optional filters.

will the closer focus diatance work on film cameras?
Asked by: miguel
Contrary to what the Leica and B&H reps write here, the close focus does NOT work on film rangefinders. Minimum focus for these is 70cm, just like many M lenses. From Leica's own site: "For distances down to 70 cm, focus is determined controlled as usual via the rangefinder for all digital and analog M-cameras. Then, after subtle resistance in the dial, the extended close-up range between 70 and 40 cm can be precisely focused via live view on the screen, the Visoflex clip-on viewfinder, or the Leica FOTOS App."

The new Leica 35mm F/1.4 Summilux-M has optical ...

The new Leica 35mm F/1.4 Summilux-M has optical connectors and the M 11 cannot read those and cannot determine what lens is attached. How will this be addressed?
Asked by: Jay
The M11 should know and confirm that this new Leica 35mm lens is attached to the camera via its 6-bit coding. You want to make sure the lens is fully mounted (hearing the slight click) when it's attached. To confirm there is nothing out of the ordinary, you can try the lens on another M digital body to see if the lens gets read by the camera and/or try another M lens on your M11 to see if there are any issues with the camera itself. There are no known issues that we have heard with the 6-bit coding of this lens at this time. If you do the above and find there is an issue/defect with either the lens or the body, please advise B&H you would like return the defected item to them and they will advise the procedure, as long as it is within their return policy window. If it's out of their return window (for the camera), it may need to be sent to Leica's Customer Care dept. in Teaneck NJ to be check out.
