Olight Sigurd Reviews

Excellent WML Concept!

WML's can be problematic with regard to both mounting location and ease of activation (ask me how I know). With location, you don't want a WML prone to snagging and you want the least intrusive barrel shadow. With activation, a WML should be easy to activate w/o excessive hand/finger movement yet not be prone to accidental activation. The new Olight Sigurd does an excellent (but not perfect) job of resolving both these common issues. Location under the barrel places the barrel shadow at 12 o'clock, and even that shadow is minimal, especially if the Sigurd is placed forward as much as possible. This means you have good illumination to both sides as well as top/bottom. The Sigurd itself has a decent throw w/good spill so peripheral awareness is maintained. My own tests show good throw at the 1,435 lumen high out to at least 100yds (farthest I've tested). The low 290 lumen setting can easily detect movement at 100yds but lacks definition & clarity at that distance. The Sigurd mounts easily on any Picatinny rail, but at least 3 of rail is suggested by Olight for secure attachment. There are ambidextrous activation switches on both sides of the Sigurd which accommodate different grips plus metal tabs directly aboves the switches to prevent accidental activation and a tactile marker of the switch location. Switch use is pretty straightforward; a quick push is constant-on while a held push is momentary-on. A quick double-push changes modes between high & low. I find I can easily use the thumb of my support hand to activate the switch w/o shifting my hand on the Sigurd. I believe making the switch a little longer would accommodate more different hand/finger sizes. The max 1,435 lumens will only run constantly for appx 2 minutes before stepping down to 480 lumens for appx 2 hrs. I don't find this a problem as I don't expect to be running the Sigurd constant-on for any significant length of time. Besides, turn the light off momentarily allows you to resume at 1,435 lumens again. The 290 lumen low setting (appx 4hr runtime) seems best suited for close work like inside a home where the 1,435 lumen high setting would likely be too bright and counterproductive. I wasn't sure I would like the rechargeable (and non-replaceable) internal battery, but the Lithium-Polymer batter is good for at least 200-300 recharges, think how much 200-300 replacement CR123's would run by comparison? I found the sides of the Sigurd a little slick for my taste despite the factory grooves, but a little Talon Tape added to the sides solved that easily. I've used many different Surefire/Streamlight/Fenix/etc lights over the years and find myself impressed by this Olight offering. It offers very good light/battery performance in a lightweight & slick package that also doubles as an angled foregrip. I like the Sigurd so well it's now on all my rifles.
