Radial Engineering Reamp HP Overview

Built to make reamping less of a headache in small-format and home studios, the Reamp HP Compact Reamper from Radial Engineering is a convenient little box that eliminates the need to re-patch cables or power-down gear when you have limited outputs on your audio interfaces. Designed to take signals from your interface's oft-available headphone output, this device features a 1/4" TRS stereo input for interfaces or mixers, a 3.5mm TRS stereo input for easy connection to mobile devices, and a single high-impedance mono output, making it simple to take your tracks or even whole songs, and experiment with new sounds by passing them through your pedals and amps for re-recording.

The box comes with an isolated transformer for silent pass-through, and a ground-lift switch for quashing any remaining hum or buzz that might occur. The mono switch makes it easy to sum your stereo signal in preparation for your mono amp, and with a completely passive design, the Reamp HP is ready to go anywhere, anytime, no power required.

What is Reamping?
Reamping is a powerful studio technique that uses a two-step process: The first step involves recording your original audio track, and the second step (which the Reamp HP is built for) is where you send the recorded audio track back through guitar pedals and amplifiers and record the results. Reamping can be used to try out a guitar DI track through a variety of amplifiers without altering the performance or tiring out the musician, or it can be used for experimenting with a track by layering effects pedals or trying new recording techniques.

The Reamp HP was created to streamline this process by tapping the audio signal from a headphone output jack for reamping, as this output is found on the front panel of most interfaces and is easily accessible when the inspiration to reamp strikes. This simple but effective design makes it easy to get started with reamping in any studio using just a few quick steps.

Multiple Connections, Many Possibilities
The Reamp HP sports a number of connections and controls to make the process of reamping a hassle-free experience. With the ability to re-record audio from nearly any source (including mobile devices) or try out new ideas by passing your favorite music making app through your pedals and amp, the Reamp HP is a highly useful utility for any small studio.

  • One 1/4" TRS stereo input to accept the headphone output of audio interfaces, mixers, or even keyboards
  • One 3.5mm TRS input for easy connection to the outputs of smartphones, tablets, and laptops
  • One 1/4" TS high-impedance mono output to feed guitar amps and effect pedals
  • Dedicated level control for optimal gain-staging through amps and pedal
Noise-Free Reamping
With its transformer-isolated outputs, the Reamp HP is engineered to eliminate the vast majority of noise and ground loops it might encounter. However, in some cases, it can be beneficial to have further assistance via the ground-lift button. This will disconnect the audio ground path between the inputs and output.
The Mono Switch
The Reamp HP comes with a mono switch that will sum the left and right channels of the input signal, which is useful for sending stereo audio tracks to your desired amp. Normally, the Reamp HP will only accept the right channel of stereo signals, requiring single tracks such as guitar and bass tracks to be panned to the right before reamping. However, this design feature can also be useful for mono signals that need more gain. In this case, you can assign your source track to either the left and right outputs of your interface or the left and right channels of your headphone output, and the Reamp HP will sum both mono copies together to provide you with 3 dB more gain in the Reamp HP output.
