Your Ticket to Cinema Mastery
Leveraging the power of a newly-developed APS-C sensor, the Sony FX30 provides everyday content creators and aspiring filmmakers with a powerful, yet accessible cinema camera with which to push their cinematic journey to new heights. It blends an imaging pipeline designed for cinematic capture with a comprehensive feature set and intuitive operation to create a complete system for all levels of filmmaking.
Cinematic Expression
26MP APS-C/Super 35mm Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
The FX30's advanced imaging system is on par with other options in Sony's Cinema Line—capturing detailed 10-bit UHD 4K imagery at up to 120 fps—giving it specs fitting a true cinema camera. The newly-developed 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor are able to create high-quality 4K images with the Super 35mm (16:9) area. This system is capable of capturing 14+ stops of dynamic range and benefits from Dual Base ISO architecture to improve low-light performance.
  • High-sensitivity recording at up to ISO 32000 and Dual Base ISO (800/2500).
  • When using S-Log3, the FX30 can capture 14+ stops of dynamic range.
  • Record in 10-bit 4:2:2 using advanced XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats.
  • Full pixel readout from the 6K sensor creates high-quality UHD 4K video at up to 60 fps.
  • High-speed shooting is possible in 4K at up to 120 fps with a 1.6x crop and in Full HD up to 240 fps.
  • The HDMI output supports 16-bit raw video to select, separately available recorders.
Professional Picture Control
Filmmakers will be able to capture images that are immediately ready to publish for projects with fast turnarounds or opt for maximum quality and flexibility in post thanks to a wide array of picture control options:
  • S-Cinetone uses the same color science as Sony's advanced cinema cameras, including the VENICE line, with natural midtones, soft colors, and smooth highlight roll-off.
  • Picture Profiles, such as S-Log3 and HLG, will capture images with expanded dynamic range and flexibility for editors.
  • Creative Looks can be baked into the recorded footage to create a specific mood during recording and minimize the need for editing.
  • Up to 16 user-created LUTs and three presets can be set for accurately monitoring footage or previewing a specific look during shooting. These can be applied to the camera's monitor or EVF as well as the HDMI output.
Operation for All Levels
Professional features will help ensure beginners to professionals can make the most of the FX30. This includes three log shooting modes:
  • Flexible ISO uses standard ISO settings for simple operation and the greatest flexibility.
  • Cine EI ensures maximum dynamic range capture by recording at a manually selected base ISO setting and applying adjustments to metadata for monitoring and post-production.
  • Cine EI quick will automatically switch between the two base ISO settings for easier operation and great quality.
  • Intuitive Operation and Controls
    Fast Hybrid AF
Enjoy high-speed and highly accurate autofocus performance in every mode, including 4K up to 120 fps, using an advanced Fast Hybrid AF system that uses 495 points (759 points in Photo mode) spread across 90% of the image sensor.
    • Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking will track the eyes of humans and animals.
    • AF Assist function will automatically switch to manual focus with a turn of the lens' focus ring.
    • Focus Map makes it easier to visualize the region of focus in your scene
    5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization
Sony has equipped the FX30 with a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system that will help create smooth imagery even when working handheld. An Active Mode is available that blends optical systems with digital optimizations to capture ultra-smooth footage. The FX30 can also record gyro movement when the optical stabilizers are turned off, which can be used in post to create a stable shot.
    Comprehensive Feature Set
Plenty of Sony's cinema features have found their way into the FX30:
    • Breathing compensation works with select lenses in 4K up to 60p in camera or up to 120p using Catalyst software after recording.
    • Timecode sync input with optional VMC-BNCM1 Timecode Adapter Cable
    • Tally lights for an easy indication that the camera is recording.
    Catalyst Browse and Prepare Integration
The FX30 records a comprehensive array of metadata that can be read and used for advanced post-production work using Sony's Catalyst Browse and Prepare software.

    Metadata recorded includes:
    • Embedded LUT and Exposure Index (EI) data.
    • Gyro and lens stabilization metadata to further reduce camera shake.
    • Breathing compensation can be manually controlled and adjusted.
    • Camera rotation metadata will ensure the footage is displayed as intended.

    A Plethora of Connectivity Options
The FX30 is equipped with a wide array of connections to ensure maximum customization and flexibility on set:
    • Full-size HDMI output features clean output up to 4K 60p as well as 16-bit raw video.
    • Audio is supported on the body with a 3.5mm headphone output and a 3.5mm microphone input.
    • USB-C connection can be used for high-speed data transfer or for powering the camera.
    • Multi-Terminal (Micro-USB) supports various accessories, such as remotes, for expanded functionality.
    • Timecode sync is available through the use of the separately available VMC-BNCM1 Timecode Adapter Cable.
    • Multi Interface Shoe supports advanced accessories, including the included XLR Handle Unit.
    Media Options
For recording high-bitrate footage at high frame rates the FX30 uses an advanced, versatile set of media slots. The camera features dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, allowing users to select between different media types for different situations. Sony FX30 E-Mount Reviews

Not so great in low light

So it's a decent camera for the price but honestly if your lighting isn't controlled the noise in low light is really not great. Now granted it's an apsc camera but I opted for the a7iv as a b cam to my a7siii especially when it's full frame and I got a barely used one for 345 dollar difference from from bnh. The 4k60 crop on the a7iv is much better in low light as well which originally I could not find any specifics on when it was so hyped up on YouTube. I can switch to 4k30 and have a full frame video low light performance if needed. By the way I shoot weddings

    Badly designed power system

Like some other Sony's, you can't power it just with the usb cable (or a dedicated power cable). There has to be a battery in it. Worse than that, it's still draining the battery even when the usb cable is plugged into the charger. So if you were thinking you could just plug it in and forget about it, no such luck. You're still going to need to make sure you've got a few fully charged batteries to make it thru a day even when plugged in. Well, I can just buy Sony's dummy battery! Ummm, they don't even make one, and neither do many (any?) well known equipment makers. So you've got to rely on no-name products and hope that their voltages match their listed specs and that you don't fry the camera. It's a big enough issue (failure on Sony's part) to me that I was tempted to make this a 3 star review, but there are so many good things about this camera at this price point, that I'm giving it the 4. I've also got a few other gripes about supported frame rates in certain codecs and support for certain memory cards in S&Q mode (even though those cards are supported for higher data rates in regular mode). But I'm hoping those issues can be addressed with firmware updates...

An amazing camera from Sony. So much in a small package and at excellent price point. A valuable tool for serious filmmaking.

Great as a B cam or as a budget A cam!

I'm primarily using this as a B cam with an A7SIII and for live streaming long events. So far I'm loving it! I've put it through a few days of filming now and the 2 cameras match great! The FX30 is noticeably sharper and has a little more of a digital crispness, which I like for some situations. I love the softer, more film like look of the A7SIII generally, but there have been times I've wished that camera were sharper. Now I can easily switch between the two to get the look I want for every scene and I love it! The FX30 is also noticeably noisier than the A7SIII, especially when you start pushing its ISO above 2500, but considering its cropped sensor and price I'm actually very happy with the image (it also cleans up well in Neat). If you need low light performance the A7SIII or FX3 are certainly better, but this is still usable in darker settings. You just can't push it as far and you'll probably need to denoise if you're using it in low light. In a studio setting or anywhere with even moderate light the FX30 handles itself just fine imo. Its also GREAT for live streaming! I occasionally do longer live streams and being able to stream in HD while recording internally at 4k is wonderful! The only downside is that while recording and streaming the battery will drain faster than the USB cable can charge it. I was getting a little over 1 1/2 hours of streaming & recording per battery. The event lasted close to 4 hours though and we only stopped recording long enough to swap batteries. The camera also never got noticeably hot. If the fan ever turned on I didn't hear or notice it. Overall excellent value for money and a great video camera in most situations!

    Great Movie Camera

I am going to shoot a full on streaming series next summer so I have been looking to upgrade from my current arsenal of 'prosumer' grade movie cameras. The FX30 fills the bill perfectly. I have a fair collection of APSC lenses and am very familiar with the format. At this time my main lens is the Sony 18-105. It is primarily a video lens and fits the FX30 perfectly. I have been running the FX30 through its paces. I shoot totally in Flexible Log. Great image quality. Dynamic Range lets me capture shadow detail under a car and simultaneously detail on a snow covered mountain in the background. Can't ask for more than that. The FX30 has a raft of buttons, similar to an ENG style camera. Every setting you could need while shooting has its own button. I think for Indie Film and Documentary makers this camera is a total game changer. With a little planning and appropriate accessories you can 'play with the big boys' regarding image quality. You still need good sound and good actors or presenters of course. The FX30 is the 'real deal' movie camera wise.

This camera makes you want to make a film. Really in love with the color the FX30 brings to the screen, very magical. Plus the dual base ISO of 800-2500 gives you a nice space to breathe. I added on the XLR handle. I like having so much control of the audio. I feel like I can do anything with the FX30. As always B&H did awesome, I think I received the camera in two days?? Very cool. Love it. Had a blast. ten out of ten would do again.

    Super 35 Cinema Camera

This camera works as advertised. Bought as a B-Cam, the small form factor and quick ergonomics for filmmaking for the price point is a great deal. In cases of low light, if the situation isn't too dark you can do fine with faster lenses. If you need that low light performance quite often then I would suggest the bigger brother the FX-3.

The Sony FX30 Digital Cinema Camera with XLR Handle Unit (B&H# SOFX30XLR) does offer Sony's Clear Image Zoom feature to electronically both crop in on and enhance the view if one wants to use significantly less than the full pixel width of the sensor. Otherwise, 4K video recording will be downsampled from 6K pixels except in 4K 120p mode.

I know this camera is more designed for video, but it also can take photos. What is the burst rate for photos? As in how many photos can it take per second? Considering upgrading to this from my a6400 for videography and potentially photography as well.
    Asked by: Riley
The Sony FX30 Digital Cinema Camera with XLR Handle Unit (B&H# SOFX30XLR), like the vast majority of professionally oriented cinema cameras, does not have a mechanical (i.e. physical) shutter. As such, it relies on its electronic rolling shutter (i.e. taking disparate readings on each pixel in each line thereof, one at a time, from top to bottom) to produce each frame (in video) or each photo (when taking stills). The speed of the sensor readout by the camera being the sole means by which to reduce any artifact resulting from the earlier time when higher lines of pixels are read vs. the later time when lower lines of pixels are read, objects moving quickly and laterally in the frame (e.g. helicopter blades) can exhibit what is often called a "rolling shutter effect." The fast moving object appears as if it is bent. Lateral movement is also very common in scenarios when photographers might be shooting bursts of photos such as when a race car zooms by. Perhaps because that is the most common use for continuous (i.e. burst) photo shooting, as of this writing and at least in the initial firmware, continuous shooting is not supported. You can take single shots only. Flash synchronization is also not supported, by the way. While this will work just fine for many portrait and landscape uses, the FX30 would thus not be an ideal choice for sport or bird still photo shooting. Please note that the Sony FX3 does have a mechanical shutter and could therefore be a good alternative in your intended use case, as does the a7S III, a7 IV, and so on.

    Asked by: Cory
The Sony FX30 Digital Cinema Camera with XLR Handle Unit (B&H# SOFX30XLR) would constitute a significant upgrade in terms of autofocus vs. the autofocus of the FS series of Sony cameras. Moreover, it is obviously much smaller. However, it does not feature any internal NDs, nor an SDI port, so if you need those features then you may wish to consider other options such as the Sony FX6 Full-Frame Cinema Camera (Body Only) (B&H# SOFX6) which would be a more typical upgrade:
