SmallRig MagicFIZ Reviews

Works well for me

Not sure what the negative reviews are here, but it did take me a moment to check on some details before I chose to buy it. After a month or so, to me, it works great. The front dial to focus has minimal latency, and response is fast. Set up is easy. The only constructive criticism would be if the mounting option would be a little more versatile. I was hoping to have different mounting options so I can place the handle near the lens barrel (for better stability), but I only had the option to secure it to the camera body/cage - which feels a bit awkward, but manageable. Overall, this is a good piece of gear in my opinion and use.

Very bad build quality on hand grip

Very very bad build quality on the hand grip - had a loose fitting on the scroll wheel which meant it was impossible to tell when you reached the end of the focus pull. Do not recommend. Thankfully B&H have a good return policy.

As the expectations so the disappointment.

As the expectations so the disappointment. Dealing with calibration for hours is not easy. I tried to run it on SIRUI 75 T2.9 with 1.25X adapter on Sony FX3 without much success. The installation document is not clear. Also there was no control over the speed. I may have received a defective unit, I will update later. Beyond the stated problem, the design is flawed when it is connected to the system in several different ways.

Simply Magic

Great wireless follow focus system. I just wish the manual was a little more user friendly. But slowly working my way through trial and error. I have not yet been able to sync this to my camera with BT for rec stop, but thats very much a me-issue. Like I said, I wish the manual was more 'first time wireless follow focus dummy' - proof. If i had one comment, it feels like the wheel is more designed for right hand. I wish the buttons and screen were somewhat ergonomically placed for when handheld shooting, but thats just me.

Strong Focus

Where do I start I love this thing. I used to use the DJI follow focus that came with my RSC-2 pro combo gimbal. The motor barely had the strength to focus my photography lenses it might have worked on cinema lenses I wouldn't know. The small rig follow focus though not only is fast to focus on the same lenses but it can also do zoom. I have the sigma 24-70dg gn art for my A7IV and it is not an internal focus lens and takes some effort to do by hand but the magic fiz follow focus can easily handle that as well. I notice some people faulting the build quality but if feels solid to me. I love the Bluetooth connection to my camera for start and stop recording I only had to set it up once and now when I turn them both on it happens automatically. The ability to manually set your focus points was crucial for me because I don't have cinema lenses with hard stops. I can still use any lens and the calibration is a bit of a pain but at least it works - it didn't with my dji follow focus.

Basic kit, works just fine.

I bought the basic kit, it's quite useful due to the multiple power options and configurations at this price point. It's precise enough for my work, the motor is robust, the only area that could use improvement is the battery plate that slides on to the motor. It's not perfect but I prefer this over some other budget wireless follow focus products I've used in the past.

SmallRig MagicFIZ Wireless Follow Focus Handgrip Kit comes with a 3/8-16 to nato clam adaptor only (hand grip adapter). The shoulder rig adapter which is the dedicated rossette adapter for this unit only comes with the SmallRig MagicFIZ Wireless Follow Focus Two-Motor Kit. Unfortunately this unit is not provide by SmallRig as individual parts. You could use other similar parts bu the connection is not as solid as the Smallrig shoulder rig adapter.

Can I power the FF motor with a usb-c cable? For example from the usb-c outlet of the Ronin RS3?
Asked by: Eduardo
The SmallRig MagicFIZ Wireless Follow Focus Basic Kit (B&H# SM3781) features a handwheel controller and also a follow focus motor called a Wireless Receiver Motor, among other parts. The SmallRig Wireless Receiver Motor (B&H# SM3263) can accept a power input through its USB C port. The minimum voltage required is 5VDC, the same voltage that is provided by USB ports such as the one on the RS3 handle and other typical USB ports. Only sources providing 10W (i.e. 2A) or more should be used.

The retaining/locating pin is missing from my nato adapter and the handle moves freely if not overly tightened. Yes, The Smallrig system’s BLE module helps in wireless REC start/stop, follow focus and zoom which can also be realized by control cables (ID: 3325, 2971, 2970, depending on your camera type) with Wireless Receiver Motor. More info on supported camera models - https://bit.ly/3Nhpp5B
