Sirui SATURN Anamorphic 35mm T2.9 Overview

The Sony E-mount Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x Carbon Fiber Anamorphic Lens from Sirui provides a classic anamorphic look in a compact, lightweight form. Ideal for gimbal, stabilizer, drone, and handheld use, this lens produces a wider look equivalent to a 22mm spherical full-frame field of view. It measures only 4" in length and features a carbon fiber barrel that reduces the weight of the lens. The lens produces horizontal neutral streaks when pointed at a light source, giving your footage a classic anamorphic look.

An image captured in 16:9 is de-squeezed to an anamorphic 2.8:1 aspect ratio, whereas shooting in 3:2 yields a 2.4:1 final image. The T2.9 aperture produces a shallow depth of field, separating your subject from the foreground and the 10-blade aperture creates oval bokeh effects.

Full-Frame Coverage
  • The lens provides sensor coverage for up to full-frame cameras.
  • Aspherical elements eliminate chromatic aberration.
Lightweight Design
  • This Saturn-series lens is made with a carbon fiber front barrel that reduces the overall weight while remaining durable.
  • The compact, lightweight design is ideal for handheld, gimbal, and stabilizer use.
Anamorphic Design
  • Horizontal neutral streak effects create a classic anamorphic look.
  • 10 aperture blades produce oval bokeh effects.
Constant 1.6x Squeeze
  • The 35mm Saturn lens maintains a constant 1.6x squeeze ratio at all focusing points, ensuring that the subject size doesn't change as you pull the focus.

Sirui SATURN Anamorphic 35mm T2.9 Reviews

Great but with limit

I've been using this lens for a year and a half (since the end of 2023), and it's been fantastic for both photos and videos — I absolutely love it. I won’t repeat all the pros that have already been covered in so many YouTube reviews. Instead, I want to share two things I wish I had known before buying: 1. Vignetting in photo mode on some cameras: The lens works flawlessly on my Sony A7C for both photos and videos. However, when I use it with my Sony A7R V in photo mode, there's noticeable vignetting unless I switch to Super 35 mode. Video mode is fine. It’s not a huge issue — the A7C handles full-frame mode without any problems, and the A7R V still delivers great resolution in Super 35 — but it would be great if Sirui could improve this in the future. 😄 2. Sony gyro stabilization isn’t supported: This isn't a defect, just something to be aware of. Sony's gyro stabilization doesn't work with this lens. I still would’ve bought it, but I wish I had known beforehand.

Great lens depending on the camera you use

I really wanted to absolutely love this lens. I bought the sony mount to use on my ZCam F6 to fly it on my gimbal. But unfortunately it does not cover the entire sensor and has noticeable Vignetting. On my Sony A7riii and Zcam S6 it works amazingly. Great clarity, smooth through, not over the top flaring, and great bokeh. But I really bought it specifically for the F6. So if you're using it on a Sony or Super 35 sensor camera you will have no issues. But my F6 sensor was a little too big for it.

Does this lens squeeze factor change due to where it is in the focus throw?
Asked by: Tim
The squeeze is always consistent on the Sirui SATURN Anamorphic 35mm T2.9. The image circle will never change. When you capture video at 16:9, it will desqueeze to an anamorphic 2.8:1 aspect ratio. When you capture at 3:2, it will desqueeze to an anamorphic 2.4:1 aspect ratio.

Does this lens look bad when used on a crop sensor like FX30 or center cropped on an A7 IV?
Asked by: Cale
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so it depends on the aesthetic that you are going for. When used in a cropped form factor, the Sirui Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x Carbon Fiber Full-Frame Anamorphic Lens (E Mount, Neutral Flare) will cause less corner distortion and provide a sharper image by using the middle portion of the lens to render your image.

Is there any difference optically between this version and the venus? Smaller, lighter and cheaper so what's the catch?
Asked by: Jonah
Sirui and Laowa are completely different lens makers, so there are certainly differences. To determine the main optical differences, it is suggested to reach out to the manufacturers to get more technical data for them.

Can the C70 desqueeze 1.6x properly in-camera? I don't want to need an external monitor.
Asked by: Tim
No, the Canon EOS C70 Cinema Camera (RF Mount) will not be able to properly desqueeze the Sirui Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x Carbon Fiber Full-Frame Anamorphic Lens' (RF Mount, Neutral Flare) 1.6x squeeze in camera, as the C70 only supports 1.3x and 2.0x desqueeze.
