A lightweight, travel-friendly, full-frame camera body, the Canon EOS R8 Mirrorless Camera offers powerful photo and video capabilities for both photographers and multimedia content creators. Utilizing a newly developed sensor also found in the EOS R6 Mark II, the R8 features a 24.2MP CMOS sensor paired with a DIGIC X processor. Together, this combination provides outstanding stills performance, impressive 4K 60p 10-bit video, and fast autofocus.

24.2MP Full-Frame Sensor and DIGIC X Processing
Pairing a powerful full-frame 24.2MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC X image processor, the R8 delivers high resolution imagery with rich and accurate colors. Designed to work in a variety of lighting condition, this camera offers a flexible ISO 100-102400 range that is expandable to ISO 204800 for working in difficult lighting conditions. Using the full width of the sensor, 6K oversampled UHD 4K 60p video recording is supported as is Full HD 1080 180p for slow motion playback. The R8 offers 4:2:2 10-bit shooting and up to 2-hours of video recording is now available at 29.97 fps, allowing you to keep your project rolling. Capable of processing high speed bursts, the DIGIC X image processor also supports up to 40 fps continuous shooting and offers pre-shooting support, which allows the camera to start recording images 0.5 seconds prior to pressing the shutter release button.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
Featuring 1053 automatic AF points that cover the entire sensor area, the advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system provides extremely fast and accurate focusing performance. This phase-detection focusing system offers enhanced subject detection and tracking, with the ability to intelligently recognize people, animals, and vehicles while automatically locking onto these subjects and maintaining sharp focus throughout burst and video captures. Additionally, this autofocus system's low-luminance limit focuses down to an impressive -6.5 EV for accurate focusing in dark conditions.
HDR PQ and Canon Log 3
Though the EOS R8 camera can record impressive video straight out of camera, content creators looking to take the next step in their imaging journey have the choice of two powerful video recording options in HDR PQ or Canon Log 3 video recording. With HDR PQ recording a 10-bit color file is recorded that does not require additional editing. This 10-bit HDR file is compatible with HDR displays such as TVs, monitors, and smartphones, which display your video with even more color accuracy and dynamic range than standard displays. For creators who like to edit their video files, Canon Log 3 is also available, creating a 10-bit log file which allows for powerful recovery of highlights and shadows as well as creative color grading capability.
Vertical Movie Mode and Aspect Markers
Movie rotation information can be set during or after movie recording, allowing videos to be played in vertical composition when viewing on a smartphone. The Aspect Markers function displays visual markers for different aspect ratios that may be desired for posting the same file to various social media sites. This display provides consideration for proper composition for the different deliverable files that can be created when editing.
Livestreaming
UVC/UAC compatibility allows the R8 to be used as a web camera to stream live video in Full HD, without additional computer software, to applications such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, and similar video conferencing software. Thanks to the full-frame image sensor, you'll be able to have versatility in your exposure, as well as strong background separation when using bright aperture lenses for video conferencing or livestreaming content.
Movie Digital IS
Record stable videos efficiently with minimum equipment, even when shooting handheld, with Movie Digital IS 5-axis image stabilization. Camera-shake vibrations are reduced even more through coordinated control of Movie Digital IS when using a RF lens featuring optical image stabilization.
2.36m-Dot EVF and Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
Providing high-resolution eye-level viewing, the R8 is designed with a bright and clear 2.36m-dot OLED EVF for a pleasing electronic viewfinder experience. The EVF supports up to a 120 fps refresh rate and has been designed to provide a bright, sharp, and colorful 100% view of the subject at hand.

Additionally, a large 3.0" 1.62m-dot vari-angle touchscreen makes it easy to compose and shoot from virtually any angle. With touch and drag functionality, you can intuitively and swiftly move the autofocus point on the touch-panel LCD.
Flexible Connectivity
  • Wired and wireless connectivity options allow for multiple methods of transferring photos and videos, livestreaming, as well as for remotely controlling the camera. Physically, the camera features a remote port, a USB-C port, a micro-HDMI port, a microphone input, and a headphone jack for monitoring sound.
  • Built-in Bluetooth pairing lets you easily connect the camera to compatible smart devices using the free Canon Camera Connect app. This low-energy wireless connection helps preserve battery life, while providing remote control of the camera. It also sends continuously updated GPS location data from your phone, letting you geotag what you've captured so you know precisely where you captured the photo.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables wireless functions, such as remote live view, file viewing, and transfer, by connecting to Wi-Fi quickly and seamlessly. Using the Canon Camera Connect app, you can also transfer files to your mobile device to browse and share on social media.
  • Built-in USB-C allows you to connect the camera to a smartphone or computer. All Canon Camera Connect app features that can be used with Wi-Fi are now available when the camera and smartphone are connected via USB, using a compatible cable for your device.
Next-Generation Multi-Function Shoe
An update to a conventional hot shoe, the Multi-Function Shoe adds a row of pins at the front of the design to permit greater accessory functionality as well as provide power to select accessory types that traditionally rely on separate batteries.

Canon R8 Reviews

Amazing Camera.. for $1,499.

The verdict is in the R8 is a great camera... And the Budget RF lenses are great lenses. My parents gave me a polaroid one shot camera in 1967. I have never stopped taking pictures. I have been rigorously testing the R8 with adapted EF lenses and RF lenses around where I live. I even took it with me to the dump. With the R8 I am getting usable images at ISO 100,000 in the shade! With adapted EF 135 f2, EF 24-85, and third party EF-7mm lenses I am getting lovely Photos @ 12FPS in E shutter . Whilst shooting photos or video I only use the viewfinder . the battery last longer and has not overheated..I believe the back LCD panel causes the overheating and quick battery drain. I only have one battery.Batt life is acceptable. I also purchased 3 lenses: the RF 600mm IS F11, RF 100- 400 IS F5.6-F8, RF 16mm F2.8. Using the 600mm and the 100-400mm lenses : with 30FPS pre-burst and 40FPS normal speed I have been able to capture Incredible photos of animals in motion. The 100-400mm is small and light. At 400mm it is excellent for photographing minute flowers and small butterflies from three feet away. With my MACRO camera I have to put the lens a few MILLIMETERS from the insect or flower and the critter always flies away. The 16mm takes lovely wide images.. I have been taking photos for many years. I have been called by friends and relatives an accomplished photographer. The comments my photos received in the past were: Thank you, Wonderful, Very Nice, Perfect. I have taken test photos with all my lenses EF and RF on the R8. I am not done with testing . The comments received on the TEST photos have been: FANTASTIC.! YOU TOOK THAT?! THE AUDUBON SOCIETY WANTS THOSE PICTURES! YOU COULD SELL THOSE. As I said...The verdict is in the R8 is a great camera... And the Budget RF lenses are great lenses.

Solid little guy.

I haven't put it through its paces just yet but have used it a few times already. My main reason for purchasing was a third camera for video, a third back up for photos and a small lightweight camera for backpacking and travel. The specs on this camera are outstanding for the price. I used the camera once at a wedding and will say I do not like the small feel for that use. With a lens and flash on it there isn't enough real estate to get a solid grip. So it's a tad uncomfortable to use long term as a main body. However, it will be absolutely perfect for the purposes that I intend to use it. This camera launches Canon ahead of most of the competitors in 2023 (imo). Can't wait to use the heck out of this in the coming years.

I didn't even look through the viewfinder. The eye focus is incredible. The 20 fps is incredible. The jpgs are even incredible. The sensor is incredible, even up to iso 25,600. The size is small and appreciated. Silence of e-shutter. This is an e-shutter camera. Best camera I've ever had! $1499 is a steal! Love it!

so far so good

Got the R8 as an upgrade to mirrorless full frame from my old 70D. So far I am enjoying going mirrorless. While I am still climbing the learning curve I am enjoying the lighter weight and small size. I am an avid amateur and use it for landscape and nature photography mostly. A little worried that the battery/card door is a little loose and yes, the battery life is really poor. you will definitely need two and if you are traveling I would probably get a third. The focus ability is amazing. I think the shutter button is a light touch as I have hit it a ton already and taken lots of pics of the ground. I am looking forward to experimenting more with the R8 and learning its functions. I am not sorry I upgraded. Have been wanting to do it for a long time.

I went back and forth between purchasing this camera because I don't need it as I own the R3, R5, R6MII, and the R7. I ordered and cancelled twice, but I finally ordered again to see if it would be good for my 19 year old daughter who owns an R10 and wants to join the full frame club. I was pleasantly surprised at how similar the tracking in the R8 is to the R6MII. It truly behaves the same and the files are identical! If you purchased this as a "b cam" to pair with your R6MII, then you will LOVE THIS! I did purchase the grip for a better feel in hand and two extra batteries. I got 1300 raw shots before my battery died in the field the other day as I was in the park taking some wildlife shots. Not bad. I did NOT use for video so I can't speak to video specs. As a tool for photography, this is a fantastic camera and auto focus for this price point! If you are looking into getting into the R system for photography, look no further than this! Save the money and get a good lens! Be sure to pick up at least two extra batteries. My daughter is going to enjoy this camera and is making out like a bandit!

Great camera but mine overheats in photo mode

I've been very pleased with the new Canon R8. In almost every way it is a real improvement on my original RP. Unfortunately, I was just out on a sunny day with a temperature in the low 80s F (but very low humidity) using the Canon RF 70-200mm f4 lens. After about 45 minutes I began seeing a warning icon indicating that the camera was getting hot. After about 20 more minutes the R8 camera simply shut down 'due to overheating'. Note that I was just shooting single photos and not using the video features and not even using continuous shooting in photo mode. Looking online, I see a number of complaints about this problem with the R8. Hopefully, it can be fixed with a software update as was the case for the R5 that had a similar overheating problem.

Canon R8 is very lightweight full frame camera and fast camera focus for everything. Nice to everyday use. But need to buy extra batteries for support.
