JVC GY-HC500 Overview

The GY-HC500UN Connected Cam 4K NDI-Enabled Professional Camcorder from JVC is an updated, NDI-enabled model with all the same features as the original GY-HC500U UHD 4K camcorder. It captures video in both NTSC and PAL compatible frame rates and is designed to seamlessly work with both traditional as well as NDI and IP workflows. It features a 1" CMOS sensor and an integrated 20x optical zoom lens, while the camera can create a 40x digital zoom. The camera captures in various flavors of ProRes as well as MP4, and it is capable of streaming HD over IP via a wired connection. The integrated 20x zoom lens features three manual control rings for iris, focus, and zoom. The EVF features LCOS technology and over 1.2 million dots of resolution, while the built-in flip-out LCD viewfinder is just under 4" diagonally. The camera can live stream HD while recording 4K and outputting 4K via the HDMI output. It features IFB and return video over IP as well as auto FTP, so your video files transfer automatically. It has two SDHC/SDXC card slots and features a slot for an optional M.2 SSD (requires optional media adapter caddy) for capturing UHD at 60/50p.

NDI is a leading technology that allows hardware- and software-based video devices to communicate and collaborate over any standard Ethernet-based network. Among its many benefits is the reduction of hardware required to operate, and the ability to send multiple video streams over a single connection. It also allows for multiple video sources to be managed in real time with the easy-to-use NDI Discovery function of the network.
10-bit ProRes 422 at 4K50/60 and recording to M.2 SSD (requires optional JVC M.2 SSD Media Adapter Caddy).

Have only had it for a short time but I really love the focus and exposure rings on the lens

Update after Warranty work

After pretty complete testing I discovered I had a pretty substantial problem with the lens, plus the trailing effect in low light is simply unacceptable. I sent the unit in for warranty and they did replace the main board which somehow did fix the lens stability problem. As to the trailing effect, that is still present. Must be intended behavior since JVC didn't fix it. It's noticeable at normal lighting and really noticeable in low lighting. Locked the shutter at 1/120 which should have solved this problem, but it didn't. JVC Kenwood doesn't do a good job of communicating the work they performed and why, even after repeated inquiries. It's just plain pathetic that a professional camera can have it's but whooped by an iPhone/Pixel on a gimbal. This is not intended to be a negative toward BH, they are great.
