- GR Engine 6
- 28mm f/2.8 Lens (Full-Frame Equivalent)
- 3-Axis Shake Reduction System
The long-awaited installment in the popular series of fast, compact cameras, the Ricoh GR III Diary Edition Digital Camera continues the legacy of being a pocketable powerhouse, offering impressive image quality, fast response, and immense portability. Featuring a redeveloped imaging feature-set, the GR III incorporates a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and GR Engine 6 to realize smooth tonality, rich color and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400, along with the ability to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG stills or Full HD video. Complementing the sensor design is an 18.3mm, f/2.8 prime lens, which has a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28mm. Additionally, a first for GR, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System compensates for the effects of camera shake to help render sharper handheld shots when working with slower shutter speeds.

Does the image stabilization work in video mode?
Does the image stabilization work in video mode?
It does not matter actually because the video focus gets lost unexpectedly and frequently. and bad video quality. In other words, the video option is not usable.

Why doesn't it come with the optical viewfinder? Wife got it for Xmas and I just opened and neither the strap and the viewfinder are in the box.
Many smaller cameras are designed without a viewfinder in order to keep the size as small as possible.

Thinking about Ricoh for family/casual photos, 1. Has the AF got any better since launch? 2. Is video total garbage for casual use? Shooting kids/family, is that doable with this camera? Want something super pocketable for capture memories (not streets). Thoughts?
The Ricoh GR III Digital Camera autofocus is very good.
And as for a pocket camera to take with you I feel a good one.
Note the lens is a fixed 28mm lens, very sharp but not a zoom.
So, if you do want to take shots that are further away that might not be best for you.

No viewfinder? Does it bother you at all?
Does not bother me one bit when you take the size into consideration. You won't miss not having one.

Any quirks, like lens freezing, not retracting, "card not formatted" erroneous message, etc, or is it quirk - free?
Seems like a well thought out and well engineered camera.
Only quirks I know are heating up in heavy use, and a lens sticking thing they address in the troubleshooting section of the manual. Basically refined and smooth and dependable.
