SmallRig 3940 Overview

This lightweight aluminum Camera Cage from SmallRig protects and provides accessory mounting for your Nikon Z8 camera. This formfitting cage maintains access to all the camera's controls, battery, and SD card slots, and it features a variety of mounting options. The camera secures onto the cage using a 1/4"-20 camera screw with a locating pin, and a side locking adapter further prevents twisting.

In addition to one shoe mount, a side NATO rail, and multiple 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 accessory threads, the cage incorporates ARRI-style locating holes for preventing accessories from twisting when mounted. There are also QD (Quick Detach) mounts and strap slots for even more options. The cage also has a built-in Arca-type quick release plate on the bottom for tripod mounting.

Stupid Design Flaw

I own several of these for other cameras, and use them for low angle photography with a monopod attached to the top of the cage. The others I have fit perfectly and allow full use of all camera functions. With this one there’s a major flaw for my purposes - Smallrig have made the vertical part of the cage on the left front too big to allow the secure attachment & use of the Nikon MC-30 10-pin remote trigger. You’d have to take a file or Dremel grinder to remove a part of the cage, and then repaint the ugly wound you end up with.

The cage is a great fit for the Z8, it also allows for extra protection. Love the tool compartment at the bottom.

What size hex key do I need for the little set screw on the bottom of the cage and the M2.5 screw that goes into the strap lug?

Yes, because the SmallRig Camera Cage for Nikon Z8 has 1/4"-20 threads on both sides of the cage, the cage can be mounted to a tripod in both landscape and portrait orientations.
