Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM Reviews
First copy was decentered.
My first copy was badly decentered. Second was much better. B and H made the exchange easy.
The only non-L lens that will ultimately stay in my RF kit
I'm typically not huge fan of Canon's consumer grade lenses, but all of the usual compromises that are drawbacks in those lenses work to make this one of the smallest, lightest, full-frame lenses ever produced. This is the lens you'll take to shoot some JPEGs when you wouldn't otherwise take a real camera. Pairing this with something like the R8 or RP, gives you the smallest, lightest full-frame package available. Its most negative quality is significant optical distortion, but it's well-corrected in-camera. Sharpness-wise it's not going to give off a 3D pop, but it isn't a detriment either (think RF 35 1.8 at 2.8). What really sold me is the character of the images. Color rendition, falloff, and backgrounds are all fantastic; it reminds me of Canon's old FD lenses but with much better sharpness across the frame.
Excedes expectations
Big performance in a tidy package. Renders beautiful images that far exceeded my expectations. The is sharp with some typical fall-off in the corners and is excellent in low light. Paired with the R5, it's a sweet compact daily shooter.
Pancake prime lens!
For travel, the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is an excellent pancake prime lens to pair with the compact Canon EOS R8. You will enjoy this lens no matter how you use it!
One of two primary Primes
My wife wanted a lightweight and simple photography solution that allowed her to use my fancy lenses if she wanted to but kept things featherweight and simple if she didn't. I have an R7 with RF F2.8 trinity zooms and the RF 100-500L and am trilled. She has an R8 that she pairs with this lens or the small RF 50 F1.8 which gives her an extremely portable and capable indoor/outdoor and lowlight kit. I took it on a quick motorcycle ride this afternoon as a break from work and completely enjoyed shooting with her R8 & this RF28 (see attached). I honestly can't think of a single complaint for the money, weight, and size. I've honestly had to get used to the amazingly reduced size and weight differences between my older EF gear and anything RF. Once you're past the 'this has got to be a toy' phase and start to appreciate the image quality you can start thanking Canon for all the research and work they've put into these tiny weightless things.
Impossibly small, great image quality!
I picked up the RF28mm as a lightweight option to use while out hiking on my R5. I've quickly fallen in love with this tiny giant and have been very impressed with the image quality. It's not much larger than a lens cap and you absolutely forget it is on the camera at all.
