Avantone Pro Planar the II Reference-Grade Open-Back Headphones (Creme)
Key Features
  • For Pro Mixing or Audiophile Use
  • Planar Magnetic Neodymium Drivers
  • Fast Transient Response
  • Lighter Weight & Improved Cable Design
Designed for discerning professionals and audiophiles alike, the Avantone Pro Planar the II Headphones utilize planar magnetic drivers with neodymium magnets to deliver stunningly accurate sound for mix engineers, musicians, and hi-fi enthusiasts. This second-generation edition improves upon the original with an upgraded detachable cable and lighter-weight design. These particular over-ear, open-back headphones are styled in a creme finish.

The planar drivers offer accuracy, clarity, and a fast transient response with a natural-sounding bass and resounding high end. Where moving-coil driver designs use a magnetic field to push and pull a driver around, planar magnetic headphones utilize a precise matrix of miniature magnets to provide an evenly distributed, symmetric force to both sides of the incredibly thin, ultralight diaphragm. This produces a signal with very little harmonic distortion as well as incredibly fast response times for a pure, unadulterated sound.

Yes, the Planar the II headphones are a bit larger than standard headphones, but they are surprisingly light and are outfitted with soft earpads, bolstering long listening sessions. The 6.6' detachable cable can be plugged into either earcup and has been upgraded to ensure noise-free performance. In addition to the 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter, the headphones include a shoulder bag, which has a pouch for the included cable.

Avantone Pro Planar II Reviews

Excellent sound and comfort

The sound quality on these headphones is fantastic. You can really get a sense of a much fuller range of sound. It's pretty even across the highs, mids, and lows with maybe a small emphasis on the mids. So closer to a neutral reference/studio profile which I like, but is something to keep in mind if you're looking for a heavier emphasis on something like say bass or with a warmer feel. Nothing feels too weak though. The sense of depth and location to the sound stage is great as well. From what I gathered you usually have to spend more to get this level fidelity from makers like hifiman. I got them as an upgrade from my Beyerdynamic DT 770 pros and the difference is significant and well worth it. As a bonus they're also low impedance so you don't need a really powerful amp to get good sound out of them. I prefer to run them with a DAC/Amp but you could probably just use them with the built in audio jacks with most equipment if you want or need to. Oh and the cable it comes with is decent, but there's room to upgrade to a higher quality cable if you want with 3.5 jacks on either side of the headphones. The one that it comes with is working just fine so I'm in no rush, but you may feel differently. Also nice to have the option if your cables wear out but I think this is a fairly common feature at this price point. The headset itself is also really comfortable. They settle easily onto your head at a natural position and I never feel like they're putting pressure in the wrong spots or anything like that. Plus they look nice and have a unique aesthetic style with the rectangular shape and sort of honeycomb hex pattern on the backs that I like. Seem to be well made as well, but time will tell on that. So yeah I really like them. You may want different qualities from your headphones, and there are higher quality ones out there for a lot more, but If you ask me these are well worth their cost and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good cost to value set of hi-fi planar headphones
