An unprecedented super-telephoto zoom lens for Z-series mirrorless cameras, the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens from Nikon provides outstanding sharpness across the entire zoom range. Created for the demanding needs of sports and wildlife photographers, this lens covers an expansive telephoto range allowing you to capture thrilling photos and videos in a relatively compact and lightweight design.
Optical Design
  • Features six ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements to increase light transmission and decrease light dispersion, effectively eliminating chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and color accuracy.
  • Utilizes a single aspherical glass element to minimize distortion and coma at wide apertures. The aspherical element also enables a lighter and more compact size, which is particularly useful for super-telephoto zoom lenses.
  • A FLC fluorine coating effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease, and dirt, ensuring easy removal even when they adhere to the lens surface. This coating endures a high frequency of lens surface wiping, and its anti-reflective effect also contributes to the capture of clear images.
Autofocus and Vibration Reduction
  • STM stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, and quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This drive system also offers impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • A/M mode standing for Auto-Priority Manual Mode enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation.
  • Internal focusing lens design keeps the lens the same size during zoom and autofocus operation. This also allows for a compact form factor capable of close focusing distances.

  • Provides a minimum focusing distance 4.3', along with a 0.25x maximum magnification at the 180mm zoom position for capturing close-up details and subjects.

  • Built-in optical Vibration Reduction (VR) system improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. This in-lens technology provides a stabilization effect equivalent to a shutter speed of 5.5 stops faster, reducing camera blur when panning to track fast-moving subjects.
Handling and Design
  • At its widest setting, this lens is great for locating your subject. With a mere 70° turn of the zoom ring, you can reach all the way to 600mm for tight framing with beautiful background compression.
  • Customizable control ring and function buttons provide intuitive control points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Durable and weather-sealed lens barrel along with a front fluorine coating for use in inclement conditions.
  • Rotating tripod collar offers mounting stability when shooting atop a monopod or tripod.
  • Compatible with Nikon Z-series teleconverters, the lens allows you to extend your effective focal length to 840mm with the 1.4x teleconverter and up to 1200mm with the 2x teleconverter.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Reviews

Superb telephoto zoom lens

This is a superb telephoto zoom lens, and it represents a great value. This is the perfect compliment for the Z system, and when paired with the Z 800mm pf lens provides all the focal lengths a wildlife photographer needs.

Great lens!  (though collar could be better)

Fantastic lens in terms of quality and speed. Had it for a couple of weeks and it is already my main lens for wildlife. That said, I didn't give it five stars because the collar is not Arca-compatible so it can't be used directly with standard QR systems, need to add a plate. Also, it is actually a bit heavier than I was expecting for a lens f/5.6-6.3

Exceeded Expectations

I expected this lens to be decent, all Z mounts are. I expected it to be a good value for the dollars. I did not expect it to be outstanding, but it is. The lens performs incredibly well. Internal zoom keeps the lens balanced and compact. Focus is snappy with the Z8 and Z9. The zoom ring is smooth with a relatively short throw. Image Stabilization works incredibly well. IQ is sharp and rock solid at f8. The lens is slightly soft wide open. My only two complaints are the location of the manual focus ring and Nikon's decades of stubbornness with the lens foot. The manual focus ring is easy to move when shooting with the lens foot on top of the camera. As you zoom, your hand will also activate peaking because it's touching the ring. The lens foot does not have an Arca or Manfrotto slot, so you need to add a lens plate. All that being said, if you shoot long tele and you want a great lens at rock bottom $$, this lens is it.

Amazing Surprisingly Good

1. I'm a professional 2. I was hesitant to purchase this lens due to the MTF Charts and my recent expectations from the 400mm 2.8z, and the 70-200 2.8z. 3. Blew my expectations out of the water!!!! 4. Easily handholdable, just remove the lens collar and shaves off the weight. 5. VR was actually pretty awesome! 6. Video functionalities were actually double as awesome... shooting 8.3K RAW 60p slow-mo on the Z9, hand held. With a little post stabilization shots were pretty much like on a tripod... just with the freedom of me being able to move around without the restrictions of a tripod / gimbal.

Thoroughly impressed with the performance

I recently purchased the Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens for use with my Nikon Z9 camera, and I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with its performance. This lens is a true gem for wildlife and sports photographers, offering an exceptional zoom range and image quality that exceeded my expectations. The image quality produced by this lens is outstanding. The sharpness and clarity of the images I captured were exceptional throughout the entire zoom range. Even when shooting at the maximum 600mm focal length, the lens delivered sharp, detailed photos with vibrant colors and minimal distortion. The optical performance is truly remarkable. The 180-600mm zoom range provides incredible versatility. The built-in VR technology allows for crisp shots even when shooting handheld. The lens is well-built and feels robust in hand.

Great replacement for the 200-500

Just got it and have only taken a few images so far but I already love this as a replacement to my 200-500. It's lighter, native to the Z system and love that it zooms internally with a REALLY short turn of the barrel especially compared to the 200-500 which was ridicules to zoom as far as turning with one hand.

Can this lens be used for night sky shots like stars the moon and such or is there a better lens?
Asked by: Dave
Too slow for stars and the Milky Way, but excellent for the moon. It takes the TC's also which is a plus. The 1.4TC would probably be best to retain sharpness and fairly low ISO.

Can this be used sharply for insect images, such as butterflies and dragonflies?
Asked by: Kathryn
I have gotten very good results with the F mount 200-500 for such subjects. Since this is the mirrorless replacement, I would expect you can get good results as well. Z lens's are just outstanding. I don't believe it will compare to the Z 105 macro for these types of images, however. That lens is just amazing.
