The Multi-Tool for the Multi-Hyphenate
A compact synthesis of Sony's Cinema Line innovations, α-series still-image rendering quality, and advancements in AI-based recognition technology, the a6700 Mirrorless Camera puts powerful and versatile imaging capabilities into the hands of ambitious content creators. Powered-up by its combo of the latest 26.0MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR processor, the camera nevertheless weighs less than its predecessor, resulting in a mobile workhorse capable of an unstrained 11 fps continuous stills capture or stress-free UHD 4K video oversampled from a 6K resolution, making it a formidable multi-tool for the multi-hyphenate creative.
26.0MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor
The Sony a6700's advanced imaging system is powered by the 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor, a combination introduced in the FX30 Digital Cinema Camera that is capable of 10-bit UHD 4K imagery at up to 120 fps or a top continuous shooting rate of 11 fps with AF and AE and up to 59 compressed raw still images in bursts. The introduction of the back-illuminated structure to the camera's sensor gives it a higher resolution without sacrificing sensitivity. With an ISO range of 100-32000 that's expandable to ISO50-102400 when shooting stills, the camera boasts low-light performance with minimal noise and more than 14 stops of dynamic range.
Cinematic Video in UHD 4K
Along with its powerful sensor and processor, the Sony a6700 brings a strong suite of professional video features from its Cinema Line series to everyday content creators and aspiring filmmakers.
  • Full pixel readout from the 6K sensor creates high-quality UHD 4K video, with approximately 2.4x the data required for 4K video, minimizing moiré and aliasing.
  • UHD 4K recording is possible with frame rates up to 120p and full HD recording up to 240p, using full 1:1 pixel readout without binning.
  • Record in 10-bit 4:2:2 using advanced XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats for consistent performance and quality at bitrates up to 600 Mb/s.
  • Record for more than two hours in 4K 30p, or more than 40 minutes at 4K 60p on a 128GB card.
  • Slow & Quick (S&Q) mode allows shooters to capture 4K video at specified steps between 1-120 fps and Full HD between 1-240 fps, depending on the format. These settings will allow you to slow down action as well as speed up a slow-moving scene.
  • S-Cinetone can be used to deliver distinct colors and healthy-looking skin tone rendering that is based on technology from the professional Cinema Line cameras, such as the VENICE. This color profile offers natural mid-tones, soft colors, and especially well-controlled highlights.
  • The S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine Gamma Curves allow for more than 14 stops of dynamic range and for increased post-production flexibility, including matching video from other Sony Cinema Line cameras.
  • Creative Looks can be baked into the recorded footage to create a specific mood during recording and minimize the need for editing.
  • User-created LUTs and presets can be set for accurately monitoring footage or previewing a specific look during shooting and can be applied to the camera's monitor, EVF, or HDMI output.
  • The camera supports instant time-lapse settings with framerate, recording, light, and interval customization.
AI-Powered Autofocus and Image Stabilization
The Sony a6700's AI Processing Unit brings a host of enhanced capabilities to the camera's autofocus and image stabilization systems, ensuring smooth handling and clarity no matter the shooting conditions. The camera's 759 phase detection points in stills mode and 495 points in video mode, covering 93% of the image area, are enhanced with AI-powered subject recognition performance and real-time tracking. Other autofocus features include focus bracketing in up to 299 images with sequentially-shifted focus points, focus accuracy in low light down to EV -3.0, focus breathing compensation, autofocus assist, focus mapping, and focus peaking during autofocus.
Vlog-Friendly AI-Enhanced Framing
Additionally, the AI Processing Unit recognizes and tracks subjects when recording video, seamlessly auto-cropping to maintain the subject in a prominent position in the frame and lending ease to otherwise difficult camerawork. This tracking can be custom located within the frame and adjusted for speed and sensitivity, all at the touch of a finger.
Image Stabilization
The camera's pixel-level 5-axis optical image stabilization system, which compensates for five different types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of stills and video, is algorithmically optimized for precision detection and control down to a single pixel. The AI Processing Unit also improves communication between the body and the lens, providing more stable framing before shooting. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.
Advanced Rendering
For stills-shooters, the a6700 offers a wide range of color renderings and compressions for optimal image quality and storage management, led by the introduction of the High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format, available here in 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 options. Users also have the choice between Compressed and Lossless Compressed options when shooting raw. The AI Processing Unit also helps to achieve better exposure results in Auto mode, achieving a 20% increase in reliability over the a6600 according to manufacturer testing, with applicable algorithmic adjustments made for skin tone, backlit situations, and white balance. The same Creative Looks presets available in video are also available when shooting stills, allowing additionally for user-defined configurations with eight adjustable parameters. For optimal viewing of stills when tethered to select monitors and televisions, the a6700 now offers a stills-designed Hybrid Log-Gamma mode that delivers accurate dynamic range in 10-bit HEIF format.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • The introduction of a front command dial puts an added level of control and speed at the tip of your forefinger and ensures that you won't be all thumbs at the moment of peak action.
  • Use the camera's USB output function with UVC/UAC control via a computer for streaming applications and broadcasts with 4K video at 15 or 30 fps or full HD at 30 or 60 fps.
  • Built-in 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi allows communication on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites.
  • The camera can connect to the Creators' Cloud central cloud platform using the Creators app for sharing and storing media, editing in the cloud, and collaboration tools. The phone can also be used as a camera remote and to monitor battery power and storage levels.
  • Integrated 3.5mm headphone and microphone ports afford greater control over audio during video recording. The Multi-Interface Shoe also functions as a digital audio interface.
  • The XGA Tru-Finder 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a bright, high-resolution, 1.07x magnification means for eye-level monitoring and sports and a dedicated 120 fps mode for smoother viewing when tracking moving subjects.
  • The side-opening, vari-angle 3.0" 1.03m-dot LCD touchscreen works from high, low, and front-facing angles.
  • Accepts the high-capacity Z battery rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which provides approximately 570 stills/120 minutes of video recording per charge when using the LCD screen.
  • In addition to the battery, the a6700 can also be powered via a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery. This connection can also be used to charge the battery.
  • Robust magnesium alloy body offers a durable profile and incorporates dust and moisture seals to protect against harsh environments.
  • A new grip design enhances handling and stability for long shooting sessions and facilitates access to the main control buttons and dials.

Sony A6700 Reviews

SONY A6700 IS A GREAT CAMERA

By James

I've owed several Sony video and stills cameras over the years. While the Sony 'menu system' is a bit daughting at first, it makes sense after you work with it for awhile. The good news, other Sony video/stills 'menus' are similar, so if you go with other Sony products you should have no issues with the 'menu'. I haven't gotten out to use this much, but the few images I've taken have been very good. This camera is strictly for casual family images. I know it's blasphemy, but my still images are Jpegs and my videos are done in Picture Profile (PP) 11, i.e., S-Cinetone video straight from the camera no Post color grading. I have 'tweaked' the settings a little which makes the video a little more punchy. Sony cameras are well known to have a somewhat 'flat' look straight from the camera. I've been using it with the Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. I like the perspective it gives. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase.

Upgrade of a6300

My primary goal is recording my friends as we attend events, travel, etc. Secondary is wildlife. The image stabilization when indoors (without using flash) is critical. My high school camera was an srt-101. I've used Canon and Nikon gear and the sweet spot for me of performance and cost has almost always been Sony gear. I've a fast internet connection at home but pairing with an iPhone 14 pro max was not as straight forward as I'd hoped.

Buggy, format issues, boring

Issues with videos writing to card, color streaks in my videos, XAVC is less convenient to work with than regular video files, cant control auto exposure, wasn’t working with my Tamron 17-70mm, boring to use (not enough customizations compared to Fuji and Panasonic cameras) Returned it. Will be going back to Panasonic or Fuji.

Feels like a gift even though I paid for it

I've been using Sony's E mount since the NEX-5N and my most recent E mount camera before this was the a6100. As the years went by and watching full frame body after full frame body come out, I started to wonder if Sony had abandoned the APS-C format. I'm a person who doesn't need the benefits of full frame and would rather shoot APS-C due to its smaller size and cost. And so those of us who have invested in APS-C lenses over the years finally get the latest Sony autofocus, fully articulating screen, a front dial, modern sensor, updated menus, responsive body and a couple extra megapixels. The autofocus alone is worth the upgrade for me. I've only used the camera a couple of times so far so this is my first impression and I don't have a lot of specific things to say. Also, while Lightroom's color profile for my a6100 was not good and requires lots of color tweaks to even get to acceptable, I'm happy to report that raw files from the a6700 look great in Lightroom Classic by default and closely match Sony's jpeg color rendering. This body has even made some of my older lenses more useable again. I had been having problems with my Sigma 30mm not wanting to focus, but it seems to work just fine with this body. One more comment, in case anyone at Sony is reading this. I recently got my hands on an old NEX-5N again after many years and it reminded me of how small Sony originally intended to make cameras. All of Sony's modern cameras are giants compared to the original and I know it's because they also need to be video cameras, but here's a crazy idea for you... make a photo-only NEX-5N mark 2 with a 26 megapixel APS-C sensor and any other modern tech you can get in there. I promise they'll sell like hotcakes! Especially if you can make a new pancake lens or two.

Favorite Multitool

My primary is not a Sony but this is my new every day camera, webcam and multitool. I purchased it for the form factor, its small and discrete. It'll not draw a lot of attention during street and its light enough I can hang a small rig clamp off a shelf above my PC and use it as a webcam from that. I love it and carry it with me almost as much as I carry my phone.

I got the 6700 as soon as it was possible. It IS a BIG step up from the 6300. I've used in street photography and in low light situation (aperture priority) I have clear no shake images 1/10sec. What a surprise Using the 24-70 there is a noticeable step up in sharpness of image form the 6300. The eye autofocus knocks it out of the park when I was shooting dogs at the market. I even got clear usable pic just holding the camera on my chest and point at walking subject. The auto focus is amazing.

This WILL be Sony's APS-C flagship

This review is coming from someone who has only ever used Sony APS-C, upgrading from the a6400. If you're coming from any of the previous Sony APS-C cameras, this will be generations ahead. Without getting into any of the specs, I love having the ability to shoot high quality video now. Photos are crisp and operating the camera is just as easy, if not easier. The ergonomics from the grip size to dial access is hugely improved. I prefer a bit of a bigger body. Keep in mind, the APS-C lenses will still be cheaper and typically smaller, so I'd still consider this to be a lightweight option. All in all, a great option if you wanted to get into video or are looking for a solid hybrid camera. AND it's APS-C. Size and function with little compromise.

I own a full frame Sony A7IV and I was looking for a second camera, now some times for travels the A6700 will be my primary camera, the difference in weight and size is notable and the difference en quality for landscape is minimal

Asked by: Vitor
If the date and time setting is canceled halfway, the setting screen for the date and time appears every time you turn on the camera. The built-in clock of the camera may exhibit time errors. Adjust the time at regular intervals. See page 86 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/1033189.pdf This camera has an internal rechargeable backup battery for maintaining the date and time and other settings regardless of whether the power is turned on or off, or whether the battery pack is charged or discharged. To charge the internal backup battery, insert a charged battery pack into the camera, and leave the product for 24 hours or more with the power turned off. If the clock resets every time the battery pack is charged, the internal rechargeable backup battery may be worn out. Consult your service facility. For further details see page 86 of the manual here... https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/1033189.pdf

This Tamron 17-70 is a great option. Very sharp and has a 2.8 aperture. Works for video and photo. It is compatible with the Sony a6700 Mirrorless Camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1609642-REG
