The 16-stop, 43mm Solar ND Filter from Tiffen is a solid ND filter with a 65,536x filter factor that provides an 16-stop exposure reduction. Its 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed while reducing the risk of overexposure. This means you can capture more detailed solar images than might be possible under normal conditions. By also limiting IR and UV light this filter helps ensure color-neutral images, and its multi-layer coating reduces glare.

Warning: Viewing the Sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage, blindness, and equipment damage. This product protects your camera and allows for safe solar photography only; it is not ISO 12312-2 compliant and therefore not safe for direct viewing of the Sun. Always use approved ISO 12312-2 certified safety glasses when viewing the Sun directly. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder.

The 16-stop, 43mm Solar ND Filter from Tiffen is a solid ND filter with a 65,536x filter factor that provides an 16-stop exposure reduction. Its 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed while reducing the risk of overexposure. This means you can capture more detailed solar images than might be possible under normal conditions. By also limiting IR and UV light this filter helps ensure color-neutral images, and its multi-layer coating reduces glare.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (46mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) will fit in the drop in slot of the Sigma 300-800mm lens. However, a solar filter needs to be placed on the front of a lens in order to prevent damage to the lens or camera. Does this filter also act as a UV/IR cut filter? Would it be beneficial to get a separate UV/IR cut filter as well?

Lawrence, your answer seems to cast doubt the product description, which states "This filter limits IR and UV light, ensuring color-neutral images, and reduces glare with its multi-layer coating.". If it doesn't cur IR/UV, but just filters, does it limit enough IR and UV light in order to continuously take pictures of the sun for 2-3 hours, without having any of our equipment melt?

No, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (67mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 compliant and therefore not safe for direct viewing of the Sun. The filter, like most on the market, will protect your camera and allows for safe solar photography only. It's advised that you still wear protective eyewear.
