Kodak Super 8 Film Camera Overview

Unleash Your Creativity
Super 8 is back! Kodak has spent years developing a modern film movie camera and the result of all that work is the Super 8 Camera. Blending modern design and conveniences with analog filmmaking, this Super 8 Camera is a brilliant revival of the classic moviemaking aesthetic.
Extended Gate Super 8 Format
While developing a modern Super 8 system, Kodak was able to create a method to make even more use of the film. This camera uses what Kodak calls Extended Gate Super 8 format to capture an area approximately 11% larger than traditional Super 8 film. Measuring 4.2 x 6.3 mm, it provides a slightly taller 1:1.5 aspect ratio that is more flexible when intercutting with other formats.
C Lens Mount
Filmmakers will be able to use a wide range of lenses thanks to the use of the standard C mount on the Super 8 Camera. It comes with a 6mm f/1.2 lens that will provide a 35mm equivalent field of view of ~35mm. This can be easily swapped out with other standard C-mount lenses. Users can use adapters to work with a range of other lenses though when using these lenses you should consider the format's crop factor of approximately 5.7x.
Digital Viewfinder
A modern camera comes with modern conveniences. Among the major inclusions of the Super 8 Camera's feature list is a large, 4" articulating LCD that functions as a viewfinder with through-the-lens preview during shooting. The display shows many current settings alongside a preview of the image, including:
  • Film Counter in feet
  • Scene Counter
  • Cartridge Number
  • Film Type
  • Frame Rate
  • Battery Status
  • Light Meter
  • Volume Meter
  • Audio Input Type
  • SD Card
In addition to the camera's LCD, there is a micro-HDMI port that can send a video feed out to any compatible monitor or display.
Advanced Audio Recording
While the camera won't record audio directly to the film stock, the Super 8 Camera will offer internal audio recording to an SD card. Kodak has also designed the camera to offer Crystal Sync at 24 and 25 fps so that when the audio is synced in post it will match the footage. To record audio you'll need to use either the 3.5mm line in or 3.5mm mic in. You can also monitor the audio using meters on the LCD and via the 3.5mm headphone out port. These audio files will be saved to an SD card in the .wav format.
Modern Design and Ergonomics
While the Super 8 Camera is a newly developed product, the design references the look and feel of traditional Super 8 systems. It has been optimized for current times and has more intuitive functionality.

For ergonomics, the camera features a top handle with an integrated run button to activate shooting. A detachable pistol grip with run button is also included for a classic eye-level shooting experience.

Powering the camera is a removable Li-ion battery pack that'll keep the camera running for approximately 10 film cartridges, totaling about 36,000 frames. The battery can be charged by plugging the camera into the included USB power adapter and using a micro-USB cable. It'll fully charge the pack in about 3.5 hours.
Super 8 Film Types
Everything is new about the Super 8 Camera except for the film. This camera will take Kodak's standard Super 8 film cartridges with legendary stocks that include VISION 3, EKTACHROME, and TRI-X. Each cartridge contains 50' of film, useful for capturing about 3 minutes of footage, depending on the frame rate selected.

Current film options include:
  • VISION3 50D / 7203: This is a daylight-balanced color negative film which offers the finest grain of any currently available film stock. Use an 80A filter for use in tungsten lighting and set EI to 125.
  • VISION3 200T / 7213: This is a tungsten-balanced color negative film that is balanced between sensitivity and grain. It is optimized for indoor and high-contrast scenes with increased highlight latitude and reduced grain in shadows. Use an 85 filter for use in daylight and set EI to 125.
  • VISION3 500T / 7219: This is a tungsten-balanced color negative film with a high speed and excellent shadow latitude. Use an 85 filter for use in daylight and set EI to 320.
  • TRI-X 7266: This is a black-and-white reversal film suitable for interior use and artificial light as well as outdoors in natural daylight. It is designed to create an image with excellent tonal gradation and sharpness. Under tungsten lighting this film has a rated EI of 320 and under daylight it has a rated EI of 200.
  • EKTACHROME 100D: This is a daylight-balanced color reversal film with moderate contrast, good saturation, and a very fine grain. Use an 80A filter for use in tungsten lighting and set EI to 25.

Is the HDMI signal able to be used by a external recorder ?
Asked by: ROSS
You're looking off the glass, at the gate, like a traditional video assist on a 16 or 35. One could record out of the HDMI, or playback, or even a "pre-edit" while you are waiting for your film to come back.

Is there an attachment that you can add to this camera in order to add a Smallrig mount to attach an external monitor? Or any attachment that would be able to be attached to this camera to have an external monitor?
Asked by: Andre
Yes, the Kodak Super 8 Camera does have a traditional 1 x 1/4"-20 female on the bottom. You could use a L-Shaped bracket with a cold shoe mount like the CAMVATE L-Shaped Handle with Cold Shoe for DJI Ronin-S & Zhiyun Crane Gimbals: https://bit.ly/3OpcZdN and attach any cold shoe monitor mount to it.

It’s it able to record digital and analogue? And if there’s so, can it make it by separeted ways? Thanks
Asked by: Javier
In camera, it is made to film on 8mm film. The data card is to record the audio, and to handle any future firmware updates. That being said, there is a HDMi out on the back, one could plug in a record off the feed digitally via that. You would be taking the image all of the mirror at the gate, so it's not a pristine image, like in the film. But if you were filming a large project and wanted to do a pre-edit while waiting on your film to develop that would be a useful use of something like that.

Currently, Kodak has yet to release further information on the Kodak Super 8 Camera, aside from what is available on this product page and the manufacturer's official website. I would recommend keeping a close eye on the camera for future updates.
