Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Overview

Lightweight, Precise & Bright
The lightest in its class and the brightest in Sigma's 50mm prime lineup, the 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E-mount cameras is a well-designed lens for everyday use. Driven by Sigma's dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motors, this lens delivers quiet and high-speed performance. Impressively Smooth Bokeh
Sporting a f/1.2 maximum aperture, this 50mm prime lens provides rich and beautiful bokeh. Not only is this a massive benefit for creating more artistic and flattering imagery, but it allows you the ability to capture detailed images in harsh lighting conditions.

This lens's rounded 13-blade diaphragm is a first for Sigma and maintains a circular shape, helping create smooth and round bokeh even when stopped down.

Exceptional Build
Constructed with convenience in mind, the 50mm f/1.2 is equipped with multiple functions to assist you while shooting. An AFL button is available for maintaining focus on a single distance. Certain camera models allow for customizing the AFL's function.

The dust- and splash-resistant lens structure combined with the front lens element's water and oil-repellent coating create a durable overall lens that's reliable in the field.

The aperture ring is lockable and can be set to click/de-click depending on your preference.

Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Reviews

Amazing lens!

I am writing this mostly for anyone debating between the Sigma 50/1.2 and the S Pro 50mm. I know it’s a subjective decision and I am sure you can’t go wrong with either choice. Since I did not have the ability to go into the camera store to test these two lenses out myself in person, I really relied on the my previous experience with both brands and the endless youtube videos, reddit comments and very short reviews with usually no real examples given other than walking down the street. I have the Sigma 14-24 Art, 40/1.4 & 85/1.4 Art lenses as well as the S Pro 24-70 and S Pro 70-200 and the Lumix 10-25 & 25-50/1.7 lenses. They are all excellent and I have not had any issues with any of these under heavy use over the last 5 years. The L mount 50mm is really the last lens I needed to complete my kit and I will say that I absolutely wanted to buy the S Pro 50mm. Everyone who has used the S Pro is clearly mesmerized by the results. I was not concerned about the weight of it. I love the focus clutch and the aperture ring makes perfect sense that it locks to auto at F1.4 on the ring and not F16. I completely believe the hype about the quality of images that this lens produces.  While there are countless reviews of both the Sigma 50/1.2 & the S Pro, I actually could not  find one actually comparing them together in the same test or review.  So, I really needed to search to see actual samples from the 1.2 lens and those are extremely impressive. While many criticize the CA of the Sigma 1.4, I honestly could not find any CA examples of that with the 1.2 lens. After extremely careful consideration I did opt for the Sigma for the following reasons: PROS · 13 diaphragm blades and its amazing bokeh.  · Tack sharp at its 1.2 aperture · 1.2 is a fun shooting option to have · Switchable clicked & de-clicked aperture ring · Love the programmable button on the lens · Dual HLA motors · Made in Japan and inspected for QC · The newness of its design and innovation · Cost in comparison to the S Pro · Weight as compared to the S Pro · Sigma customer service has always been awesome with me.   CONS ·      I do not love that the aperture ring locks at F16 into auto mode. This aspect does not make sense to me as I will constantly be shooting at F1.2 and do not need or want to close the lens down to switch to A mode. Sigma should make the directionality of its lens’ rotations to coordinate with the L Mount lens systems, not the Canon systems. ·      The lens probably needs a lock button for transporting the lens as the internal mechanisms slide around when powered off. What convinced me to not just “go for it” with  the S PRO 50mm lens · It’s a 6 year amazing, best-in-class design, but I wish they had incorporated some improvements to the lens of the years, especially the ones that are available on their other newer lenses.  · The clicked aperture was one deal -breaker for me for video work. Their newer 10-25 & 25-50 lenses are de-clickable and excellent. That probably could have been a simple refinement. A programmable button like on the 70-200 would be of great use as well. · I bought the 70-200 S Pro after being told by Panasonic sales that the lens was made in Japan. It is not. There seems to be a similar confusion with this lens. It is also made in China. · Countless reported comments of QC issues with the lens. Too many people reported they had to try 3 lenses to get a good one. I do not have time for that. · The white dot/mold issue inside the lens that many have reported online with pictures. There are endless threads about this issue on dpreview. While I have not personally had this issue with my S Pro lenses, I did not want to roll the dice with this potential issue. · Cost, even on sale. · Panasonic’s warranty registration website is slow & archaic. Since purchasing the lens, I have done some comparison shots with my 2 S PRO zoom lenses and they really are indistinguishable to the Sigma 50/1.2 in terms of color & contrast.
