Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Overview

  • 1Description

A flexible zoom distinguished by its relatively lightweight and compact design, the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM is a Canon L-series optic spanning a useful portrait-length to medium telephoto range. The constant f/4 maximum aperture allows you to maintain a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the sleeker form factor when compared to other 70-200mm lenses. In regard to its optical performance, this lens employs one fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion elements, which work in concert to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity and color accuracy. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in harsh lighting. Complementing the optical attributes, this lens also features a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism for quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
One fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 3.9'-infinity or 9.8'-infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional rotating tripod collar is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Reviews

EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 2359.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Every Cent I purchased this lens as a first step in upgrading all my glass to L series. It is undoubtedly amazing and now has me addicted. Is it as good in low light as the f4 IS or f2.8? No. But pair it with a body that handles high ISOs well and you're golden. You need to think hard about the benefits of the 70-200mm counterparts and whether or not the benefits match your needs and bank account. It is UNBELIEVABLY sharp throughtout the whole f stop range and zoom range. Solid build, amazing mechanics, quick-to-focus, the list is endless. I would wholly recommend this be a part of any Canon enthusiasts line-up, beginner to professional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never fails to impress I've owned this lens for about eight years and have used it for wedding photography, portraits and wildlife (with 2x extender). I've never been disappointed. It's ultra-sharp like a prime lens, even at the zoom extremes. For those who have never used an f/2.8 lens the extra 1-2 stops really make the difference in many situations. I've wondered what it would be like to upgrade to the IS version of this lens but I've never seriously been tempted as this is such a fabulous lens in its own right. It's also a bit of a 'backstage pass' - when you carry this lens with hood attached, people are so in awe they let you go wherever you want!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happiness in a tube I actually have owned both the IS and NON IS. I purchased the IS version first actually and ended using the IS probably less than ten percent of the time this lens was mounted on my camera. So when my IS version fell down the Grand Canyon, *FREAK* I opted for the non IS version as I rarely used IS anyway. As others have noted, I noticed a marginal increase in sharpness in the non IS version as there are less optical elements involved. Basically, I'm going to tell you what to do. Buy the non IS version, take the left over cash you saved and buy the 85mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 primes. Then you'll be in real good shape ;) - Caleb

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy with this lens! I just got home from using this lens at the beach.? I attach the Canon? Extender EF 2X to it.? Then I have a 400mm lens.? It is so fantastic for capturing closeups of waves, the sunset going over Catalina Island and more like seabirds.? I have to switch it to manual focus when capturing waves turning over because they move so fast.? The automatic focus goes slow and blurry most of the time.? You have to have something sharp to focus on with automatic on a 2X Extender.? Plus it gets only f8, not f4 like the 24-105mm lens I have. So it takes practice to get the timing of a wave just right and focus. But the images I do get right are awesome!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great first "L" lens I have had this lens for over 6 months and have taken a few thousands pics so far. First, this is not a small lens and does not have IS. So, unless it is really bright (plenty of lighting) then a tripod is a must. However, it is "L" series glass and there just isn't anything like it. Hand held in full sunlight I got some exceptional pics. Also, with a monopod I was able to get some really good action shots of softball games. All in all, if you have the money get the IS version (or better yet get the f2.8 IS version) but if you are on a budget like me, this is a great addition to your arsenal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I made the choice I decided on this lens after much testing of lenses at my local camera store. I decided on this one, rather than the IS version to keep the cost down. I knew going in that a tripod or monopod would be necessary if shutter speeds were going to be slow. I didn't anticipate that being a problem for me given the type of pictures I intended to take with this lens, but I was just blown away by the quality of the results. The first place I used it was at the National Zoo in DC - WOW, that's all I can say. Then I used it to shoot a nephew's Little League game. Shooting wide open (f/4) at 200mm enabled me to isolate the players against a softened, fuzzy background and everyone went bonkers over the shots. Needless to say I am very, very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon's Best 70-200mm Lens I also own the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. However, the above lens though excellent is too heavy. After reading the positive reviews on EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens by Canon, I decided to buy this one as well. I primarily shoot landscapes, so the difference in f stop from 2.8 to 4.0 is not significant for me, since I never shoot below f/8 or f/11. I found this lens to be very light, extremely sharp even at the corners and having a great picture quality. Overall very happy at making the switch to the lighter, sharper and price wise less expensive (as opposed to the 2.8 Mark 2) lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small, Light, Stable, SHARP!! Was up between the f2.8 IS and this lens. I had used the Canon f2.8 IS quite a bit, and I owned the Sigma f2.8 (Sold soon before purchasing this lens). Tried a friend's Canon f4 IS on a trip to the mountains in Colorado and I was sold. I have to do a lot of low light shooting, and I thought I needed the f2.8 IS. Not so. The 5D mk II high ISO/low noise level in combination with this lens makes that possible. Small size makes this much more packable than any f2.8 IS. Get the Canon collar if you need one. *knock offs are not very smooth on this lens. Collar should be included with any 70-200mm lens. Other than that, can't say enough good things about this glass!

    question

Does this Lens come with a USA warranty?
    Asked by: Anonymous
In situations where B&H offers both a USA and an imported version of a product, we label each version clearly and explicitly. If a product does not have an indication either way, it is understood to be by default a USA product. In situations where only a USA version is offered it will not be labeled USA. This is a Canon USA lens.
