Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Reviews

I'm not sure I'm qualified to review this lens

I have done 1x, 2x, and 2.5x macro using various lenses but macro is by no means my main photography pursuit. From what I've used of this lens, it is a masterpiece of work. For some reason, the image of the lens makes me expect it to be rather small. It isn't. The way the lens operates is at full 5X, it is roughly triple the length at 1x. I have the RF to EF adapter using it on a Canon EOS R5 and it operates fine.

Thank you

One of a kind...takes some work getting used to, but worth it. You will never go back to all the extenders and reverse lens adapters.

I have been doing a lot of macro work lately with my 100mm Canon lens and wanted to expand with a lens that would get me closer. After a bit of a learning curve on how the lens operates it has a favorite. Images are quite sharp.

This is my second MP-E 65mm. The first one finally died after nine years of almost daily use. I use it to photograph samples of sand. It has a built in groove for Canon's two macro flashes - the ring lite MR-14EXII, and the twin lite MT-24EX. I use the ring lite almost exclusively. Focusing is primitive with moving the camera back and forth. You definitely need a tripod and rail attachment to get accurate focus. The only negative I experienced with the lens was that as it aged, I could not use twin light in a vertical position because it's weight would cause the magnification to change. That is not a problem when the lens is new. It probably would never be a problem if the lens was used horizontally.

I am an insect taxonomist so I do a lot of macro photography with a rail system. This is the best lens for this type of work. It is a manual focus lens which is exactly what I need. Canon always makes high quality lenses so there is never an issue with anything they make.

This is the best ultra macro lens on the market; the 1:1 to 5:1 gives an amazing range for zooming in on your subject. Using this with the MT-26 EX RT flash gives fantastic results. Once you get used to the size and weight of the lens, you can capture stunning photos!

MP-E 65mm to the rescue.

So I must say I have had experience shooting macro photography, focus stacking & magnification at 2:1, 3:1 etc from reverse rings on wide angle lenses before buying this baby. I went ahead & made the investment after learning about all the pros & cons. For me I was fully prepared to buy a electronic rail & software to use to control the camera via my laptop which makes its all work efficiently. Great lens I must say. I had been shooting with Canon's L lens 24-70mm which cost $1800 and the quality is right there with the glass used in this lens. I'm all in on Macro photography & it's a great investment but without the right accessories you won't be able to optimize the full use of this lens.

question

If i use this lens on a Nikon d800e body with the fovslxeosnik adapter will i be able to adjust the aperture?

The FotodioX Vizelex Canon EOS Lens to Nikon Camera Adapter with Macro B&H # FOVSLXEOSNIK does not pass electronic signals so no aperture adjustment is possible.

question

Can I adapt this lens to a Nikon F mount with a converter like the Fotodiox mount adapter?
Asked by: Gene W.
The lens was designed to allow a Canon body to control the aperture electronically. To use the lens on any other body, you need a mount adapter with an integrated iris for manually controlling aperture.

can this lens fit to Sony NEXFS700R 4K Super 35mm Exmor CMOS ?

This is an EF Mount lens, while the FS700 has a Sony E-Mount. To use this lens with the FS700 you will need a Canon EF Lens to Sony E-Mount Adapter, such as B&H # MEMBEFEBT5 from Metabones. https://bhpho.to/2orhaY6

Is canon MP-E65mm USA works well in Indian climate also or there is any problem? please inform the right answer.
Asked by: Dr.Himangsu M.
The Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Lens just as well as any lens in most climates, but it is not weather-sealed. If too much humidity or rain builds up outside the lens it could leak inside it and cause moisture problems that a weather-sealed lens may not encounter.

question

I want to take Dental photos as well as general macro photos with high magnification(eg- flowers, insects). Can I use this lens for both? By dental photography, I mean to take the picture of whole set of teeth, not individual tooth.Or which is the better lens satisfying both(macro and 3:1 or 5:1 magnification)I have both full frame(5DmarkII) and crop frame sensors(canon 300D)
Asked by: Anonymous
Great answers above. You'd also want to have that set of teeth removed from your victim's mouth... Even the slightest movement on their part will result in an out of focus shot. Maybe if they weren't breathing... ;-)
