Viltrox AF 40mm f/2.5 Reviews

Very Satisfied with this Lower-Cost Option

My every-day lens is the Nikon Z 24-120/4S but I was looking for a prime lens as a lighter and more discreet single lens solution for street and travel photography. I tried various focal lengths by using gaffers tape on the zoom lens to fix it at 35, 40 and 50 mm and supplementing that with many You Tube reviews comparing these focal lengths. I decided that I was most comfortable at 40 mm. I wanted the flexibility of operating either in Autofocus or Full Manual mode and the metal mount and full electronic communication with the camera were also important to me. This limited my choices to very few candidates. I decided to purchase the lower cost Viltrox 40/2.5 based on some good reviews and I'm very satisfied with the lens. The lens seems very substantial for having a plastic body and, most importantly, I cannot fault the image quality throughout the aperture range (I do not pixel peep). I would have liked a hyperfocal scale on the lens but the Nikon Z6iii does have an electronic indicator in manual focus mode, which is workable. I would have also preferred a larger maximum f-stop for subject separation but was willing to sacrifice that for the entry-level price. This lens is my entry into the world of prime lens photography and I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons and exploring its potential.

Light and Compact

This has been my favorite focal length beginning with 35mm cameras, and this modern version suits my personal tradition. Although its compact, I withheld a full five-star rating only because its not a nearly flat pancake lens, which fiven its modest aperture seems to me could have been accomplished. I havent encountered any imaging problems that would prevent it being a fine general purpose normal lens. Its not easily proviked to flare, illumination is even enough at one stop down, and any minor distortion goes unnoticed. Build quality on a fly weight lens will never have that heavy duty feeling, but it doesnt wobble or make odd noises so it seems worth its modest price on that score.
