Onkyo TX-RZ30 Reviews

Excellent value for the money

I picked this up to replace my Denon AVR-1909 that died after 17 years of faithful service. I'd have loved to go with Denon again, but their closest competitor was both 2 years older cost several hundred dollars more. Read a couple highly positive pro reviews, including one that claimed Onkyo have fixed their notorious HDMI issues in this receiver & that it was their comeback vs. Denon, so I decided to pull the trigger for $999 at that time. Price is now $1199 at the time of this writing, likely due to tariffs which have made everything significantly more expensive. I also bought the the Dirac Live Bass Control (DLBC) add-on for $299, so the actual combined price was $1298. PRO: Dialogue reproduction is good enough to disable closed captions. DLBC software is well designed. Mobile app & web UI work well (the web UI exceptionally so). The web UI exposes every feature of the unit, down to calibration slots. DLBC allows for solid bass without shaking everything else in the house (though you can still get that effect if you want). Dirac Live's capability to edit target curves & upload custom ones makes your sound infinitely customizable. You can store 3 independent calibrations & switch among them. The styling isn't gaudy. Supports everything from Chromecast to Spotify to Roon to Tidal to Sonos to AirPlay, as well as every current AV spec. Remote is intuitive and not overwhelming (Denon could learn from this). Setup OSD is tasteful & forgiving. Thanks to the web UI, you pretty much never have to enter the OSD again if you don't want to. Firmware can be updated directly over the internet from the OSD, and there's an update notice feature so you don't have to manually check. The front controls and knobs are intuitive, which again is something Denon could learn from. Excellent music & video performance. CONS: Doesn't look as good as a Denon. LED display is low res & single line, showing only source & volume by default. I'd happily pay $200 (the cost of a low end Galaxy phone) for a full color LCD or OLED display. Dirac Live takes a couple days of reading, trial & error to understand & set up. That's not necessarily a bad thing as room correction is a very complicated science, but it's also much more work than Audyssey requires. On the plus side, DLBC definitely gives better results than Audyssey. Overall, I'd say Onkyo have a real winner here. Unless you need more power, zones, or inputs, it's the one to buy.

Great bang for your dollar!

I am more into traditional stereo HiFi audio, but wanted to upgrade an old AV receiver for our family room. Since I was going to use external amplification for the front channels (left, right), I did not care much about total power output, but focused on connectivity options (mainly line outputs for all channels), HDR10+, and ease of setup. The RZ30 ticked all these boxes, setup was easy using the control app, after updating the firmware I could connect to my Tidal account and am able to steam Dolby Atmos audio. I only had the time to perform a manual speaker level adjustment, but plan to go through the included Dirac calibration during the weekend. Image quality is amazing (both from streaming services and Ultra HD 4k Blu-rays), and audio output is excellent too (I amplify using a tube PrimaLuna pre and a Marantz power amplifier). All in all, both for stereo audio or for watching a movie using my 7.1.2 Atmos configuration, the Onkyo TX-RZ30 is a joy to use. At its price level, 100% recommended!
