Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Overview

A comprehensive and bright wide-angle zoom, the AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED from Nikon is a versatile lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and advanced design. The optical layout incorporates three aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements, which greatly reduce distortion and aberrations for a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and accurate rendering. A Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy in harsh lighting and backlit conditions. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor enables fast, near-silent autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to benefit both stills and video applications.

A wide-angle zoom designed for FX-format sensors, this 17-35mm lens can also be used with DX models where it provides a 25.5-52.5mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance and excellent light transmission throughout the zoom range.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

This is a gift. I've never used this specific focal length combo. Still, I'm sure that my nephew and new niece will enjoy it.

I bought this second one after my first one was damaged in a tornado. It is not light or compact but it is fast and produces excellent images. I use it often enough that I felt it was worth buying another.

Typical Nikon pro quality. A great addition to my Nikon collection.

Fantastic proven wide angle

This trusty proven lens has the benefit of a 77mm thread where I can use the same ND filter system used with my other lenses. My Nikon 14-24mmm has a very large dedicated filter system difficult to travel with. This lens has proven to have the same excellent quality and is solidly built. However, it does not have the same weather/water resistance as the newer lenses do. Very happy overall.

Bread and Butter

I've made my living with this lens since switching to Nikon in 2007. Tack sharp, fast 2.8 and reliable. I shoot events in dark ballrooms so 2.8 is necessary. And it's built like a tank.

The best Nikon lens

For me, it is the best lens produced by Nikon. VERY fast, quiet and sharp focus. Since Nikon started production, it has maintained the same quality and design.

Unacceptable edge distortion

I bought this lens for night photography and was shocked at how much distortion there was around the edges wide open at 17mm. Photos unusable. I sold it and bought a much less expensive Nikon 20mm prime, problem (mostly) solved. Except it's not quite wide enough, so only Nikon alternative is the 14-24mm, but what a tank!

If you like wide & bright lens

Once you go wide you can never go back? Well, at least that's how I feel about this lens. I used to love 20-35, so this was a natural progression towards the wider end of the spectrum. It gives that wow effect when I point it to the sky, nature, and anything else that's worth exaggerating perspectives. However it will not make a boring scenery any better. It weighs a bit more and take up more space in the camera bag. But it's one of the 2~3 lens that Is wasn't around. Now that it more affordable, there's no reason not to get it. The VibrationReduction feature isn't as crucial for wide angle. Also this lens is fully compatible with older SLR because it still conveniently has its aperture ring.
