Tiffen Ultra Pol Overview

Tiffen's Ultra Polarizers polarize light "a little more" than regular polarizers.

Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

This filter is glass and measures 100 x 140mm (4 x 5.65") x 4mm thick.

NOTE:  Linear polarizers are used with most video and manual focus photo cameras. They are not recommended for auto-focus SLR cameras. Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems).

You would need a holder that will take this size filter. The exact holder depends in part on the lens you are using.

What is the difference between Ultra Pol Circular vs Ultra pol LINEAR? Which one will work best in my matte Shape-2 4x4 case and with my Sony A7SII?

If you are also using a variable ND on your camera and want to use a polariser as well, you definitely need a circular one as a linear polariser will cause a colour shift as you rotate it.

question

What is the differences between this model and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/398871-REG/Schneider_68013038_138_mm_True_Linear_Polarizing.htmlIt seems like its just different descriptions but the same product. The only noticeable difference is a 10 year warranty on the more expensive model. What exactly does this cover? Does it cover it breaking?

Basically, there are two types of Polarizing filters; Linear and Circular. Linear are used for manual focusing as they can confuse AF sensors. Circular filters are designed for AF lenses and cameras but can be used on manual focus cameras as well. For more details on the two, please see: http://bhpho.to/MF21zoThe Schneider 138mm True-Linear Polarizing Glass filter is optimized for motion picture and television cameras. Having an extinction ratio of ER 374, the Schneider True-Pol is 12-times more effective than other polarizing filters. The 138mm Circular Ultra Polarizing Filter from Tiffen is a similar filter yielding a more intense look to your images and is designed for AF cameras. Because of manufacturing differences, circular polarizing filters cost more than comparable linear filters. Both filters come with ten year warranties that cover manufacturing or workmanship defects.

Was this made for film or digital? Do you have to angle it slightly for digital?
Asked by: s
The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Ultra Pol Linear Polarizer Filter, being a linear polarizer, is not good for digital photography. For digital photography, you would want to use a circular polarizing filter. Here is a link to the circular polarizing filter options in the 4 x 5.65" size: https://bhpho.to/4dOpbz9.

question

What is the size of this filter?
Asked by: Bin L.
Series 9 filters by Tiffen are a unique filter system once popular with older lens and camera design. Requiring a Series 9 adapter ring, this system allows you to use one standard size filter (Series 9) on many lens sizes. Series 9 filters, although screw-on style, require a bit more work to set up. The glass filter drops into the adapter ring and is held securely in place with the included retaining ring (adapter ring sold separately). Series 9 filters have no threads. Although these filters are no longer as popular as they used to be, they allow the use of filters for harder to fit lenses, a common problem with older camera lenses.

question

The description on this CPL makes a point of specifying that its non-coated . Is that supposed to be a good thing? Aren't multi-coated filters better at controlling reflections than non-coated filters? Since this filter is clearly aimed at professionals and considering its price, shouldn't it be coated?
Asked by: Claude
Claude, the advantage is you are not paying for multi-coating which is not necessary.
