OM SYSTEM OM-3 Reviews

OM-Fun

Look and Feel: Build is excellent, dials and buttons feel premium. The shutter button has little play and provides positive, tactile feedback. The mechanical shutter is very well dampened. Gone is the metallic sound of the PEN-F, replaced by a quieter more subdued sound. The body form and feel is so much like the original OM film cameras.  Viewing: The EVF is bright, clear and colors are rich with good contrast. Refresh and lag are very good. The eye point is comfortable and I can see all four corners of the panel with my glasses on. The eye cup is sufficiently soft without the play my OM-5 has. The rear screen is really bright, clear and stands up well to sunlight. It is noticeably more detailed than the OM-5 screen (1M dot vs 1.6M dot). ProCap: ProCap mode feels like the OM1mkII which is to say, excellent. With the earlier implementations of ProCap (EM1mkII, III, X) there is stuttering, slow frame rate in the EVF and lag that tarnish the experience. With the OM1mkII and OM-3, ProCap feels seamless – like shooting in SH2 mode. IBIS: Identical in my hands to the OM-5. The movement indicator is handy – you can toggle it on/off. With wide angle lenses I am shooting 2s routinely and sometimes 4s when conditions are mild or when using Sync-IS. At 50mm FoV, 1s shots handheld look very good. Video stabilization also very good, including digital stabilization. CP Button: I suppose, as a company, if you’re going to hang your hat on computational photography then put it right out in front on its own dedicated button. You can always assign the button to something else if you prefer, and I do for things like birds in flight (C3). However, for my landscape preset for example (C1), I rather like the CP features available with a dedicated button. A single press of the button engages your last used CP mode. Holding the CP button and scrolling the front wheel allows you to move between any available CP mode. Color Profiles: Color profiles are where things really get fun. If you liked the PEN-F color wheel and custom profiles you are in for a treat. The default modes look something like below. Profiles 1-3 are also found on the PEN-F. With the OM-3, you get a 4th color profile slot and 4th mono profile slot. Autofocus: Feels identical to the OM-1mkII in speed and accuracy. Gram for gram this is the best AF I have ever experienced in a camera this small. Animal detect is great for pet portraits, trips to the zoo, gardens and parks. Bird detect also works okay for insects, only struggles to determine which end is a head sometimes. Power: Battery life is the best of any single battery camera I own. With quick sleep I am charging it once a week. Just seems to last forever. The reason I mention power is the OM-3 is a blast to experiment with. Whether it be the computational modes or the color profiles, I find myself enjoying the moment while experimenting with different in camera possibilities. This approach takes its toll in battery life on most cameras but it’s not an issue with the OM-3. Play all you want and you still have battery to spare.  Other: What else…menu’s are the same as the OM-1mkII which includes more touch-screen control than the OM-1. Makes it a little quicker to jump around. Pairs really quickly to OI Share and the live view mode has very little delay. The tally light on the front is a nice touch for video and vlogging. What’s Missing?: The ability to custom name color profiles and store them in camera. WB shifts would ideally be locked to a custom profile. Currently these are unlinked such that dialing in a WB shift applies to every color profile the same way. Compatibility with the RM-WR1! What happened there? Conclusion: The OM-3 is a photographer’s camera. The kind of camera that begs to be carried everywhere. It lets you explore creatively without worrying about missing the shot or running out of battery. It’s the fun factor of the PEN-F with the performance and advanced features of the OM-1. It’s a camera built for enjoyment and on that front, it succeeds with confidence.

This camera has excellent continuous auto focus which is all I cared about. The stabilization with these cameras have always been fantastic and this one is no exception. The all metal body feels great to hold. The computational nd filters work really well. I would have preferred real glass. But it dues the job well. All in all a fantastic camera. I love it.

Are high resolution images also 14 bit?
Asked by: mark
High resolution images are not inherently 14-bit. The bit depth of an image is independent of its resolution. High resolution images can be 8-bit, 12-bit, 14-bit, 16-bit or even higher, depending on the camera's capabilities and settings.

Will my old OM-1 lenses fit and be used with this camera?
Asked by: David
Thank you to Lucia, Charles, and Matt! Yes, just for clarity, the lenses to which I was referencing are the "old" OM. type from the 1970s and early 1980s (later-acquired lenses). It's good to know that there are adapters, and I will definitely look for them, now with your help. Thank you again!!!
