OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm f/4 PRO Lens

Covering a useful and familiar range with a svelte form factor, the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm f/4 PRO is a 24-90mm-equivalent zoom for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Distinguished by its f/4 constant maximum aperture, this lens strikes a balance between a bright design and a highly compact design to suit its use in everyday situations. Myriad specialized elements are incorporated into the optical design, which helps to suppress spherical aberrations, color fringing, and distortion in order to produce sharp, color-accurate imagery. A ZERO coating is also featured, which controls flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions. Complementing the optics is a Movie & Still Compatible autofocus system, which achieves fast, smooth, and silent focusing performance, and a maximum 0.25x magnification throughout the zoom range to suit working with close-up subjects. Additionally, the lens is weather-sealed to enable its use in trying weather conditions.

Standard wide-angle to portrait-length zoom lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-90mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture enables consistent performance throughout the zoom range and helps to achieve a sleek and lightweight physical design.
The lens construction integrates two aspherical elements, one DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element, two extra-low dispersion elements, one Super HR (high-refractive index) elements, and two HR elements into its design to minimize aberrations, distortion, and color fringing throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Minimum focusing distance of 4.7" at the wide end and 9.1" at the tele end pairs with an impressive 0.25x maximum magnification ratio to suit working with close-up subjects.
Dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.

OM SYSTEM OM-3 Reviews

Honestly, it’s a mixed bag.

The best part about the camera is the speed. The sensor is so fast for this sized sensor it just doesn’t have any issues at all with speed and that includes AF speed. The build quality is mostly excellent with some caveats. The problems with the camera on the other hand, seemed to outweigh those benefits. 1. The IBIS was much more limited with longer lenses like the 40-150 F2.8. 2. The only lenses, on the long end, with Sync IS support are as expensive or more expensive than their Full Frame counterparts parts. 3. The viewfinder is so average that an image will look extremely sharp, until you get home and find that it was nowhere near as sharp as it seemed. 4. For all the praise on the new menu system, they do janky things like linking drive mode to AF type. 5. The people proclaiming it is awesome as long as you don’t pixel peep, are telling you that you need to look at the images fully zoomed out to find them acceptable. 6. The little port doors often get caught on the screen rotating and that creates issues where the weather sealing might be compromised. Who would benefit from this camera? That’s tough, because you can do Macro work on lower cost bodies with this format and you could do microscope work on the OM-5 II as well, without the added expense. Those represent the largest advantage for this sensor format, with wild life a close second, if you can afford the lenses. If you’re on the fence here the OM-1 II solves some of these issues and the G9 MK II solves other issues. If you only want it for stuff you can do tethered that’s fine, but there are better options depending on your desired subject. My advice would be to pass on this in favor of one of the other bodies. Oh and the computational modes Aren’t a huge advantage as they still require you to know how to setup the camera depending on your effect and much of the macro work still requires a tripod, as does the water in motion effects. A Variable ND could do the same thing for you, on a larger sensor end body. Oh and one more note, a focus stack in the camera leaves you with 15 raw images you likely do not want in many scenarios.

More than just a "fun" camera

This a lot of fun to use with easy access to all its creative modes. However even for the serious Photographer it does the job. Takes beautiful images, has extremely fast and accurate auto focus and tracks wild life and birds very well. Upgraded from an Olympus EM-1 ii and I am extremely pleased with the sharpness and quality of the images.
