Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S Overview

Nikon's First 35mm f/1.2
A classic storytelling lens with superior build quality, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S Lens from Nikon is the first of its kind from the brand and promises to be a key player for event and documentary photography as well as for lifestyle shoots and environmental portraits. The addition of this prime lens completes a trio of NIKKOR f/1.2 offerings that are now comprised of 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm focal lengths. When used together, users benefit from a wide-to-telephoto range that's capable of isolating subjects and complementing them with a smooth, flattering bokeh. Additionally, with its impressive f/1.2 maximum aperture, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S shines when capturing in low-light environments.
Multi-Focusing System, Dual STM Motors
While a strong lens choice for still photography, this prime is also optimized for video capturing thanks to its clickless control ring, ability to suppress focus breathing, and quiet focusing operation.

Driving AF performance is a multi-focus system that incorporates dual STM motors for increased reliability and accuracy. When working near to subjects, this lens allows focusing as close as 11.8" away.

Convenient & Customizable
Adjusting settings quickly as your environment shifts is critical for nailing your shot. The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S features two L-Fn buttons that you can assign to your preferred lens functions. In addition to this is a manual focus ring and a programmable control ring that can be set to your desired function such as aperture adjustment or exposure compensation. This lens's 82mm filter thread is the same as the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S and NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S, providing added convenience when working with lens filters.
Weather Resistance & Glass Protection
Dust and drip resistance is ensured by multiple parts of the lens being sealed, including movable parts of the lens barrel. This provides users increased confidence when shooting on-location.

Meso Amorphous, Nano Crystal, and ARNEO coatings are utilized to minimize ghosting and lens flare for accurate and clear rendering despite difficult lighting conditions.

Complex Optical Design
Nikon uses three ED lenses and one aspherical ED lens for reducing spherical aberrations and distortion. In total, there are 17 elements in 15 groups as well as a rounded 11-blade diaphragm, which creates unique bokeh and striking image quality.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S Reviews

Since getting into the z mount system in 2020, I have been working my way to have a Trinity of 1.2 lenses. I got each one when they first released. 2 years ago I got the 85 1.2 and I love it. Since then I have been waiting for a 35 1.2 lense since it was announced. I was using an adapted 35 1.4 Tamron for years I wanted a native quality 1.2 to finally upgrade. Let me tell you. It was worth the wait. I am still new to using the lense, but my goodness is it amazing. You really see how great it is when you are backlit. The contrast does not become a compromise. The lense flare control is ridiculously good. The lense is super sharp wide open and very fast. It's a bit heavy though lol. But that's the price for quality. It is easily the best 35mm on the market. Surpassing the Sony and Canon 35 1.4 lenses

I own Nikon's 35-50-85mm 1.2s. What's different in 35 1.2s

I was used to the quality and low light capabilities of the 50 and 85 siblings of the 35 so what I was expecting became true: excellent performance in low light, no flash need in most cases, so I can capture photos without being noticed (well, may be somebody will keep staring at me because of the size of these monster lenses). The same goes to the rendering of the lens in terms of transition from in focus to out of focus areas, just beautiful images. Including the sun in the frame is not an issue, minimum flaring, minimum loss of contrast. Colors, well, I have Nikon lenses because I just like their color approach and their excellent weather sealing. There are another technicalities, but I only mention features that matters to me. One area though, again while comparing to their siblings, is the speed of focus. I normally use this lens in candid portraits that have some or a lot of context, so people can figure out not only the subject but also the environment where he resides. Now the problem is that those people are moving around, you blink an eye, and they are not there anymore. I'm not speaking of sports here, no bicycle in the air, just people walking around their sets. In my personal opinion the focus needs some improvement, and it is not that I do not understand the effort it takes to move that amount of glass or unawareness of the two motors used to do so, it is that the other two lenses do it just right for my needs and this one performs like the little brother, no pun intended. Would I buy it again? Simply, yes.

Will the HB-97 lens hood fit on this lens like it ...

Will the HB-97 lens hood fit on this lens like it does on the 50mm 1.2 S lens?
Asked by: Jeff
While it may fit, the Nikon HB-97 Lens Hood for Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S Lens is too short to correctly prevent unwanted light from entering the Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S Lens (Nikon Z).
