Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Overview

Versatile Reach, Prime-Like Performance
Combining the reach, speed, and optical quality of a super-telephoto prime with the versatility of a zoom, the Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens is a well-rounded workhorse built for photographing sports, wildlife, and other distant action subjects. Combining a constant f/4 maximum aperture with quick AF, robust image stabilization, and a durable design, this impressive lens can easily replace a series of telephoto primes without sacrificing on weight or speed.
Superior Reach and Optical Quality
Super-Telephoto Flexibility
Spanning a 300-600mm range with a constant f/4 maximum aperture, this zoom can effectively replace several super-telephoto primes without giving up speed. The maximum f/4 aperture keeps weight manageable while still offering a bright enough design for depth of field control and to suit shooting in available light conditions.

The lens also features an internal zoom and internal focus design, which maintains the overall length of the lens during operation and also reduces center of gravity fluctuations for stable and predictable handling when working on a monopod or tripod.
Professional-Grade Optics with Constant f/4 Aperture
A series of low dispersion and high refractive index glass elements ensures high clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy throughout the zoom and focusing ranges. Chromatic aberrations are well-controlled and a front Nano Porous Coating (NPC) reduces flaring and ghosting for high contrast.
Advanced Autofocus and Optical Stabilization
HLA-Driven AF
A combination of high-speed, nimble focusing performance and robust image stabilization makes this zoom ideal for tracking distant moving subjects.
  • A high-thrust HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) quickly moves the lightweight focusing group for quick focus switching and nimble tracking of fast-moving subjects.
  • A new function ring can be configured to control one of two settings, depending on how its settings switch is set: in Focus Preset Mode, turning the ring will instantly shift focus to a pre-registered position. In Power Focus Mode, turning the ring allows for constant speed focus pulling (useful during video shooting) and the focus speed can be changed in two steps.
  • Four separate AFL buttons make it easy to control focus position while tracking subjects.
  • Focus Mode and Focus Limiter switches give further control on focus speed and range for even more control depending on what the subject is and how far away it is.
Powerful OS and OS2 Algorithm
Helping to achieve sharp and stable images, this 300-600mm features a robust image stabilization system that compensates for 5.5 stops of camera shake at the 600mm position. Powered by Sigma's OS2 algorithm and using a dedicated drive unit, actuator, and high-precision sensor, this stabilization system is perfectly matched to the larger size and wider aperture design of this lens.
Additionally, for more refined control, two OS modes are available:
  • Mode 1 is a general application stabilization mode, suitable for most photo and video situations.
  • Mode 2 is a specialized setting for panning work and makes use of the OS2 algorithm to better stabilize shots while moving the lens horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, regardless of the camera's orientation.
Durable Design and Intuitive Handling
Rugged, Weather-Sealed Construction
Built for harsh environments, the lens features a highly durable design intended for use in trying conditions:
  • Magnesium alloy barrel for durability without excessive weight.
  • Dust- and splash-resistant seals for reliability in inclement weather conditions.
  • The front element features a water- and oil-repellant coating that is especially easy to clean.
  • Thermal insulation paint prevents overheating in extreme temperatures.
Intuitive Handling, Drop-In Filters, and Accessories
  • As a heavier and larger lens, this 300-600mm f/4 lens will often be used atop a tripod or monopod; it features a rotating tripod collar that incorporates detents at each 90° position. The removable tripod foot is also compatible with Arca-type clamps for direct attachment to a variety of heads.
  • Compatible with 40.5mm filters via an included drop-in filter holder. Optional variable ND and circular polarizer drop-in filters can be used instead, too.
  • A matching lens hood is included along with a custom backpack-style protective case, removable tripod socket, and the drop-in filter holder.

Will this work on RED Komodo-X? What adapters would be needed? Is there an electronic ND option? How good would be the autofocus
Asked by: Philipp
E-mount lenses like the Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens (Sony E) can be adapted to RED DIGITAL CINEMA KOMODO-X Z Mount 6K Digital Cinema Camera (BH #REKXZM) that has the Nikon Z mount, but not the RF mount versions of the Komodo. You would need to use a lens adapter like the Viltrox E-Z AF Lens Mount Adapter (Sony E to Nikon Z), BH #VIEZLMAR, which does enable autofocus but will not have ND filtering. Because of the nature of adapting E-mount to Z-mount, filtering via the adapter will not be possible,

Is this lens capped at 15 frames per second on Sony cameras such as the A9iii and A1?
Asked by: Dennis
On the Sony a9 III and A1, third-party lenses are limited to 15 fps, so this Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens (Sony E) will have a similar limitation. Faster 30 fps shooting is only possible with compatible first-party Sony lenses.

Is the lens also threaded so it could take aftermarket caps and filters, and if so, what is this “front filter size” in mms?
Asked by: Leslie
I don't know exactly what size in MMs the front element is, but Zemlin photo already makes an aftermarket squeeze front cap for around $100 for this lens.

With an adaptor will this work on a Nikon Z camera? What features are lost?
Asked by: Garrett
Regarding whether the Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens (Sony E) will work on a Nikon Z camera with an adapter, the usual drawbacks will be a slower autofocusing speed, but it is entirely dependent on the Sony E to Nikon Z adapter that you use.
